I love headlamps. I have acquired a ton of headlamps over the years, including by investing early on interesting designs on crowdfunding sites. I have headlamps for many different purposes and scenarios. Ultralight, ultrabright, ultraexpensive, ultracomplicated. Hiking, car safety kit, basement exploration, nighttime yardwork. I have never used a Ledlenser headlamp until now; where has this lamp been all my life? I am really appreciating the combination of svelte design, light weight, brightness, and simplicity. Especially simplicity. The MH5 is a light. It has a very bright (400 lumens!) setting, and a dimmer setting. It has an adjustable focal ring to quickly and easily switch from a broad to a narrow beam. It has a red light to help preserve nightvision. It has One. Single. Button. It is so, so simple to use, and there is no need for more settings or features. I think it's perfect. Also, it can use either a regular disposable AA battery, or the included rechargeable AA battery, which allows for a lot of flexibility when on the road or the trail. When you have a charging source, you use an included cable that has a magnetic connector, and very easily attaches to the bottom of the light. It's so simple and it works so well. Lastly, the light easily pops out of the housing, to be used handheld, or to attach to a pack or clothing with the included clip. I cannot think of a single other thing I'd need in a light. This lamp doesn't have too many features, or too few. It is just right. I found the Ledlenser comfortable to wear. It is light and well-balanced. The strap is thin yet sturdy, and comfortable against the skin. The clips are easy to use and hold the strap securely at the desired length. I recently took this headlamp out for a nighttime walk in the woods and from about 100 yards away picked up five sets of two pinpoint lights! As I got closer, the lights vanished, to be replaced by whitetails. Deer fleeing deeper into the woods. They stopped, turned around, and stared back at me. I stopped and gave the headlamp a good testing, seeing how the bright and dim light, the wide and narrow beam, picked up the deer in the woods, as well as trees, branches, the ground, etc. The bright setting with the broad beam provided a pretty remarkable view of the deer in the woods about 40 yards away from me. It gave me a great chance to see this Ledlenser perform and prove its usefulness and functionality. This headlamp is a winner all around. I will again stress that the features are just right - not too many or too few. And unlike some lights where you need a post-graduate degree to figure out how the buttons work, this one is simple and intuitive. I think any avid outdoorsperson will appreciate this piece of gear.
This headlamp is a pretty great headlamp. There are three different light settings, a low, a high and a red light. The bright setting is really nice and bright. I tried to get a good picture of what it looks like when the bright light is on but it doesn't do it justice. It is actually quite comfortable to wear all night long too. There is a nice foam ring that sits against your head that keeps it from hurting when wearing for long periods. You can see it in one of the pics. Another cool feature is that when you disconnect the body from the head band there is a clip that you can attach it to either your backpack, shirt pocket or whatever to use as a light. I haven't seen this feature on other headbands I have purchased in the past but is a very cool addition. There is a dial around the light that allows you to make the cone of your light either wide or narrow which could come in handy I suppose but not something that I use, at least at this point. One of the things that I don't like about this headlamp is that it has a proprietary cord which is why I gave it 4 stars. It would be nice to be able to use the same micro USB cord that I use for most of the other products that I own. Other than that I think this is a great light and it will be the one I grab on my next trip out.
This review was a tough one to complete as our location was dealing with sub zero temps that disrupted travel multiple times, but the good news is this light functioned well despite the cold. The product comes with the light, charging cable, and rechargeable battery. It is a nice feature to be able to recharge or use standard AA battery. The headlamp itself is simple to use with simple click to turn on with additional click for increased power. It also has a red light feature that is easy to switch to with a press and hold of the switch. I found the headband comfortable and easy to adjust and the lamp swivels to allow more precise focus of your light beam. The instructions are easy and packaging was ample. The lamp was tested in -24 degree windchills in the Black Hills of South Dakota and held up with no problems. The temps prevented me from doing longer testing to include time between charges. The only concerns I had were potential waterproofing issues and having a very specific cable for charging you can see in the pictures. If the cable is lost or damaged it would not be an easy replacement.
The Lenlenser headlamp is the best outdoor headlamp I've ever used. It is so bright, with the largest viewing area I've ever used. The red light function is also awesome, super useful when you don't want to wake anyone at night (during camping). Compared to my previous Black Diamond headlamp, this one is so much better. Its definitely become an indispensable tool for all my camping and climbing trips!
First of all, it’s very challenging to accurately show this item in action since its best use is in the dark! I’ve done my best to show the size and fit. It’s reasonably bright and has all the features I look for in a headlamp: multiple brightness settings, red mode, rechargeable, adjustable up or down. The beam can be focused to be wide or narrow which is nice too. The light itself feels solid, but the strap is just okay. I was worried I would break the plastic casing the first time I tried to take the strap off, and you need to do so in order to change the batteries, which I feel is a design flaw. I’m not sure I personally need the strap to be removable and don’t see many situations where I would take it off otherwise. The light itself feels pretty small to me without the strap and I’d personally worry about losing it, but it is definitely portable. The strap is relatively comfortable but there is no grip on the inside so I find it can slip somewhat. I haven’t reached the limit of the batteries yet and I’ve taken it on a few walks, so time will tell whether they compare to my previous headlamp in terms of longevity. I will say that the lower brightness setting is not very bright, so I will probably use this on the higher setting if walking, which will significantly reduce battery life. Overall, I think this product is okay. I received it in exchange for my honest review. I don’t have any major complaints, but it probably will not replace my go to headlamp. I like that it’s rechargeable, but there are brighter and smaller options out there at a similar price point if those are your priorities.
Great product! It feels durable & light on the head & the head strap & beam focus are easily adjustable. It comes with a standard rechargeable battery & you can put in another rechargeable or standard AA battery. The battery compartment has a spring that pops the lid off when you unlock it by pushing against the battery. Before a battery is installed, it is hard to open. This might loosen up some after use, but I intend to leave it open when I don't have a battery stalled.
Things I like: - rechargeable! (There is the option to add AA batteries if charging is not an option) - can change the beam from wide to narrow - can take the light out of the strap and there is a clip to slide on the strap of a backpack or pocket - bright Things that could be better: - longer battery life. After 2 nights of camping, it was flickering and showing low battery. - putting the light back in the strap after using as a flashlight is a challenge and feels like I’m going to break the plastic bracket. Make sure you carefully align the clip in the back with the space for it (which is hard to do in the dark) - instruction manual is pretty minimal, but it’s fairly self explanatory. Overall- I give it 4 stars and would give it 4.5 if I could. I think it’s a good introductory headlamp and will work well for the majority of campers but maybe not for the longer backpacking trips.
Before I ever was able to turn the light on the battery case fastener cracked. I called Ledlenser and the rep said he’d never heard of this happening before. Funny, at least 2 other reviews site the exact same flaw. Rep advised to return light to REI but since I bought the light on SALE for $20 I wanted to try some 2-step plastic glue from Home Depot. Figured if that doesn’t work I can always return it.
The light is sufficiently bright. It is described as a rechargeable light however I would not describe it as such. It comes with a rechargeable battery and a battery charger. To recharge, the battery must be removed, and before accessing the battery compartment the strap must be removed. That’s more work than I want to do. I bought a different one whose battery is charged in place.
I’m happy with this light, plenty bright for hiking, or just walking. If your on a long trip you can carry extra AA battery’s or another recharge one. A little hard to open, when it arrives with out a battery installed, just don’t give up, it’s a breeze with the battery in it.
