Great, Well-Built, Light Duffle
Travelled with this duffle on a couple of recent airline flights. I carried clothing, shoes and a set of tools in the duffle. I was able to use a small lock to lock the zippers for the main compartment to one of the loops that would otherwise have been used for the shoulder strap. If you pack it well with the heavier items at one end it is feasible to stand the bag upright. The duffle did not show any signs of wear other than some dirt marks from the airlines. It did rain at one destination of my travels and I could tell the bag encountered some rain (amount of rain unknown), but it remained dry inside. By attaching the shoulder strap diagonally across the bag it carried very well and when I went to check the bag in I just adjusted the shoulder strap to its shortest length and put it under the carrying handles before I connected the handles with the velcro handle wrap. No problem with the airlines in this configuration. I like the golden color as it was easy to see on the baggage carousel when I went to retrieve it at the end of each flight. I liked the bag it came folded up in, as I used that to keep all the small personal items in one bag within the duffel. At the end of the trip, the duffle was easy to fold (in thirds) to fit back in to the small bag and then store. It is not a wheeled duffle, but it is well built, held 30+ pounds of clothing and tools and took the abuse of luggage handlers from a few flights. I believe this might be a good bag to place within other luggage if you know you are likely to pick up a number of souvenirs or items and your luggage may not fit them. I can also see it as a means to pack my 50 liter backpack when I will fly to a location for a hiking trip as it will easily pack down and can stow in my backpack without too much space or weight. The duffle is stated as 60 liters, but it seems to hold much more than that stated volume.
Great for road trip or car camping!
This bag is nice and simple and seems to be of high quality. While I like the simplicity, I highly prefer to have a secure inner pocket. The zippered outer pocket is a nice size, but a zippered inside pocket is something I cherish in my pricier duffels. I love the colors. I absolutely hated the shoulder strap connection at first. I had to look at pictures of the bag to even figure out how to use it. Then, it was very difficult to get the hooks through the eyelets. I found after time the eyelets have broken in and the simplicity of the design has grown on me. I used this bag for a 3 day concert where we car camped. It was perfect to toss in clothes, shoes, water bottles, and could have fit plenty more. I was happy to find my house key in the side pocket when I got home, but a key loop was greatly missed for ease of mind. I always love the duffel bag storage bags because they make perfect packing cubes. This one is perfect for socks and undies. Overall, I feel this is a great value for a nice large duffel.
Not what they were…
I love the previous version of these duffel bags. This is a lower quality material by far. It may last, but the older versions will outlast this one. I’d rather REI raised the price and maintained the previous materials and quality. Wish I had picked up the 60 a few years ago. Counting on REI standing behind this product in the event it fails.
Great durable duffel
This is a no frills dependable duffel that can fit a lot of stuff! The size makes it ideal for weeklong trips - however, its size means it's also easy to fill and then that makes it hard to carry. Would definitely recommend it for car camping or hotel trips where you're not lugging it around much. Appreciate the ability to store the duffel in a small rectangle size so you could throw it in another bag as an extra, just-in-case storage option!
Fantastic spillover / backup bag
I bought this bag as an impulse buy as a father's gift for myself nearly a year ago. Since then, this bag has gone on every trip we've taken (to visit family, travel, etc.) and it's been used every time. It's used while family camping to hold some sleeping gear. It's used while visiting family as a spill-over bag for stuffed animals. We used it while flying on vacation as a spare checked bag on the way home when we needed more space due to souvenirs (and this bag made it through airlines bag handlers without issue). If you use this bag weekly it would probably show wear after a while, but mine (after maybe 5-6 trips) still looks new. Quite possibly one of my best impulse buys in a long time. I'll probably buy another one or two.
Great on safari!
My husband and I bought matching bags for our two-week safari trip in East Africa, and we thought the bag was perfect! It made it through 7 flights and multiple times being thrown into jeeps and trucks. We were impressed at how well it guarded our items from the sand/dirt, and it packs a lot of stuff in it for it’s size. Like others have said, there aren’t any special features, but the material is handy and super durable, the outside pocket is helpful, and the rectangular case it comes in is helpful as a toiletry bag too. It’s also very lightweight, so it was perfect for the small planes with tight baggage limits. Only issue is that we didn’t understand how to use the shoulder strap so we went without it. We also want to note that because it’s just one big bag, we thought that packing cubes were really helpful here. Overall, we thought it was perfect!
OK for dirty laundry
Durability is a problem. At this weight and price I wouldn't have attempted to load it past 30 lbs or so, or use it to carry dense and possibly sharp contents such as climbing gear, but cycling gear is relatively tame, so I figured it ought to work for that. Wrong. First trip I made with it, upon collection from airport baggage claim, two large holes had appeared in the bottom. Nothing sharp inside, but there were some hard items - road cycling shoes, helmet (though padded with clothing), small track pump, along with kit and other clothing - total weight, about 25 lbs. The 60 is too large to carry on US domestic airlines (at least if full and gate agents aren't looking the other way), so don't count on giving it the kid glove treatment yourself. While it might survive baggage handling with only soft contents, it certainly isn't suitable as a gear bag to be checked with airlines. May be suitable for other applications, or if you have the patience to wrap every hard item securely in soft padding, but I'll be returning it.
Not Durable
Used it as a checked bag on a flight and the bottom ripped the first use. I understand luggage handlers can oftentimes not care about the bags, but the product should be more durable. Will return which is a shame because the bag is perfect if you don’t need to check it for a flight.
Shoulder strap attachment.explained
I've had my 60L Roadtripper for over a year now, and until today could not figure out how to attach the shoulder strap. The shoulder strap has a black eared tab on each end. Put the tab through one of the gray loops on one end, and the other tab through the gray loop on the opposite side on the other end. That way the shoulder strap crosses the center of the duffel and hangs correctly. After learning this I love my RoadTripper even more!
I wish they had the proper strap....
I have two of these in 40 and one in 60. They are great bags for the money. They shape has a longer aspect ratio than the previous generation (which i still have and use). The biggest design flaw on these bags is the plastic Tee clip used to secure the strap to the loop. In my opinion, that design is bad. Someone needs to explain it to me. I've ordered proper straps from Amazon to replace them. Maybe the next generation will be improved. On the material, great balance between backpacker thin and army duffel thick. Zipper quality good.
