Looks great, but painful to wear

Several years ago, I purchased a Teva hiking shoe. It was the most comfortable shoe I ever wore, but, after years of hiking, it was wearing out. So I purchased this shoe, hoping for the same performance. Unfortunately, there was a design change in the lacing system. The result is these shoes are uncomfortable to the point of being painful, due to pressure from the top laces on my insteps. I really like the look and construction of these shoes but I can't wear them comfortably and am returning them.

Poor lace design

I thought these would be perfect for my needs, but as another reviewer noted, the lace/eyelet design puts a lot of pressure on the top of the foot to the point of being unwearable. Will be returning

Uncomfortably well made athletic shoe

Material used supports the feet for active wear, but not comfortable. You feel some snag on the upper area along side of the shoe lace.

Incredibly uncomfortable

Lacing system puts painful pressure on your feet the moment you put them on. Couldn't imagine having to wear them all day. Also they are quite heavy/clunky/had a very thick sole and I felt I would be tripping over myself wearing them. Returned immediately.

The best on my feet

I have bought these for many years both in the low profile and mid-height styles. I’m sure I have had at least 10 pairs. Tevas fit my feet so well. I can hike with them straight out of the box with no break-in. The Vibram soles provide a stable platform and good grip. I have seen a number of reviews that cite these hikers as uncomfortable. To that I say, different people have different feet. I have tried other brands. Keens and especially Oboz have made my feet suffer but I wouldn’t say they are terrible. I have friends who use them successfully. They just don’t work with my feet.

Constantly loosening laces

Not as commas previous versions of this shoe. The biggest problem is the laces. They will not stay tied. They are constantly loosening and becoming undone. It really makes a nice shoe annoying.

Not a great walking show

This shoe was good looking and comfortable on my feet. However, on walks of any length, my legs and hips became very fatigued, unlike with other shoes I use for walking/hiking. It seemed that the sole did not have good "rebound," and was instead a bit like walking on sand; it just wore me out. I returned the shoes.

Poor replacement for previous Rivas

I tried these to replace an old pair of Riva eVents. They looked and felt clunky compared to the old ones, and the stability features in the sole felt very awkward. I didn't have time to judge the lacing pressure others have complained about because I returned them immediately.

Good everyday shoes, a little break-in is required

I'd guess most people buy these shoes as everyday shoes and not so much as hiking shoes. I'd also guess that most people these days expect everyday shoes to be comfortable right out of the box. I have a two-year-old pair of these that are very comfortable and decided to buy a new pair. Out of the box, I was surprised to find that they were not that comfortable. I noted some of the issues where the tongue attaches that other reviewers have noted. I compared them to my old shoes to see if anything had changed and they looked the same. I decided to wear them around the house for a few days, starting with thick socks and moving progressively to lighter ones. I even rubbed a little coconut oil on one bumpy place that was bothering me. Within about three days, these shoes felt just as comfortable as my old ones. Bottom line: I think these are great shoes but be prepared to give them a little break-in time. Buying them from REI, which has a generous return policy, is probably a good idea in case trying to break them in doesn't work for you.

Painful to wear

As noted in other reviews, the shoes bind at the top of the tongue where the laces are tied. I have tried a looser knot (which easily becomes untied) and skipping the top eyelets to tie them lower, but it doesn't help. They are just poorly designed and perhaps not product tested enough. They look great but feel terrible. As Steve Martin would say, they are Cruel Shoes.
