Good is good enough

It is claimed to have a 'no-fuss style' and 'quick drying breathability'. The style bit is accurate: if you are fussy about style, this is not your shirt. I put the breathability to the test. The NRS shirt was alternately worn, by me and my spouse, versus a very average poly short sleeve shirt of the same size (that I happened to be wearing) over the course of some activities that would warm us up and give us a sense of breathability, which I take as a near-synonym for 'cooling'. The NRS gave indistinguishable results from my $6 Goodwill poly shirt. When I saturated each garment to determine its quick-dry ability, the NRS performed about as unimpressively as the $6 Goodwill shirt–wet polyester doesn't dry quickly. What this suggests to me is NOT that my cheapie shirt was a lucky find, but that NRS did not attempt to make this a special garment. It has to be concluded that the fabric in the NRS shirt is not a high-performance textile, but something rather average. The biggest question I have about the shirt is whether the tight weave is a UV-resistance thing or some other ($-saving) function. Tight weave polyester, or any synthetic fabric, is seldom a top choice for comfort in activewear in a warm weather garment. I had hoped that at the price, NRS would have incorporated a high-performing fabric into the shirt that would have made me stop and think 'Oh, this garment does do something special'. Remember the first time you wore a Gore-Tex parka for some cold weather activity, and you thought to yourself 'hey, this stuff really works'? That was roughly analogous to what I was hoping for but in the end the shirt only came up as 'good'. That isn't bad, and I like the shirt, but don't get yourself hoping for a standout high-performance garment.
