Best Gear Purchase of 2021!
I built a platform for the back of my minivan this summer so that the kids and I could go on quick trips with the option of not taking a tent. In the summer, we mostly used the tent but come fall we have been using the van because of the weather and ease of setup. The problem was getting out of the car without getting wet. The Kelty Sideroads Car Awning solved all of our problems and made rainy camping so much fun. It was easy to set up, though awkward in rain as you can't set it up without the 'dry' section getting wet. The stakes are very beefy, recommend a mallet to get it into the ground, it also has guy lines for windy conditions. Securing the awning onto the car was incredibly simple and quick. I clipped on side onto the side rail and the other onto the tire rim. I was worried about the webbing rubbing on the car but did not see any damage to the paint. There is also enough overlap on the top that the rain has no chance of leaking in. I put it on the sliding door side of the van and now we can get out of the van into our 'living room' in the morning. The webbing was also not an issue here when the door was opening or closing. I set up a table and two chairs inside. There was plenty of room. I do wish the color was a little lighter for fall camping, but understand that I will appreciate it in the summer as a sun shade. Easy to take down and the gear sack is also oversized which makes putting it away very simple. I liked it so much that I gifted one to a friend immediately and will be purchasing another as for a Xmas present.
Works great with Small Camper Galley
It is certainly well designed and we made. It was easy to set up and worked wonderfully for our small camper galley.
Worth Its Weight in Gold.
Purchased this product and headed on a multi day camping trip in the high country of WV. Super simple set up and very functional. The 3rd day of my trip a cold front rolled in and we were hit with intervals of heavy down pours mixed with steady rain for more than 24 hours. The Kelty Sideroads Awning did a superb job of keeping us dry and offering a comfortable place to wait out the bad weather. Never once did we get wet or worry about being sheltered.
Fairly Affordable; Easy to Use Canopy
Our Dometic Awning was faulty when we purchased our van. We removed it and attached an aluminum rail on the old awning mounts to span the side of the van to attach a canopy with tie downs. After considering a few options, REai had this in stock locally and on sale for 25% off so we picked one up to try out and ended up loving it. We wish it was just a little bigger but it fully covers our two door side entry and sets up pretty easily. It stayed put in some wind at the foothills of the mountains in Northern New Mexico for our trip. This was supposed to be more of a temporary solution while we waited for another company to release a larger version of their much more expensive canopy but after using this one, the other can wait indefinitely as we’ll keep this for as long as it lasts. Packs up small and light and has nice little pocket storage built in for guy lines and straps included. Would definitely recommend, especially if found on sale.
Almost perfect
I’m planning to do some SUV camping this summer and have been investigating shelter options. I experimented with a tarp and poles but it didn’t provide enough cover. I’ve used Kelty backpacks in the past and was happy to see this product at REI. It was very easy to set up on my 4Runner and seemed very spacious underneath. The one improvement I’d suggest is grommets on the corners that attach to the vehicle. That would make it easier to drop it and stake it to the ground if you moved the vehicle, instead of having to disassemble the whole thing. The carry bag is spacious and easy to stuff. ALL tent bags should be made like this!
A real winner
This is precisely the awning I wanted. It is easy for one person to assemble. It is thoughtfully designed and well-built. I use it attached the side of my Chevy Traverse, one end tied into the rack; the other end strapped around the far side-view mirror. I can open the rear passenger side door, opposite the side I sleep on, and get in and out with no rain coming in. I also have the Kelty Carport. It is bigger, but is a terrible task for one person to assemble (the final pole insertion effort can cause the canopy to bow inside out and the straps were just not made long enough to make it easy). It is off to a good home. The Sideroads awning is a winner.
Excellent for camping out of your car!
I have been camping with this awning 2-3 nights a week for 8 weeks now and it is awesome! Pros: Easy to set up, spacious enough to keep two people out of moderate rain, many easy anchors, packs fairly small. Cons: Sometime I wish there was more privacy, in high winds I had to add an additional stake through the green fabric halfway between built in stake holders, Lack of indoor organization like a wall pouch or more hook spots. I DIY'd mine so that I can hang string lights inside and love it!
Awesome for shade
I put this awning up partially in my living room and then fully on my Toyota truck with canopy. I was in Death Valley and despite wind gusts I was able to put it up by myself. Plenty of room for two chairs etc. It withstood moderate wind with higher gusts without any issue. The stakes are beefy. A lot of thought went into putting this product together down to the little built in pouches for the straps. The only weakness is when the points of the canopy hatch contact the awning material. I tried socks but due to the wind they came out. I am going to make a cover that has softened corners for my hatch and that will solve that problem. It was a big hit at my campground.
thin fabric, holes
Easy set up but instructions for strapping to wheels could be better. This will not strap to your Subaru Outback top rails due to lack of holes at either end of the rails. It will hook to the Forester. There were 3 pin-head sized holes in the thin fabric, and I suspect more will come when pinecones or other sharp leaves drop on the awning. I would return for replacement but needed the awning for trip in next few days. Used some silicone caulking to fill the holes. Interesting that this item is not found on the Kelty website -- perhaps discontinued?? Too bad, as this is perfect for car camping and getting in and out in wet weather.
Great shelter
I carried this awning on three trips so far, and used it twice because of inclement weather. So nice to be able to wait out the storms under the awning versus sitting in a stuffy car. Easy and quick set up. I set it up once off the back of my car, once off the side. Could easily fit two regular size camp chairs and a table and still stay dry.
