Metal wire broke totaled my Trek and Cannondale
I purchased this rack in April. I had it on and off my car 3 times before my 4th trip where the metal wire/arm from the rack going to the top of my car snapped on the highway. This sent my two bikes toppling onto the highway attached to the rack at $55 mph. Luckily, no one was injured. However this caused $2500 in damage to my two road bikes (totaled them), broke part of my car, and made the rack unless. Neither Thule or REI will pay for the damages. So avoid this rack at all costs. Does not work on cars it claims to be approved for and neither Thule or REI will compensate for damages.
DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT
This bike rack broke the back window on my Volvo V90. I followed the instructions precisely, tightening the cable until I heard two clicks. (I even stopped and went back and read the instructions because it seemed like it was getting really tight and putting a lot of pressure on the glass.) Right after the second click, the glass went POP and cracked around the rubber foot. Thule and Volvo supposedly have a tight partnership, so I was very surprised that following the exact instructions led to damage to my car. Do not buy this product. It is defective and will damage your vehicle.
simply the best better than all the rest
I bought this for my F30 BMW 3 series sedan to carry my bike and my kids' two 20" bikes. It was easy to put on the car, easy to put and secure the bikes, and best of all no extra straps to deal with. I drove up and down Oregon mountains going 70mph and the bikes were so secure you'd forget there were there.
Rock solid construction
This bike rack is amazingly solid in its construction. Once assembled, it's easy to get on and off the car. The tension knobs secure it into place so that it doesn't move. The key locks on the tension knobs keep prevent theft. The fold-down arms are essential. Make sure that when you're not transporting any bikes to keep the straps inserted into their ratchets, otherwise the protective rubber pads could slip off.
Light, Strong, and easy to install
Used to have raceway pro 3 bike rack, and once saw this newly designed bike rack how easy it can be installed, lock bikes, transport. Then bought it, used for fatbike, road bike, and simply just love it, it is such a ease to install on car, load bikes, securely lock bikes. Love it very much.
Apparently not compatible with auto-tailgate
So far this seems like a pretty sturdy and pretty well designed back rack (although the tire rim protector pads will be immediately lost if you forget to close the straps after removing a bike) BUT, although the Thule website says this rack fits a ‘22 Subaru Forester, nowhere does it say that the empty rack is not compatible with a Subaru automatic tailgate- the tailgate apparently senses the rack’s weight and the tailgate closes automatically and there doesn’t seem to be a way to keep the tailgate open other than holding it up. And the tailgate-mounted top strap clips don’t completely clear the body of the vehicle when the tailgate opens, so immediately begin to scuff and eventually I suppose bare metal will be exposed and the clips subject to rust(?) I would have considered a tow hitch-mounted rack if it had been clear ahead of time that this rack makes hands free access to the rear cargo area impossible. Calling Thule and Subaru about this didn’t produce conclusive results either, frustratingly.
Thank you for sharing your feedback on the Thule Outway bike rack. Thule does not recommend operating an automatic tailgate with any bike racks attached to the vehicle. This is listed in a document in the Instructions section of the Thule.com product page, and is included with the bike rack. Sudden and unstoppable movement of the rear door could cause damage. Please contact the vehicle manufacturer for information on how to disable this feature as needed.
Damaged Bikes
I liked everything about this rack except it’s impossible to fit 3 bikes and 2 was a mess too. I loaded two bikes on side by side and they got damaged on a road trip. The handlebars rubbed and the metal is now scraped up. Frustrating because the bikes were brand new.
rubber Strip not good
I bought this rack model used in one of the sales apps, the seller said, he bought it recently, however the 2nd time I used it, my bike fell out due to a strip rubber rip out having my bike totally destroy. The rack has pretty good features though.

Snug Fit, Easy Install
I got this for my 2022 Sonata. Among all the trunk-mount bike racks I've seen, this was the most expensive, but that's because it's the only bike rack I've seen that attaches with only 2 cables and is lockable. This is my first trunk-mount, so I have nothing to compare to, but this was a very easy installation. I can't imagine having 6 straps to deal with; I can figure it out, but it would probably annoy me and wouldn't look very nice (if that's what you care about). The hooks that attach to the trunk are gentle to the paint. Once installed properly, there's no play. Of course, make sure it's a confirmed fit for your car. When I tried to make it budge, it shook the car. The quick-release bike mounting bars are very secure when tightened. I have a mountain bike that would otherwise stick its back tire out to the left or right of the car if not for the ability to position the mounting bars off-center. It's very lightweight compared to a hitch and hitch-mount rack, so your rear suspension will thank you. Overall, definitely worth what I paid.
Awesome. Will make you rethink needing a hitch.
This thing is awesome. Looks great. Fits perfectly. Very secure. I wanted a hitch bike rack until I realized how not-straightforward it is to install a hitch. I assumed a car rack would de facto feel inferior but that’s not the case here.
