This bike looks well built. I examined the welds, and how everything was aligned when constructed. I also like how the bike is so tough. My kids will not be able to break it. Details like the handle bar grips, the seat, and tires are also high quality accents, and not the cheapest REI could find. The orange color is awesome. It even comes with a page of cool stickers, so your kids can personalize their bike. My son hopped on and started riding--transitioning up from a balance bike.
We purchased this bike online for our 3 year-old granddaughter, and we were very pleasantly surprised! First, we opted to have it shipped to an REI store for (free!) assembly, to make sure it was built properly. They had it ready in a day, and we picked it up with our granddaughter in order for her to be properly fitted. She's a petite 3 year-old, and the seat was placed at the lowest level. She tried it out in the store, and they made a couple of other tweaks. I remember riding a bike with training wheels and feeling like I was going to tip over. This bike is very stable, and she wasn't scared at all with tipping over. It's a very solid, well-made bike, with room to grow. We (and our granddaughter) are very happy with it!
I wanted to love this bike, i really did. It is study and the correct size for my kiddo, and we love REI bikes. But this one is a dud. We had it for about a month, with normal bike riding for a toddler, a couple times a week for about 30 minutes to an hour, nothing intensive. The training wheels started falling off...so i would screw them back on, but then ten minutes later, they'd fall right back off. Which, when a two year old is riding, and training wheels fall off, it is a pretty scary situation for them and it always resulted in my toddler falling and hurting his elbows, bracing himself. So we took it into REI and got charged 48 bucks to "correct" the issue. Low and behold, the first time he rides it after getting it "repaired", the training wheel falls off again after 10 minutes. He was in the middle of the road crossing in between sidewalks and he just bit it. I wouldn't recommend this bike to anyone.
Terrible training wheels. They're not secured by a nut, but tensioned into the bike itself so eventually they'll strip out and your child will fall after normal riding. When you bring it back in for the normal 1 year warrantee they'll call it user error because there was a sticker that says "tighten every time before use" and then charge you an obscene amount of money to fix what's obviously a design flaw Until they fix the problem, don't get this bike The bike is also very heavy, i would go with the woom if i could do it again.
Bought this bike for my son for his birthday and had to pay the extra $30 for shipping. I received the bike and put the rest of it together it looks nice but when it comes to function it is lacking a lot. The pedals seems very stiff to function and seem to catch when making a rotation which is something that will not work for a little kid. Also when pedaling it has a lot of noise coming from the back wheel. When turning the bike upside down and just try to free spin the wheel it does not spin freely for long and quickly comes to a stop for both the front and rear wheel. Lastly when I turned the bike upside down and rotate the rear wheel it is bent. Maybe it’s just a bad batch but disappointed is an understatement REI usually has extremely high quality gear but this one’s a miss.
I bought this bike for my 3yo. He went from his balance bike to this pretty easy. However, this bike is just too heavy and the foot brake is a huge downside. I wish it had a hand break. Kids this age just have a hard time with that coordination while using their hands to steer. It is sturdy, but the paint chips very easily.
Bike is well made but is extremely heavy! I couldn’t find its weight in the product description, but because the frame is aluminum I assumed that it would be relatively light. Unfortunately no, it is extremely heavy! It is so heavy that my son cannot ride it up even little hills.
The training wheels screw into the frame ok the body. I took this off twice and know it is stripped. Horrible design for the training wheels would not recommend.
My son used his balanced bike from age 2 to 3. He got the hang of this bike in 3min without the training wheels at 3!
Good little bike. Well made, good weight, nice color and it feels durable, which is a bonus. To the “Go Cougs” reviewer. From the photo you posted, it looks like you need to raise the seat post. That will provide proper leg extension for your youngster, help him peddle easier and prevent injury. Happy riding.
