Great tire, but...
After doing a lot of online research and reviews, I decided to try out the 700c x 40 Continental Terra Trails. After one ride I can say these tires are pretty awesome. They seem to roll pretty good on asphalt and hard packed dirt, and gripped going across an off-camber grass hill, and didn't slip in the gravel. I don't have a whole lot of experience with gravel tires, but I can say these feel great and I'm a lot more confident on these over the stock skinnies. Now my only little gripe is that the tire pictured doesn't match what I was sent. This is purely aesthetic and has nothing to do with the performance of the tire. I like the look of the "Continental" and "TRAIL" printed in yellow, but the tires I received were printed in all silver, giving it a cheaper look IMO. Initially I thought I was sent old stock, but don't know for sure. Maybe Conti changed the look and this is new stock. Don't know. If you're going to ship either version out, then you should put a picture of both options or say that in the description. Anyway, it's a great tire that you can feel confident riding over any terrain.
Fast, Light and Sturdy
Tires are as fast as similarly sized road tires but impressively tough in terms of scuffs and cuts while staying very supple and smooth on rougher surfaces. Seriously fast rolling speed but still stays hooked up in an impressively wide range of conditions. Very pleased with these tires, especially after having spent a few months with wider and slicker 37s.
Continental tough?? Not
I have about 1300 miles on a set of these. I usually ride between 33-45 tires with high center for maximum rolling. These tires are rounded making turns feel wishy washy. The sidewalls are not inspiring in turns. Lastly, really surprised at how many small holes there are in the sidewalls and tread. Oddly, even running tubeless, confirming there’s plenty of sealant, the pinholes do not clog. I’d say at 1300 miles, these tires have about run their course. Was hoping better from Continental!
Instant Tubeless & Great Value
Set up tubeless out of the box with a floor pump, dropped no air afterward and they ride loose and hilly gravel nicely. Decently compliant. We’ll see how they wear!
After 500+ Miles
I did a review after the first ride, something I rarely do. But, after a year wearing out one of the worst bike tires I've ever owned--and that's 35 years of riding mountain, road, and now gravel--the first ride was a revelation: quiet and smooth, and pretty quick, on pavement, with complete stability and grip when I shot from pavement at an angle to a dirt path. That same move would have slammed me to the ground with the previous tire, but with this one it was almost as if I'd gone from one paved surface to another. I've now ridden on big, sharp rocks (not far, that's what my mountain bike is for), on deep gravel, more dirt, a little mud, and more pavement. That first revelation continues. I love the tire. Interesting to me how as little as 1-2 psi is a huge difference in ride and handling. I run about 80psi on my 700X25 tubed road tires, but on these 700X40 tires 30psi is almost like 85-90 on those road tires, but 28psi is super smooth. I've started down a rocky, rutted road at 30psi, stopped due to my arms jackhammering on the terrain, let about 2psi out of each tire and finished the ride in...well, not pillowy comfort, but still management handling and far higher comfort. Tubeless really does allow some low pressures. Wonderful tires. My last Conti mountain bike tubeless tires developed a wobble that wasn't sealant collected on one side, but, rather, the beads wouldn't fully seat into the TCS rims, tubeless or tubed. I'm looking to see if that happens here after some miles or riding or if I wear them out before they wear me out. Until then, these are really great, all around tires.
Easy setup and good grip
Very easy to setup tubeless and they've held air pretty well. They're a bit slow on the road but excellent on trails. Definitely better grip than Gravelkings.
Great value "dual sport" tires
If I had to design a do-it-all commuting/gravel tire, it'd probably look like this. Fast rolling center that still has grip, knobby sides for cornering in dirt, puncture protection, and a lower price than other flashier tires. I commute on road, in rain, and sometimes take a route through some trails, and never once have I worried about needing different tires. I even did a cylcocross event with these (40mm in front, 35mm in back). They remind me of a modern gravel version of old-school MTB tires - just set, forget, and ride the bike until the wheels fall off. I have sets on two different bikes and will admit they were difficult enough to put on that I had to break out the youtube tricks. Had a bad wobble in one tire but it amounted to not seating the bead properly (not enough "pops" during inflation). But I'm sure if you are buying from REI or a LBS, they'll install them for you. Can't speak for the tubeless quality yet as I've only run tubes in them so far.
Versatile tire, Road & Gravel
Happy with the purchase of the Continental Tera Trail tires. Good for pavement and gravel riding. Would buy them again.
Looses air through sidewalls
The traction, tread wear, and ride quality are all pretty good after a few hundred miles, but the sidewalls leak a ton of air. It has been doing it since new and I have added stan’s sealant a few times trying to stop the leaking but it continues. It loses all of the air overnight and loses about five psi during a typical ride (35psi down to 30psi). The airleaks have been confirmed with soapy water. It is definitely oozing out of the sidewalls.
tire bead diameter tight, impossible to install
i found these tires to be impossible to install. this tire`s bead diameter is small compared to my kendo tires. i could get the tire over the wheel rim. i had to reinstall the old kendos, had no problem
