Pretty great… until it rains
I did not know before hand that the cleats were made of regular cheap steel, they were working great until I took them out in the rain ONCE let them sit for about 2 days and then went on a ride with my wife and my cleats were sticking pretty bad which ended in me falling over, I wasnt too happy… I got home and checked what the deal was and they were super rusty. I took the cleats apart, gave them a good clean and applied a thin layer of gun lubricant and they’re working better than new! BUT! Please check these things every time you go out, especially if you live somewhere wet! I still like them and still recommend them, although I implore Wahoo to make these things stainless!
SPEEDPLAYcomp pedals
Excellent products. Easy to clips in and out. After a few rides I decided to purchase two pairs of powrlink zero dual and speedplay zero for my others bikes. Highly recommended.
Solid pedals, nice price
Just got these after riding the stainless X2 for 15+ years. I like the redesign, especially the metal on the underside of the pedal clip which should help avoid the "play" my X2s would develop. New cleat design is nice too, I won't need my coffee shop covers any more. The tools needed for tightening the pedal to the crank (Allen 8) and adjusting the cleat float (tiny Phillips) are a little unusual, but no problems. I feared the light action would be too light, but that's not the case, and if anything unclipping requires a tad more ankle action than my old X2. It's a solid connection with no worries about unclipping unintentionally.
I have four bikes with
I have four bikes with speed play zero and 1 with aero. Decided to change old speedplay zero chrome with these wahoo comp. The stack height is higher it seems. I weighed them also slightly heavier than old ones. Also the worst part the is the engagement. It doesn’t engage as well as other zero pedals. I am using the new black and old yellow zero cleats on a few shoes though. Have not used the provided grey ones as my shoes are already setup. They say it all will work but just my experience. Overall it will suit its purpose, as I did not want to step up to the more expensive zero pedals this time. I find the Aeros to be the best.
Cleats using a new design.
One very worrying feature, which I have not seen it mentioned, so maybe a non-issue? As another reviewer noted, there is no longer a nut on the cleat, but an 8mm Allen from the inside to tighten/loosen the cleat. What this means is that half ( I checked) the thread is hollow. Somehow, this does not strike me as sound engineering. Applying all that force on the cleat and relying on a thread that is not completely solid ??? Time will tell, but if I’m correct , someone is in for a rude awakening.
I have been using Speedplay
I have been using Speedplay for several years now and I love them. The upgraded Wahoo Speedplay is a welcome improvement over the older version of Speedplay. First, they do not have to be maintained. I didn’t have a problem with that except I lost one of the grease port screws somehow. When I started to look at the new version of Wahoo Speedplay, I noticed that they changed the design and went with steel on the wearing edges of the peddle. When I looked at my old Speedplay I did notice some ware on the edges. Problem solved. I opted to replace my legacy Speedplay with the new Wahoo Speedplay peddles and never looked back.
Great Pedals
I love these pedals. They are a great option for roadies that want the ease of dual entry without resorting to mountain bike setups. The engagement is light and release is almost too easy. If you like a more locked in feel I would consider picking up the standard tension cleats as an option. Cleat setup is a little challenging. There are online guides to help, but it is still a little bit of trial and error to find your perfect position. My setup was a little bit more challenging because my shoes lacked good alignment markings on the bottom. All in all, these are my favorite pedals that I have tried and well worth the effort in setup once you are out on the road!
Converted after initial learning curve
Recent speedplay convert. Hated them at first, now a few months in and I absolutely love them and wouldn’t think of changing. Downside is the cleats are an order of magnitude more finicky to attach and service than spd-sl. But once you get used to it it’s still not *too* much work in the end, and the payoffs are easily worth it. The main payoff is the possibility of a much more natural and fine tuned fit. The customizable heal in/out float, plus the built in “rocking” float (allowing the foot to roll slightly left or right), allows for the best feeling pedal stroke I’ve ever experience in over a decade of road cycling.
Love the improvements!
I really like the improvements that have been incorporated into the pedals. First, the sealed bearings mean I no longer have to grease the pedals periodically. Second, the pedals can now be installed and removed with an Allen key instead of a pedal wrench which is much easier for me. Third, the pedals look much better now with the new stainless steel plates. Fourth, the fit and finish (especially the black paint on the spindles) is of very high quality. Fifth, I prefer the appearance of the black and the gray cleats over the old yellow cleats. As for the long term durability of the pedals, we will have to wait and see.
Speedplay. The Next Generation
I used the old school speedplay X series pedals for about two decades. I was sort of skeptical about the transition to the Wahoo clan. Would they be as good? After all, the initial acquisition of Speedplay seemed bumpy. No, they are not as good. . . they are WAY THE HECK BETTER! The metal ring around the pedal for longer life span. The cleat redesign. Really, firm, positive clip in and out. And the walkable cover--Sheer genius. I no longer have to stuff cleat protectors in my pocket. As usual, Mounting the cleat to the base is a bit of a pain, but that was always the case. Only thing I miss is the flats for a pedal wrench. Great job, Wahoo, on smartly updating these
