Pricey but worth it!
This is a great bag that I have used on multiple trips. I’ve used this on the GAP and the C&O for a thorough mud bath. Contents stayed dry! I do have a dropper post that I put this on, but I don’t use the dropper when it is on. I have a Live Devote carbon gravel bike. There isn’t anything I would change on it. As others state, it has options for the amount you want to pack in from very little to full and it still clips in nicely. So easy to grab your belongings and head into your night accommodations! Heading out with it for a 6 day trip in a few days and starting its 3rd summer of use, it’s still like brand new. Highly recommend biting the bullet and spending the money.
So stable, you'll forget it's there
I was concerned this bag wouldn't fit my bike because the specs say 8.5" clearance is required between the seat rails and the tire. I have 8.25". I installed it with the drybag fully stuffed and I had 1.25" of clearance between the seat pack and tire. That's not a lot, but I really wanted the larger (14L) capacity of the Terrapin. After using it on several trips and making sure to keep the side straps tight, I have had no problems. The 8.5" minimum allows about 1.5" of tire clearance. If you're a short person like me, maybe those numbers will help you decide if you want to try this. Leave the tags on for the test fit :) The bikepacking sites have raved about this pack for years, and there's not much else I can add to that chorus. The design of this pack is highly refined, and the construction and materials are top notch. The air valve on the dry bag is genius, and being able to slip it in and out of the holster makes packing and unpacking so much easier.
Fantastic
Perfect for an overnight hotel based bike packing trip. Just did the New River Trail in VA. Ivanhoe to Pulaski - Pulaski to Ivanhoe. Held everything I needed for a late spring trip. (We did ship our sneakers ahead) Also great for peeling off layers on those early spring rides. Well made, well thought out. Couldn't be happier. Ride is comfortable and solid. I had my doubts but they have all been dismissed. Sure beats the weight of a rack and pannier bags for a short trip!
The perfect seat pack
I used this pack on my 29er MTB to ride from El Paso Texas to Las Vegas Nevada n it was perfect. Its my new favorite seat pack. Super durable (im very rough on my gear) doesn't move at all when tightened correctly and the removable dry bag is key. It makes it so much easier to pack. I personally used it for my cold weather sleeping bag and bivy (so i dont have to go in n out of it a lot) and it was awesome. It has a drawstring retention line attached to it that i was able to put 2 separate jackets into (jacket shell and fleece sweater) and still had room. I have a few different seat packs n this has easily become my favorite and go to pack. The 14L is the "goldilocks" of sizes, with the perfect build. I dont like the larger or smaller sizes at all. (The 14L dry bag can be packed less and rolled tighter, there is an additional set of buckles for smaller packing which makes this the perfect pack in my opinion). Once mine eventually fails (as all things do), i will definitely buy another one.
Great design
Very solid feel. The two part system where the bag is easily detached from the seat mount is a major convenience bump. Really loving this thing so far and was worth the cost bump from the smaller REI seat pack.
Revelate - “buy it for life” bikepacking gear
I’ve been thoroughly impressed with the Revelate bags that my wife and I have used on bikepacking trips since 2016. We each have been proud owners of their frame bags since our first trips in the blue ridge mountains of Western North Carolina, and have seen their gear work its way into our everyday lives for bike commuting, trips to the grocery store, urban coffee rides, etc. The Terrapin Seat Pack is no different. I was fortunate to grab this on sale at REI at a nice discount and the Terrapin delivers excellent value and durability. The 14 liter seat pack features a high quality dry bag that features a bleed valve to evacuate the air from your packed bag. This feature makes a huge difference when you’re trying to squeeze in enough gear for a 3-4 day bikepacking trip and get everything sufficently compressed to fit securely in the harness. The harness features clever and secure straps that minimize sway compared to other brands’ designs that I have used. The top of the harness is outfitted with additional straps and a continuous bungee that I used to attach my tent’s wet rain fly during our most recent trip - this allowed it to dry out in the sun and wind while riding with occasional rotation throughout the day. I’ve also used those straps to secure my bedrock sandals, giving easy access to camp shoes the minute I get off my bike and kick off my riding shoes. On the back there are loops to attach lights or gear with a carabiner (you can dangle your coffee mug here for instagram points). Duplicated female buckle ends on the top of the bag allow for multiple options to connect and cinch down the harness, allowing easy adaptability for when the 14L dry bag is full or empty - this also means you don’t have to worry about removing the harness for fear of dangling straps if you want to take a quick ride with the dry bag completely removed. Overall, this is another excellent quality design from Revelate. After a year and several multi day bikepacking trips in NC and VA, it shows minimal wear and I expect it will remain as a go-to item in my gear bin for years to come. If you’re looking for long term durability and utility designed throughout the product, I would highly recommend the Terrapin from Revelate.
Epic Fail
Buyer beware that this is for hardtail bikes only. REI or Revelate should also state that in the description instead of just mentioning the dropper post. Bought for a 7 day Colorado to Utah mountain bike ride. The first issue was that the seam for the dry bag came apart after day 4 of the ride. I kept the rear shock locked out for the entire ride as it was not needed and because I was aware of the clearance requirements but the rear tire still rubbed the bag enough through the trip to eventually tear a hole through the “protective” outer layer. It’s not hard plastic. Then tore a hole through the dry bag as well, ruining one of my biking shirts. REI policy may not allow to be returned.
great bag
I only used this once on a two night three day trip in SE, Alaska. It rained 90% of my trip, but it kept all my gear dry and snug to my bag. Being able to take the bag off and store under my vestibule was really helpful. Only once did I snug it up tighter along the ride.
Buckle Fail
Revelate not standing behind their product. Buckle broke on first use with dry bag less than half full. Their solution was to try sell me a replacement buckle. Pretty disappointing on a bag of this cost from a company that used to be as reputable as Revelate.
Outstanding bag - just buy it
I upgraded to this pack from another one and am so glad I did. Having the ability to easily remove the dry bag and add it back without having to unstrap the pack from the bike is so convenient. And, it's burly, stable, and flexible too. Fantastic!
