Great platform bike rack for the price
Beech

This is my first hitch platform bike rack and I researched many options before ending up picking this one. What I was looking for: - easy load/unload as I am planning on riding every day with my kid after school - small enough to not block rear view window and camera when folded as I am leaving this on for most of the season - no frame contact and no hanging as most bike frames will need extra bars for this - fold down with bikes loaded to have access to trunk - fold away to access trunk when rack is in stored upright position - fit on a Tesla Model Y 2" factory hitch which has a 250lbs limit, tight bumper clearance and limited room for a hitch pin due to the hitch connector (wiring) - option to add more bikes in future when 2nd kid's bike gets too big for trunk - not too heavy so it is easy to move between cars and In the past I have used Thule as the go to brand for roof racks, ski carriers etc., but to find something that worked for me I looked at most brands including Yakima, Hollywood, Kuat, 1UP and Sarris. While 1UP racks and Kuat’s NV 2.0 were offering a few more features, they were nearly twice the price and both would have blocked my backup camera in the closed upright position. What I like: - U shape design doesn’t block the backup camera in upright position - most parking sensors are not ‘complaining’ when backing up with rack in upright position - when bikes are loaded I still have good visibility through the rear view window, only seeing the handle bar and seat of the tallest bike - very simple to load/unload a bike with the strap and the handle, bike sits firm on rack - U shape design lets you walk straight up to each bike when (un)loading the bikes - Fits the Model Y hitch well, leaving enough clearance in upright (closed) position and with bikes loaded - It is not super light, but easy to handle by one person and still can hold heavier bikes Some concerns that might matter to you: - you can only buy a 1 bike add-on for this rack vs the more expensive platform racks from 1UP, Thule or the Kuat NV that allow you to expand with 2 more bikes - it requires assembly. It isn’t difficult and all tools are included, but the instructions are brief and you are pretty much building the whole rack. Best to read a couple of steps ahead and look at the pictures to verify the correct position of some pieces before putting it together. - The rack isn’t ‘secured’ to your hitch. Kuat’s ‘secure tool’ to tighten the rack to your hitch is an Allen Key with a hole that fits over the little pin inside the hex bolt. My new set of Allen Keys already came with that hole, so not sure how ‘secure’ this really is. You will have to buy a hitch pin with a lock to prevent this. - This rack has 3 positions: upright (closed), open (with bikes loaded), lowered (when you need access to trunk with bikes already loaded). It does NOT have a position that would move the upright rack a little bit out of the way to open the trunk. So keeping this rack on the back of your car at all times means that you will have to lower the rack completely to load groceries. - There is a lot of plastic on this rack. All parts are made of plastic except for the main U bar that attaches to your hitch and the two bars that hold the handles that grab the tires. I had expected the hinges to be metal, but it is plastic rubbing on plastic. The handles that grab the tire are plastic and ratchet on the metal bar to get tight. All in all It is sturdy and I am not worried about my bikes, but I am not sure how long it will last considering the wear on the plastic moving parts. For the price it is a great starter platform bike rack with bike add-on option that fits my car and bikes well and I can live with the above concerns.

Loved this rack until...

Really liked this rack until my first trip out of state with it. Pros: Easy to assemble and install on my truck. Stable platform, easy to use. Cons: First trip (2) hours away, rear tire strap broke. I did not notice until I got to the destination, strap split completely in half. To me this is janky as heck. Spend hundreds of dollars on a rack system, maybe your expensive bike will make it. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk.

Excellent Platform Bike Rack

This is an excellent bike rack! I know there are more advanced models out there, but this suits my needs. It took about 1 - 1 1/2 hours to put together. Installing it on the hitch and removing it is super easy. Putting the bikes on the rack is effortless and they seem quite stable as I drive. For reference, I have a 2021 Subaru Forester with a 2" after-market hitch receiver. I did purchase the Kuat 2" hitch lock separately for added security. Very happy with my purchase!

Super solid, Well designed, Easy to assemble

Rack was boxed well, and easy to assemble in about 40 minutes. The instructions were very easy to follow and all the parts aligned well. The mechanism to go from stow position, to load, to reclined is solid. When the cam is tightened the rack is solidly attached to the car with no sway. There are a few reviews that claim the Transfer wobbled in the hitch: THERE IS NO DOUBT THESE PEOPLE ARE CONFUSED. If you tighten the cam, this thing absolutely will not wobble at all. It isn't tricky, difficult, or hit-or-miss. It is as easy as pie. Parts all appear to be sturdy and well-built, but this hasn't faced the stamina tests yet of a long ride or very bad road. I built a simple wooden rack that holds it when not in use, so that it is upright, safe, and out of the way.

QC needs work!

Bought this today thinking I would be able to use it this weekend. One of the front tire cradle bolts was cross threaded when trying to tighten the puck. Called support and they were very responsive. A replacement cradle assembly and hardware is on its way. Also noticed rust coming out of the non-locking end on the U arm. Quite disturbing considering I’ve paid for a brand new unit in a sealed box. QC must have missed this one completely and wonder about factory’s storage (outdoors?). Non-locking end cap also broke at the screw hole as I tried to make it fit onto the U arm. Extremely tight fit. Not a pleasant assembly experience, and must say I enjoy putting IKEA products together!

Excellent rack, great customer service at Kuat

I used to have a hatchback-mounted rack on my SUV. I bought the Kuat when I got a new car and my life is worth living again. No dealing with straps, no swaying bikes, no sweating and jostling, and I haven't said "I hate you, you SOB" once when working with the Kuat rack. Easy to assemble, slides into the hitch easily, the weight makes it easy to maneuver, and the bikes (I got the 2-bike model) go on and off in about 30 seconds each. The only thing I needed was a locking hitch pin, and the Kuat customer service people offered to send me on free, just for registering my purchase. A great purchase decision all around. Highly recommend.

The redesign post recall is terrible and dangerous

Just purchased on 10/22/2024. i had confirmed Kuat had fixed the recall design issues. The release mechanism is now a nightmare and requires 3 hands to lower or raise, and the reason is, i’m assuming the original version hitch pin would screw into the hitch and the rack was tight and secure. Now they have a simple pin and a cotter pin and the each sloops around and bounces, and the pin slides out to the heavy side so the cotter pin is the ONLY thing holding the rack on the vehicle. This will be going back in the morning

Complete Failure Go Thule !

Purchased the Küat transfer v2 to fit a 1.25” hitch. Instructions to assemble this beast were lacking miserably, had to YouTube to make sense of it. After frustrating through the build process we placed rack on the vehicle, massive amount of wiggle room in the hitch. Küat has a system where you can tighten rack while in the hitch, well, this portion was threaded wrong out of the box and the screw was stripped. Immediately called Küat customer service where they were less than interested in their faulty manufacturing. We will pay more for the dependability and confidence a Thule will provide. Was not worth the time or money, I do not recommend Küat.

Not impressed.

It took me about 40 min to assemble this rack. The process is pretty straightforward if you follow the manual. Majority of the parts are made out of plastic so I suspected the longevity of this product from the beginning. Once the rack was put together, I immediately loaded my bikes and headed to the park, which was 30 min away. After I unloaded the bikes, I noticed a significant crack at the bottom portion of the rear tire holder. The structure of this component has been compromised within 30 min of driving on highway! I can’t imagine what would happen if I drove off-road with this thing. Maybe it’s just a bad batch or something but I asked REI for an exchange and they went above and beyond to make it happen. Will update once I get the new rack.

Not fatbike compatible - do not buy

Regardless of what is claimed, this rack is not compatible with fatbikes. The fat tire height is too high and the rack is too narrow. The rack damaged the fork on my bike.

A great, platform based bike rack

A wonderful bike rack. I wanted a platform style bike rack and this one meets that criteria. I have a Saris Bone rack which holds the bikes by the top bar. Using the top bar method, my bikes were getting scratched, and often the petals of one bike were rubbing the spokes on the other bike. With the Kuat platform rack, loading and unloading the bikes is a lot easier and a lot faster. Plus my bikes are no longer getting scratched or damaged in transit. I am very happy to have switched to a platform based bike rack.
