Great Insoles
very durable insole, I use them in my Altama mid top maritime boot, The insole doesn't hold onto water and the insoles are great at drying quickly. I have used these insoles for white water rafting and paddle boarding and they have held up nicely and the cork doesn't fall apart/crumble. the Insoles are also very comfortable for daily walking and for long periods of standing.
COMFORT YOUR SOLE
I purchased the Sole Performance Shoe inserts for my Asolo hiking boots. Despite the high quality of the hiking boots we purchased, about 2% goes into the design of the incert of a boot. In fact big name hiking companies that make boots spend about 10 cents on the “sock liner” or sole of a boot. I have used a few different incerts and been happy with them all, but the Sole Performance are by far the best. They are extremely comfortable, and don’t over heat my feet on a long hike, and they break in very quickly. They are also made from recycled materials. They are definitely worth the money, and will take your boots and your hike to another level of comfort!!
Thick but not too thick
I bought these for a pair of Alico Tahoe boots, which don't have a lot of vertical toe height and I was pleasantly surprised. They formed to my foot very quickly and they absorb shock quite well. Very comfortable. I forget they're there. I read a lot of reviews where people complained about the cork and a variety of malfunctions. All I did was insert the cork insole into my boots and wear them. I suppose if you try some other harebrained technique to rapidly alter the flat format that comes out of the box you can create a disaster. Don't try it. Feet are naturally warm and will coax the cells in the cork into submission quickly.
The Soles Are Too Flimsy
I had the Ed Viesturs sole version of insoles and have been working great. I truly love them! However they are run down so I purchased the active thick sole as a replacement. They seemed flimsy. Rei graciously exchanged the active version for the performance cork version. Tried the performance sole going up to Camp Muir and on conditioning hikes like Poo poo/ Tiger mountain and I already started to experience signs of plantar fasciitis and hallux rigidus,, i.e burning balls of the feet, stings on the bottom of my feet, etc. None of the current sole models are not supportive enough for me. I wish they were more stiff, more rigid. Currently I am looking for other insoles.
Take it from a 5 to a 1
So unfortunate as these have been the best insoles I have ever used in the past and have given me a tremendous amount of foot relief even when compared to professional orthotics. The unfortunate part is the new "recycled wine cork design" is a complete failure. By trying to be cutesy and green they have ruined a perfectly good formula and in turn created something that fails all to often resulting in ruined insoles and losing more than saving. I have had two pair now one heated (exactly as per the instructions and exactly as i have done for years now) and one not heated where the cork has fallen apart when being inserted into the shoe. I have twice now had to return the insoles for new ones wasting gas and materials to go "green". Hope someone in R and D reads this. Will I still use them.....well yes because REI is awesome and they take care of their customers and when they hold together they offer great foot relief, shame really. Will I recommend them to someone else, nope.
Changes to cork have reduced quality
I have brought several sole insert through the years and do not use the stock ones that come with boots and shoes. Recently, Sole has changed the blue insert so that the bottoms are now cork. The cork insoles do not last. I used them for 2 weeks of backpacking in the Wind Rivers and the both soles developed crack cracking. I have Soles that have lasted for several years and many many trips and have stood up to the use. This was never an issue before this change to the cork layer.
Arch too narrow and insole edge gave me a blister
The shape of these insoles is great for my foot, but I have to return them for two reasons. First, they're too narrow. The inner side of my foot hit the (fairly sharp/firm) inner edge of the insole right around the back of my arch/beginning of my heel. It left a painful crease mark in my foot above the blister, too. Second, my feet do better with more cushioning. These felt hard under my feet, and the skin under my toes and the ball of my feet felt irritated by the end of my hike. I just wish I hadn't tried these on a steep hike; that was a painful descent! I see they make wide insoles too, but I just compared the photos and it looks like the brand's wide insoles are only wider closer to the front of the foot, not back in the heel/arch where I also need it.
Amazing support in all hiking shoes!
I've had these for over a year and absolutely love them. I got a size 6 but noticed REI doesn't offer them that small anymore. These insoles provide extra cushioning in my stiff Salomon backpacking boots. I tried them a few times in the new Topo Terraventure 2 hiking boots and they made a world of difference for my feet. This insole improved the stability of the shoe and added cushion where I needed it most, resulting in way less fatigue over long miles on the trail. I've tried the Active Thick with Metatarsal pads and they were too thick for my boots. The cork are way comfier, especially for a zero drop shoe. These are a winner!
Cork bases are not durable
The moldable recycled cork bases are not durable. I used to think Your Sole inserts were great. I have high arches and have worn their thick insoles for years. I bought a pair of the new cork bases last August. I returned them in May. The particles or cork started to crumble first on my left insole - so I applied duct tape to hold them together. When the right insole starter to fall apart I returned them. Using recycled cork may provide the customer with a warm fuzzy feeling of being ecologically responsible but I would be able to buy the old durable corkless version.
They need to last longer
I love how comfortable and supportive these soles are! They molded to my feet within a few days of use. I put them in my work boots that I wear five days a week and at the end of each shift, my feet and legs feel far less fatigue when compared to boots with the "stock" insoles. However, for the high price, they should go longer than 4 months before the cork base beginning to disintegrate. It got pretty bad with pieces of cork rolling around loose inside my boots and a significant drop-off in the support and comfort. In short- great comfort and functionality, but poor durability.
