Fit Altra shoes really well

I have medium to high arches and I underpronate (supinate). I recently developed plantar fasciitis in one of my feet. I purchased a pair of Altra trail running shoes, which have a wide toe box for natural splay and zero drop. My only complaint about the shoes was they had very little arch support. So I went to REI to see if Superfeet inserts would work. Because of the wide toe box, the Superfeet inserts were too narrow in the toe area and too wide in the heel. The REI sales person suggested these Sole performance medium wide inserts. They fit the Altra shoes perfectly (both in the toe and the heel) and did not require any trimming. I wore them out of the store. My shoes are 9.5 medium and the inserts are size 10(9.5) women’s. The inserts are very comfortable and provide great arch support. I am wearing them to mold rather than using the heat moldable method.

Failed after less than 50 miles

I bought my first Sole insoles to fit a pair of Altra Lone Peak 4 mid mesh shoes to use for three-season back packing, and specifically for a planned, longer hike. I was happy to find some insoles that were wide enough across the front foot area to fill out these shoe which have a wider toe box than most shoes. I had been (happily) using Smart Feet for my other shoes, but these were not quite wide enough to fill out the Altras. I tested out this combination on a number of road walks around the neighborhood and a did few 3.5-mile laps around a small local lake before taking them on the trail. Everything seemed fine after a total of maybe 25 miles of use. I had done the heat pre-molding in a 200ºF oven for a minute or two, as specified via a call to the manufacturer. After just a few days on the trail in Vermont (less than 30 miles), i developed a hot spot and a large blister in the  inside of the ball of my right foot. There seemed to be nothing wrong with the shoe, but when i checked the insole, the cork in the ball area had separated and cracked, and was balled up in the area of the blister. (See photos.) For what i paid for these, this kind of failure is unacceptable after such a short period of use.  Totally disappointed.

Be careful with custom heat molding

I followed the manufacturer's custom heat molding instructions (involving putting these insoles in the oven at 200F until indicator on sole turns black (no more than 3 minutes)) and as I was putting the first sole into my shoe, the adhesive holding the insole together partially came undone. The insole delaminated and became badly misaligned and kinked (i.e., ruined). What a disappointment! I would caution anyone following these instructions to be very careful. Or to just not use the heat method, and wear them in until the fit, which is one of the options SOLE gives. Otherwise, these insoles seemed like they would have been really good an supportive. They were a good fit for my Topo Terraventures.

Great Support and Wide Width Option!

These things are awesome. I have custom footbeds in my ski boots and I really appreciate good support. I have a wide foot and was trying on some light Merrell hikers in the Denver flagship REI store. I noticed these and the fact they came in wide width! I slipped them into the shoes and what a difference! I know that stock footbeds in shoes are mostly garbage. But I don't change them out in all my footwear. I may change that philosophy now. These are super comfortable (it took one 5-mile hike to get them perfect) and the support is awesome. They add stability and comfort to my already good shoes. I logged on to order another pair and thought I should probably add a review since I've become a huge fan. They're built like my custom ski boot footbeds, cost a fraction of the price and from the few hundred miles I've already put on them - they look like they're going to hold up for a long time.

Very Good but could be better !

#1.Make one without arch support-totally flat, #2.Make the large and small fit also in the natural spray wide design-keep the heel cop depression the same, #3. Remove the superficial chemical coloring(this absorbs into the sock and into the foot)#4. Make small Preferida holes under the arch & toebox area. The men’s size 12-Wide,fits my Softstar-Switchback-boot,Perfect just right:) It is also US size 12.

Comfortable but not a good material choice

I was really happy with these for the first few weeks I wore them. They refreshed a good pair of workboots and felt great. The problem came after a particularly cold, wet week where I was on my feet a lot: mildew. I've been in boots for most of my adult life. I've worn many pairs of hiking boots and work boots down to the midsole, through daily hard use. I know how to let them dry out and I always wear clean socks with liners. I never had any odor problems with this pair of boots before; I've never once had mildew or odor problems with any pair of boots I've worn since I was a teenager. But not too long after I started these porous cork insoles, my boots started to stink like a pile of laundry that got left in the washing machine for a week. Worse, all my really nice Darn Tough boot socks picked up the stink, too. And if mildew was festering in all those cork crevices, you know bacteria and more sinister fungi probably were, too. I tried cleaning the boots and insoles a few different ways. I tried increasingly drastic measures, up to and including bleach. Eventually I managed to get the stink out of the boots, although I'm sure alternating vinegar and bleach didn't do them any favors and I doubt they'll last as long as they might have. I picked up a new pair of boots anyway and let the old ones dry and air out for a solid week before I started alternating them, washed all my socks thoroughly, and threw away these insoles, and I haven't smelled mildew since. They're comfortable. They fit my feet well and they are in fact very wide, which isn't always easy to find. But I would absolutely not buy these or any similar cork insoles again after that experience.

Initially very comfortable - now with squeaking.

At first I really liked these. Immediately were an improvement over the existing foot beds in my Merrel shoes. However after wearing them a few days, the left foot bed began to make a squishing sound with every step, and I find it so annoying I will no longer be using these.

Great insole for Lone Peaks

The performance medium wide inserts work perfectly in my Altra Lone Peak 5’s! Highly recommend them if you are looking for replacements or something with a better fit than the stockers.

Falling apart after 60 - 70 miles of hiking

Very low quality product! I own multiple of the regular Sole Performance insoles and never had any issues with them. I got the wide ones because I got a pair of Topo Athletic hiking boots which require wide insoles. As someone else before me mentioned, the soles started breaking under the ball of the foot (big toe). Maybe the wide soles need some more reinforcement in the forefoot area? I can not recommend these specific insoles.
