Excellent Minimalist Shoe and Water Shoe.

I've been a Xero Shoes super fan since they went by another name! Xero products have had a great impact on my well being and I've worn nearly everything they've designed. The Aqua Sport is so good, that for my first outdoor use, I ran 50K in them, including mostly paved bike trail, but some snow, ice, grass, dirt, mud, and of course puddles. The Aqua Sport is actually a good trail running shoe, particularly for trails that include water crossings. They are great with thin socks or sockless. Few companies are doing truly minimalist shoes, sandals, boots, etc. Stylish, and comfortable. I love the Aqua Sports.

Slippery on rocks

I wear barefoot shoes and appreciate the design of this one - but this shoe is treacherous on wet rocks. Sometimes its good, but underwater, its like wearing ice skates. If I were on nothing but sand/clay - I would give this shoe a 5 - for wet rocks - a two (if you have great balance) or a 1 if not.

I got to test these shoes out in the Jungles of Co

Xero Shoes sent these shoes to me to review, the Aqua X Sports, just in time before leaving for my trip to Colombia for a MovNat Team Meeting & Natural Movement Retreat. I got to really put these to the test out there, with over a week of absolute immersion in a Natural Preserve - in the jungle and in the river. They were great running around, jumping, crawling, etc. on land and in water. Like any shoe they can be slippery on wet/mossy rocks, so move slow and mindfully in that case. We had some heavy rains out there, too, and I didn't want to get my Prios soaked, so I threw these on and had fun running around in the mud and puddles with them. They dried pretty quickly, too, when the Sun came back out. I have had tons of different water shoes before and they're all pretty minimalist, but these ones are definitely my favorite, they look the best, and they feel way more sturdier, like they're not going to fall apart if I use them with the intensity and frequency I like to move.

My New Favorite Travel Shoe

Do you like to travel? Do you struggle with choosing what shoes to take? I do. I enjoy jumping on a plane with only carry-on luggage. (I am looking forward to that day coming again!) The problem is I like to do lots of different activities when I arrive. Typically this means carting around a quiver of shoes; this no longer needs to be the case.
Xero sent a pair of their new Aqua X Sport for me to review, and they have hit the sweet spot. If you take the last and sole of my favorite lightweight running and hiking shoe, put an easy-draining, quick-drying mesh on top, you create magic. The Aqua X is a shoe capable of multiple functions while also being exceptionally light. The shoe was designed for the water. This means I can use it for any form of boating and leave the sandals at home. Having the Mesa Trail's sole means, it is also good to go for trail running and hiking. Think about it; that is one shoe doing three distinctly different jobs and all of them capably. It also packs down, taking very little space in my pack. I can wear them with or without socks and choose whether to use the insole. Speaking of the insole, it too is made to drain and incorporates Xero’s honeycomb adding to the weight reduction while allowing the area under your foot to breathe. As in all Xero Shoes, there is a nice wide toe box so the forefoot can spread out. Incorporate this with a flexible sole, and the foot can engage with the surface beneath. Finally, add in zero-drop from heel to toe, and the foot can interact with the ground the way it was designed to and initiate a healthy stride.
The Mesa Trails have given me a good insight into how the Aquas will behave and last because they have been my daily shoes since last August and used for consistent mountain play. The soles are holding up well especially given the abuse I hand out to them. They were probably not designed with sharp talus fields in mind.
In short, I am looking forward to it being warm enough to try the Aquas in their natural habitat. Until then, I will make do with using them as I would any other running shoe. And that is why I love them.

Great all-terrain shoe for wet/dry and heat

Xero was nice enough to send me a pair of these Aqua X-Sport shoes to review, and I had some time to test them out. They are unique in that they're really ventilated with large mesh on a lot of the upper parts of the shoe. They can evacuate water pretty quick, and are pretty comfortable when wearing barefoot, even when wet. I submerged them in water and went walking/running with them a bit, and the water comes out pretty quickly. The outsole has a nice substantial lug pattern for good traction off road, and good spacing so mud and dirt doesn't get stuck in the lugs. The sole is protective, while still being light and flexible. It's basically a shoe you can go anywhere with, even if the going gets wet. They're really lightweight, they're flexible, and comfortable. Another big plus in how well ventilated they are is being able to wear these in the summer and keep your feet cool. It gets pretty hot and humid here in the summer. I basically live in Xero sandals in the summer whenever I'm out wearing shoes, but now I can wear these (with or without socks) when I need something more than a sandal and still keep my feet cool. I think I'll be using these whenever it's hot and I'm doing something in/around water and still want some good traction, trail running, going to the river or beach, etc. But they'll especially probably be my new go to shoe for summer activity all around (walking, biking, etc) just because they keep my feet so much cooler.

Gem of a product for hiking & water adventure

I absolutely love Aqua X sport shoes. Recently, I put them to test at Lake 22 trail in Washington. There was water, rocky and muddy trails, and even some snow. The shoes did exceptionally well on all fronts. It performed perfectly as a minimalist trail shoe, and at the same time as a great water shoe. I got my feet wet on purpose many times and it dried off completely within minutes. A great product from Xero shoes!

Versatile water-friendly shoe, doesn't disappoint

Wow! Xero has done it again. A big thank you to Xero for sending me a pair of Aqua X Sports to review, they definitely fill the need for a versatile water-friendly shoe. The Aqua X Sports are feather light, super comfortable, and perfect for canoeing, kayaking, fishing, wading around lakes, rivers, streams, the beach, anywhere you want to go, but need a little protection for your feet. These are definitely the best water shoes I've tried. Straight out of the box, the design is impressive as they look as great as they perform, and fit true to size. As with all Xero shoes, the toe box is nice and wide, allowing your feet to move and flex naturally. These shoes slip on and off with ease, with a slightly stretchable upper material and elastic lace system with cord lock. There is also a loop on the heel to help pull them on. Even with the removable insole in place, water drains right out of the shoe keeping them light, comfortable, and able to dry quickly when out of the water. The mesh uppers are also porous enough that sand works its way out of the shoe when you leave the beach. In my opinion, the mesh uppers are far more practical and comfortable than the neoprene commonly used for aquatic shoes. I also did some trail running in these shoes and they are a very comfortable minimalist shoe- no issues. Since they are so lightweight and crushable, these would be an excellent choice for travel as well. Beacuse of the overall look and design, these shoes can be worn as casual footwear without looking like weird aqua-socks. So overall, I am very happy with the design and performance of these shoes. Highly recommended!

Great for walking. Stitching quality not the best.

I used these as comfortable summer walking shoes in an urban environment (lots of sidewalk; the rubber bottoms add some cushioning compared to other barefoot shoes). I don't use them as aqua shoes. The mesh top scrapes the top of my feet when I use them barefoot, and also entangles some of the hairs on my toes. So I only use them with socks, on warm days with no risk of rain, as I like the ventilation. After about 4-5 months, one of the eyelets holding the lace came loose on one of the shoes in the pair. It appears the stitching quality was poor. See the attached image. I exchanged it and we'll see how the next one does.

Toebox not as wide as I’d like.

Toebox is not as wide as I’d like. I have been wearing Altra shoes and am attempting to transition to barefoot shoes. These are comfortable, but the shoe feels narrow. I don’t see how they can call it a barefoot shoe if your toes cannot truly splay out in the toe box. I immediately noticed this the moment I tried them on. Sadly I will be returning. Xero shoes, if your listening, please make your shoes with a wider toebox.

Blisters and Sand are issues

I used these in the ATM cave in Belize which is an easy short hike with rock scrambling, but with several river crossings, so you are constantly wet, but hiking on dry ground. The sand that got in was annoying, not bad, but difficult to get out. The blisters on the top of my pinky toes was another story. The shoe's durable toe protection ends right on top of the toes and the transition to the mesh rubs when wet. The rest of my family had Keen sandals, and 2/3 of them also got blisters, but at least they didn't have to deal with sand stuck in the shoes.
