Sizing Notes

Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.

Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:

Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.

Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.

Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

IS THIS SHOE TRUE TO SIZE? The product Features above will provide a suggestion if Altra advises you to size up or down in this particular shoe. If no such note exists, please order your regular size.

This is the third and last pair of Lone Peaks I will ever try for hiking. I was talking with an REI shoe fitter, and complaining about my past experience with Lone Peaks. He told me Altra was bought by a new company and the shoes were completely redesign. They aren't, and does not no what he was talking about. First let me say, I was a product designer for shoes in the athletic industry for eight years. I know a great deal about shock attenuation and all the typical pros and cons of various shoe construction and materials used to provide the desired characteristics for different applications in footwear.. I personally appreciate zero drop footwear benefits, and have tried two previous pairs of Lone Peaks and found both pairs of earlier Lone Peaks to have zero torsional (twisting) stability. You can easily test torsional stability of any shoe. Grab th heel with one hand and the forefoot with the other. Twist in opposite directions. Compare different models of shoes. If you want/need more torsional stability for rougher trails or of trail hiking, go for more torsional stability. Sometime torsional stability comes at the cost of extra weight. Sometime not so much. Depends on how the show was designed and built. This means if you are hiking on flat trails and want a cushy feel, you'll get it for about 400 miles of use, before the Lone Peaks will be breaking down or coming apart. If you also hike on sloping trail, walking on boulders and broken up rock there is a tendency of this shoe to roll and twist. Especially if you get off trail for anything. This can lead to muscle and tendon stress or rolled ankles. There is no torsional support, the sole tread design is poor and so is the material used in the tread so it slips on anything slick or we. I typically hike at least one 2,000' elevation hike in the Columbia Gorge every week with no problems with a Topo Terraventure II (made much better), Salomon trail shoes, or even my Bedrock Carin Adventure Pro II sandals (love them), but developed soreness starting around the right knee and left hip muscle during one of those hikes with the Lone Peak 5s. We usually don't know the kind of trail surfaces we are going to be facing, so I would not recommend these to anyone.

LP5W overview(With comparison)

Altra Is definitely moving in the right direction with this wide edition: (-and make it even more wider-) Shaped for normal human healthy feet. It is more anatomical, more oblique forfoot, Hi-instep spacious toebox~ergonomically correct To a normal human healthy foot, Suitable for a diverse range of feet shapes. I personally have( "more than 30 pair of Altra's footwear") #1. More space in the toebox #2. More sticky rubber and traction on the outer soul #3. Stitched down to cap-bumper; Those are the main three upgrades that I noticed(now they must work on durability and structural integrity of the footwear itself.

Nothing better for me

Though trial and error, in finding what works best for me I came across these after another hiker on YouTube who was a thru hiker said these worked for him (IBTAT). So a little history, I bought North Face shoes and hiked a lot in them. Ended up with blisters and pain in my feet even with synthetic socks. So I decided to go with Altra Lone Peaks starting with the 4.0’s in the non RSM. I hiked many miles up and down mountains and NEVER have had a blister. I bought the 4.0’s in RSM (waterproof) and they worked like a charm as well in the rainy months here in WA. About 8 months ago I bought the 4.5’s and they seemed to be a bit tight around my foot so I continued to use the 4.0’s. Then the 5.0’s come out and wow!!!! I spend a lot of time reviewing before I purchase and was not disappointed when I pulled the trigger on these. You can totally feel the difference in the cushion and feel of these, plus they look really good. No hotspots, no pain in the heel, just really good shoes for me. Warning: when I first put them on, the left shoe felt perfect and the right one gave me a little pain in one spot on the insole. I was like “uggg, i messed up” and worried that they sucked. Man was I wrong! Wear them for a few days and let them mold to your feet. In my opinion they’re the best hiking shoe ever made. Been wearing on multiple long distance hikes and my feet have never had a blister or pain. They seem to run smaller than previous models, so I would use REI’s awesome return policy and when you buy them, get two pairs (one size bigger than you usually wear and one that you do) and feel them out before you decide.

Not the best shoe for hiking...

I just finished a section of the John Muir Trail, Mammoth to Whitney Portal, 177 miles. I wore the Lone Peak 3s last year on an 80 mile section of the JMT and was satisfied with their performance. This year I tried the Lone Peak 5s. I wore a size 12 in the 3s but the 12 in the 5's were huge! almost 2" of space between my toe and the front of the shoe. I sized down to 11.5 which still left over 1" of space and the width was ok, but not like the 3s. During my hike I noticed that despite using the "runner's loop" to lock my heel in place my foot was still sliding all over the place in the shoe. The shoe offers no stability. This caused my foot to shift alot on down hills and eventually caused my foot to jam into the front of the shoe despite the ample room. I also got a blister for the first time on top of my fourth left toe. I never get blisters. I did use SOL insoles in my shoes which I have used in all my shoes for the pass 6 years. The insoles definitely helped but could not over come the shoe's issues. The shoes is not as stabile as the 3. Durability. Well the shoes defiantly took a beating. The color peeled off of the toecap, the stitching came out of the sole on the toe cap and the shoes EGO foam lost it's spring. The heel cups on both shoes wore through which was surprising. Laces held up great and it did vent water fast. The soles still have tread but I wouldn't start another long distance hike in these shoes. They're done after 15 days and 180 miles. I did see many other hikers with this shoe, the yellow is unique. Well done on the marketing! Bottom line I would not hike in these again. Not long distance and not with a pack over 20lbs. They are probably great for trail running and "ultra light" back packing but for the JMT I wouldn't recommend them. Height 5'10" Weight 200lbs. Pack weight 25lbs. base, 30-35lbs. with bearcan, food and water.

Game changer…

I love these shoes. They held up very well on a recent trip up to the High Uintas Wilderness in Utah - over 50 miles round trip. Probably the most important aspect that was a game changer for me, was several river crossings where I needed to wear them for traction but needed them to dry quickly. The best result I found was to remove my socks and the insoles from the shoes and squeeze the water out of them once I crossed. If you do this, once you put the insoles back in and your dry socks back on, you won’t even notice if they’re still a little damp. Additionally, they’re super light and the traction on these is incredible. Only down side for me was the lime color being the only option available at my local REI - not a fan personally and it takes a while to mute the bright tone… but not impossible with enough time on the trail.

LP5W size 12-1/2 wide (goOD~2Go:)

Moving in the right direction, More anatomically correct, more oblique shaped Toebox, ergonomically capable to a more diverse foot range of customer base, #1. Stitched down toeCape #2. Sticky traction sole #3.more ergo-oblique human foot shaped toebox .(From my perspective that's the major 3 Upgrades)I have three pair of the new lone Peak wides . In the photographs there's Olympus 2.5 , lone Peak 4.5 , lone Peak 4 and Tushar boot, all 12-1/2 men's. The snow footprint compared next to a conventional hiking boot:(poor~sole:)Please produce more wide-wider forfoot shaped, hi-instape footwear.

LP5W vs Tushar (is very similar "With" LP5W more depth.

The lone Peak five wide it's just a (smidge wider) and Deeper instep-(good sticky rubber, Decent forefoot and toebox, structural integrity & durability, compared to other hiking shoes in its class' Questionable Depending on the actual user-and purpose.(The way I wear most Altra footwear is,Remove the insole and wear a heavy duty wool thick sock.(now if they could just make a real heavy duty approach shoe with the same design,1. Oblique anatomical 4foot, ergonomically correct footprint and toebox .

Good Enough, Better Than Most

Decent shoe for a serious trail runner with a mojor flaw for anyone requiring forefoot control. The major issue is the laces don't go far enough down towards the forefoot leaving the front of the foot, which as we know is responsible for control and direction, sloppy and incapable of being tied down or cinched. I compared it to my Olympus 4's and king MT2 as well as the myriad of altra road shoes I have and it confirmed that the laces merely end an inch higher up basically making a corset around the mid-foot and leaving an extremely sloppy and untightenable compartment that is the forefoot. So long switch backs... Anything other than trotting and hiking straight will be compromised as this shoe gives no stable tie down. It only feels good in front end in huge winter wright socks and I'm in socal so... Easily solved from a design standpo6.

Bright, Light, Durable, Good Grips

Very happy with this purchase. It was on sale and with experience buying a previous Altra I knew I needed a half size down from my norm. The claw grip on the sole helps me step with confidence and they are bright, lightweight, and durable. I’m looking forward to making maximum use of them!
