Like so many things, these days, quality is in very short supply- These particular HOKAS were at such a steep discount (half full retail), that it's pretty much the best thing I can say about them. Almost ten years ago, I discovered Hoka, and it prolonged my running career, much to my astonishment & delight- As weird an clunky as they all looked, when I put them on, they were amazing- Unfortunately, no longer true, as these Hoka Challenger ATR 6's are NOT the cushioned shoe that Hoka pioneered, and in fact are barely recognizable as actual Hoka's- Being just marginally as good as they need to be, in order to not be ordinary junk. Truly disappointing that apparently in order to compete with others that are now copying them, a once groundbreaking brand has diluted, and abandoned the very traits that made them so great. See no more reason for Hoka, or it's premium price point, and may even return these Challenger's, regardless of the killer sale on them, currently at REI- Sorry, but you asked...
I bought these shoes approximately 2 months ago and the black treads are falling off. Definitely not made well. Luckily REI has a good return policy.
This was my second pair of Hoka, the first one ATR5 is still in reasonably good shape and I still use them often. I purchased the ATR6 , but didn't use them for 4 months, because of an Achilles issue. I've used them sparingly for walking purposes only. You can see there is very little wear. The same piece on the other shoe only has half of the piece left. Very disappointed, considering the ATR5's are much older and have had a lot more use, but are still holding up. The shoes were very comfortable, supportive and light weight, but with the quality issues, I doubt if I would buy another pair of this brand
I wear these to walk / jog on the greenway and my neighborhood. Great support. Great fit. Love them.
It look nice but the sole fell apart sooner than I thought
Super comfy. Feels just like a Clifton (but slightly narrower toe box) with trail lugs - which is exactly what I wanted. At first, the upper was really stiff and pinched my big toes, but after a few uses it softened up. My only issue so far is that one of the lugs on the heel has come off (after only two runs). If that continues I'll have to return them, but I'm hoping not because they feel really nice after breaking them in.
I've gone about 250 miles in these on roads, gravel roads and trails and I love them. I wish the toe box was a little wide, but I don't have any toe issues using Injinji socks. When I use regular cotton, my little toe pinches a bit. They are really comfortable and I don't have much foot fatigue even after 10+ miles in them. I also noticed on gravel roads, those with regular walking shows complain about rocks and I don't feel most of them, even at my size/weight. I mostly walk/hike in mine, not much of a runner but I had stinsons before these and had to get a wider shoe and loved these ATR6.
Comfortable, well-cushioned shoe that works great on mixed surface runs. Some trail shoes feel awkward on pavement but these are versatile enough to handle traction and stability requirements of contsantly changing singletrack, protect your feet on hard gravel roads, or even feel good on sections of pavement that you may have to run to get to your favorite park with trails.
This was my first pair of Hoka’s and unfortunately they weren’t for me. Im an experienced runner, and have tried many brands with no issues. However these have an awkward sole and feel even when just standing. Toe box is really roomy as well, not too big, just roomier than usual. Anyway, I got this to use solely for trails and I did try them on the pavement as well and both resulted in serious pains in my upper calves. I thought maybe it was something that would adjust but it has never went away. I’ve never had this problem and I was running regularly before getting these shoes and don’t have the pain in my other running shoes. The way the shoe makes you land puts your body’s weight in weird spot on your stride. Unfortunately these weren’t for me, and I can only suggest others try them out before purchasing.
I never thought I would ever pay about $150 for a pair of walking/running shoes( I am kind of a frugal cheapskate). I begrudgingly tried a pair of these on and I was shocked by how much my knee pain immediately decreased. Went down from a 7 to a 2 while walking with these shoes. I have used the daily for about 3 weeks bd they make walking enjoyable again. Stairs are easier as well. I know they won’t cure my arthritis, but they make it tolerable and allow me to be more active.
