My four-star rating has three parts: 5 stars for set-up/delivery; 4.5 stars for the bike; and 2 stars for REI e-commerce. The Cary REI bike shop was great at getting the bike set up and answering some questions after delivery. The bike is solid and, at the sale price, was a good value for a carbon frame gravel bike with GRX 800/600 components. The WTB tires work pretty well on light gravel, although the wheels are limited to a max 40 mm tire. The frame is quick and nimble without being too twitchy. The Fizik seat is comfortable. As for sizing, my previous gravel bike was 58cm, and the Large in the Topstone was just a centimeter or so shorter in reach and stack. The fit finder on the web page was telling me to order Medium, but that would have been way too small. Even the Large feels a little tight when I get in the drops, but that may be due to my flexibility. My issue with the e-commerce is that the web page for the bike is a bit misleading. Someone had earlier asked what model year the bike was and REI responded with a model number (that you can’t find anywhere else on the internet). I sent in a question asking if the bike was one of the Topstone models with the unusual rear wheel dishing (I later learned Cannondale calls it “Asymmetric Integration”); REI responded that the bike was “the latest model.” That was literally true, but didn’t answer the question. In fact, I learned the model year of the bike when I got the email that the bike had been delivered to my local store and the item was referred to as “Cannondale Topstone Carbon 5 ’21.” 2021 was the last year Cannondale made the Topstone Carbon 5, and yes, it does have the “Asymmetric Integration” rear wheel. That means you can’t just drop in a normally dished rear wheel, but instead a bike shop has to specially dish the wheel. Since I probably won’t be changing the wheels until they fail (and my last WTB wheelset failed at 3 years), it is not such a big deal that I dislike the bike. I just think REI could have been a bit more transparent and informative with their web page and Q&A.
