Cannondale Topstone Carbon 5 Bike
With rear suspension and fast-rolling 700c wheels, the Cannondale Topstone Carbon 5 bike is as capable off road as it is on, offering comfort, control and speed for big days on gravel and pavement.
Key Details
- Shimano GRX 800/600 2 x 11-speed drivetrain uses an adjustable chain stabilizer to cut chain chatter and maintain crisp, accurate shifting over bumpy ground
- Lightweight KingPin rear suspension system lets you ride harder on dirt and more smoothly on pavement, giving you better control, traction and comfort
- KingPin system provides up to 30 mm of travel at the saddle thanks to a thru-axle pivot joining the seatstays and seat tube
- Thru-axle pivot locks the left and right seatstays together, preventing independent rotation for a solid feel and an instantaneous response
- Comes with big 700c x 37 mm tires for grip and comfort, but fits up to 700c x 40 mm tires (not included) thanks to a roomy design with tons of clearance
- Also fits smaller 650b wheels with up to 48 mm wide tires for riders seeking maximum flotation
- Fully fender ready: A removable fender bridge on the rear stays is there when you need it and gone when you don't
- Store gear and water with multiposition mounts on the top tube, seat tube and under the down tube—there are even mounts on the fork
- Speed Release thru axles offer the stiffness and solid feel of a thru axle with the easy use of a quick-release axle; compatible with most thru-axle wheelsets
- Direct Line internal cable routing guides the cables and housing through the frame using an internal tube from entry to exit for headache-free service
- Refined geometry and rider position deliver an experience that's stable, composed and comfortable without losing that spark
- Built to accept an internally routed 27.2 mm dropper seatpost (not included)
- Balanced riding position is upright enough for comfort over the long haul and control over technical off-road terrain, yet still low and forward enough for speedy efficiency
- OutFront steering geometry keeps the steering light and agile, while positioning the wheel farther in front of the rider for stability and confidence on rougher stuff
- An integrated wheel sensor delivers hyperaccurate speed, route and distance info, bike registration, service reminders and more—all through the free Cannondale app
- Suspension and overall frame ride-feel are custom-tuned by size using different carbon layup and tube dimensions
- Pedals not included
- NOTE: Specs and images are subject to change based on component availability

Sizing Notes
Measurements are stated in centimeters unless otherwise indicated.
How we measure bikes
- Standover Height Standover Height is a measurement from the ground to the top of the top tube, measured at the midpoint of the top tube.
- Reach Reach is the horizontal distance from the center of the cranks to the center of the head tube, measured at head tube level.
- Stack Stack is the vertical distance from the center of the cranks to the center of the head tube, measured to the top of the head tube.
- Effective Top Tube Effective top tube is the distance from the center of the head tube to the center of the seat tube/seat post, measured parallel to the ground.
- Seat Tube Center to Top Seat Tube length is the measurement of the seat tube, from the center of the cranks to the top of the seat tube.
- Head Tube Length Head Tube Length is measured from the bottom to the top of the head tube.
- Head Tube Angle Head Tube Angle is the acute angle between the head tube and the ground (measured towards the rear of the bike)
- Seat Tube Angle Seat Tube Angle is the acute angle between the seat tube and the ground (measured towards the rear of the bike).
- Bottom Bracket Height Bottom Bracket Height is a measurement taken vertically from the ground up to the center of the cranks.
- Wheelbase Wheelbase is the measurement from the center of the front axle to the center of the rear axle.
- Chainstay Length Chainstay Length is the measurement from the center of the cranks to the center of the rear axle.
- Fork Offset Fork Offset, or rake, is the distance from the front axle to a line drawn parallel to the center of the head tube or steering axis.

Nice Bike
My four-star rating has three parts: 5 stars for set-up/delivery; 4.5 stars for the bike; and 2 stars for REI e-commerce. The Cary REI bike shop was great at getting the bike set up and answering some questions after delivery. The bike is solid and, at the sale price, was a good value for a carbon frame gravel bike with GRX 800/600 components. The WTB tires work pretty well on light gravel, although the wheels are limited to a max 40 mm tire. The frame is quick and nimble without being too twitchy. The Fizik seat is comfortable. As for sizing, my previous gravel bike was 58cm, and the Large in the Topstone was just a centimeter or so shorter in reach and stack. The fit finder on the web page was telling me to order Medium, but that would have been way too small. Even the Large feels a little tight when I get in the drops, but that may be due to my flexibility. My issue with the e-commerce is that the web page for the bike is a bit misleading. Someone had earlier asked what model year the bike was and REI responded with a model number (that you can’t find anywhere else on the internet). I sent in a question asking if the bike was one of the Topstone models with the unusual rear wheel dishing (I later learned Cannondale calls it “Asymmetric Integration”); REI responded that the bike was “the latest model.” That was literally true, but didn’t answer the question. In fact, I learned the model year of the bike when I got the email that the bike had been delivered to my local store and the item was referred to as “Cannondale Topstone Carbon 5 ’21.” 2021 was the last year Cannondale made the Topstone Carbon 5, and yes, it does have the “Asymmetric Integration” rear wheel. That means you can’t just drop in a normally dished rear wheel, but instead a bike shop has to specially dish the wheel. Since I probably won’t be changing the wheels until they fail (and my last WTB wheelset failed at 3 years), it is not such a big deal that I dislike the bike. I just think REI could have been a bit more transparent and informative with their web page and Q&A.
