I bought these reflective replacement laces to replace the flashy striped laces that came on my La Sportiva trail/running shoes. (The La Sportiva laces self-destructed after only a few months—the outer covering split and the interior white strands emerged like an explosion of dandelion seeds. La Sportiva warranty and web site explicitly does not cover laces. Pretty lame.) So I thought these laces from REI would do the trick. Unfortunately, their construction-and longevitiy-is very similar to the La Sportiva. The replacements failed in an identical manner after very little wear. I'd rate these reflective REI laces ZERO if I could. Solution? I was traveling, so I went to my local drugstore, bought off-the-shelf traditional thick black cotton(?) "string" laces. Due to their traditional construction, without a plastic sheath, it would be impossible for them to fail as spectacularly as the others. They currently show no signs of wear.
