Super capable, outstanding value.

I have owned many bicycles, and still own several. This bike has proven its capabilities in the woods on roots and rock and in very technical terrain. I find myself using this bike in the woods more than I thought I would, much like a mountain bike. It is also outstanding on normal gravel, bad roads and for general commuting. I find the right quality to be Very comfortable and forgiving. The gearing choice here favors fully loaded touring, So if you’re looking for top end speed, you have to change a gear ring. All in all, an excellent value compared to Surly, All City, Bombtrack, or any of the boutique steel adventure bikes.

Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast

After my first bike packing trip, I am very impressed with this bike. As many people mentioned, this is not a speed bike, the gearing is made for climbing. And climbing it does! 650 tires and steel frame make this bike feel smooth and stable when loaded riding on any surface. Bar shifters is something to get used to. But once you get a hang of it, it's easy to use. Overall, this is not a fancy bike. It's an adventure bike designed to handle rough conditions. Initially I was a bit skeptical due to its weight, but the smoothness of a long ride is so worth it. This bike outperforms many "low end" carbon bikes, and is totally worth the money.

One stop shop

This is my new one bike quiver. I use it for my daily commute (so far only the summer) and it just works. It's a super comfy ride. I swapped the saddle for a Brooks leather saddle and put on WTB Horizon 47mm slicks, which really made a difference on the tarmac and pothole mixture in Seattle. It's not the fastest and definitely not the lightest, but the handling is solid and it works with all sorts of bags and racks. The low gearing at 16" gear inches is outstanding, it's a bit low on the top end and I spin out around 24 mph, but that's not what this is for. Overall I love it and want to try it out on gravel/single track. May be I'll upgrade to a 5-star if that goes well.

Jack of all trades.

What a lovely addition to the stable. This bike has replaced 2 of my older (road, and MTB) for my everyday use. It is the most most comfortable bike I own. I love the simplicity of bar end shifters and the cushy ride of plus tires. My commute is mostly paved path, but this bike has me seeking the path less traveled. Warmer weather can bring a lot of crowding to the shared paths on my route, and now i have no problems trucking over grass and rooted side paths to avoid traffic. The stock tires look full MTB, but roll fast on pavement, and a super quiet. Gearing is on the lower end, so don't expect to win any Strava crowns. This one was built for smiles. For the money REI has chosen a great, reliable groupset. I think this one will get a lot of use for years to come. Thanks REI!

Would win the “best all around” superlative

Just picked up my 3.1. Expected it to be sluggish and heavy. It’s not! Any time I try to think there’s something that can be gained in an area, it would sacrifice something about this delicate balance. It’s comfortable, it’s got good brakes, a nice steel frame, it rolls over bumps like nobody’s business and gives a confident response that feels nimble and quick. Even the 2x system I thought would be too much for my lizard 1x preferring brain, but that second cog up front comes in handy when you least expect it. A large tsunami of a hill coming up? It’s got your back. Top end is plenty enough for touring or bikepacking. So far this is an excellent excellent ride.

So glad they brought it back!

I'm so glad they brought this model back. I've found nothing like it. I owned it in 2020 but it was stolen last year. I was overjoyed to walk into an REI and see it brought back. Immediately purchased and now it's been on dirt roads and paved paths with me again -- this bike is so comfortable and such a smooth ride. These tires can handle almost anything, too.

Affordable & well designed commuter/bikepacker!

Love this bike - its a great value! I bought it because I wanted a bike I could use to explore multi-surface environments throughout the urban environment, & a bike that I could take out into the hills of SE Ohio and navigate across the variety of non-technical single track, fire roads, logging roads, and general gravel throughout Wayne National Forest and other national forests around the US. No complaints as it was presented out of the REI bikeshop. Its a comfortable bike and the combination of the steel frame/wide tires/flared drop bars dampen vibration and make for a smooth easy to handle ride on urban bricks/gravel/dirt & uneven asphalt. My longer-term intention of this bike is to make it a tough everyday urban commuter that I can adapt as needed for self-supported bikepacking tours and general nature-exploration in remote areas. The ample mounting points and tough vibration-dampening steel will make it easy to equip for both heavy bikepacking and lighter tours. To better optimize the bike for both of my urban commuter and gravel-bikepacking intentions I'll probably scrap the generic stock wheelset and build two new upgraded wheelsets that match or exceed the durability of the frame and deore components, and I'll mount different tubeless tires that are more optimized for the urban commuting (maybe WTB Horizon @ 47mm) and for riding gravel-fireroad-single track (maybe Vittoria Barzo or Mezcal 2.1"). The tire clearance is spec'd at 2"/50mm, and the stock tires are Ranger 2.0s, which are actually more like 2.1" when I measured with a caliper - and with these Ranger 2.0s there is still about 1/4" clearance between the stays/fork on each side of tire. The bar end shifters are fine if you are not riding in a way where you need to rapidly shift through technical terrain, and I appreciate their durability and serviceability, but I don't love how clunky they are to shift at a moments notice -I plan to replace them with the Gevanalle TRP-Hylex integrated cyclocross shifters. The gear ratio is designed for bikepacking with a heavy load through hills, so the bike is NOT fast and is easily outpaced by faster gravel and road bikes. The speed isn't a problem for me and its still fast enough to cruise comfortably along urban bike paths...Overall a great bike for the price and I am very happy with it!

Good bike, just not for me

The quality of the bike is great, but had to return it due to the end bar shifters. I found myself moving my hands all over the place to shift, break, and cruise. The shifters are also very finicky and would shift gears every time I stored my bike or bumped into the shifters. If you enjoy end bar shifters, this bike is for you!

Comfortable and solid

I got this bike a week ago and have put some miles on a local paved rail trail. I put some WTB Byway tires on it and it performs great. I plan to do some longer rides like RAGBRAI, and this is a perfect bike to take across Iowa. I expect this bike to serve me well for many years. At 40% off, it was a no brainer.
