Great alternative to MSRs!

MSRs were out of my budget so luckily I found these on clearance for $140 + tax. Did about 4 miles in deep snow and rolling hills in them yesterday and had no issues. Great flotation. I love the ample side traction traction teeth for side hilling, love the heel lifts, love the lightness despite the fact that they are 26" long. The straps were easy to adjust and I did not have to retighten them once, although small "keeper hooks" on the strap tuck in clips would be nice so the loose ends of the straps don't come loose. The lack of a second crampon on the pivoting section took some getting used to for descents but I adjusted. Since the one crampon that is there points to the front at a 45 degree angle, I found I could get downhill traction by rotating my foot forward and pressing down. Also, the lack of second crampon prevents the grapefruit-sized balls of icy snow forming between the two crampons that I experienced with my Costco snowshoes, which are difficult to knock loose even with trekking poles. My maintain concern is longevity due to the plastic material. If this turns out to be a problem I'll come back and update the review.

Light snowshoes with lots of side traction

I love these snowshoes. They are light but with a weight range of 200-230#, they are more than big enough for me and my 35-lb backpack. They have heel lifts for steep slopes, lots of side traction for side hilling, and best of all a distinctive footprint so that when I'm returning on an out and back course I can easily differentiate my own footsteps from the plethora of MSR shoes that are out there! However, there are a few design issues that I MacGyvered (see attached photo) but that I think could be improved. First, the heel straps constantly come loose from the keeper clip, requiring me to stop and refasten them. I solved this by putting rubber bands on the fixed part of the strap, that I can use to better secure the strap ends. Next, the cloth instep straps frayed on the outside after 20 or so outings (see photo). I surmise this was caused as the instep portion repeatedly fell through the shoe and rubbed against the side traction points. Here is where I was impressed with Atlas. I contacted them and they replaced the shoes for free, except for the return postage. To prevent the fraying from happening again on my new shoes, I wrapped that portion of the straps with duct tape. But it does seem like something that merits a design change by reinforcing that part of the strap somehow.

Nice light snowshoes

Very good trail shoes and light. As expected they sunk in 15” of fresh light snow but the light weight made breaking trail less taxing. The best use is on a broken trail or fresh snow that is a foot deep or less. The bindings are quick to cinch up. My only gripe is I wish the heel strap was mounted higher to snug above the heel instead of right on it. Pretty quiet in the trail and they shed snow well. A good value. I wanted single twist type bindings but these were more in my price range and are lighter than most.

Great bang for your $

Contrary to other reviews, I find the bindings awesome. Easy to get into and out of. Put 5miles on them in 18” of fresh powder in rolling hills and they floated on top. Good side hilling traction. Comfortable and light

love em

Wanted a nice pair that was better than the cheapest option but not outrageously expensive. Very light and comfortable, didn’t even realize they have a clip by your heel to help with going up hills until I got it!

Not an easy entry/exit nor a versatile fit

We were completely new to snowshoeing and had great hopes for the Helium. But we also wanted to use it with our Sorels and we wanted to be able to get into and out of them easily. The webbing makes the former nigh on impossible and it also makes the latter way too difficult. As a result we returned them. Along the way we rented some snowshoes that solved both issues and so we bought yet another pair, from REI, that addressed the problems.
