Goes EVERYWHERE with me
I’ve had my Travel Tripod in aluminium for about six months now. I don’t usually write gushing reviews, but this thing (along with the Mobile range which I also completely love) is a gamechanger. It is light, super-compact and like all PD stuff is an absolute pleasure to use. It is most often paired with a heavy and bulky Canon 6D SLR + 70-200mm and is rock-solid. This week I even used it for rostrum type shots which saved me getting out the Manfrotto 190 that I usually use for these. I’m far more likely to take tripod shots now as it’s such a pleasure to use. I also pair it with a Swarovski ATX80 spotting scope and I find the compact ball-joint is perfect. It provided a solid platform for watching ospreys in North Wales last week. I also used the beautifully-designed ‘hidden’ phone holder for some quick videos of bats while there. I’m sure I’d prefer to have the carbon model, but the aluminium one provides great value for a smaller budget so no regrets. The only modification I’ve made is to add a lanyard to the clip-in hex tool as it feels a bit vulnerable and it’s too lovely to lose! Overall, this lovely lump of metal is a total pleasure to use and lives up to all the hype. Get one. Really.
Impressed.
I was already impressed with my other PD products but this tripod blew me away. Extremely well thought out. You can tell they did their research on what everyone wanted/needed.
Doesn't fit the bag after adding the spike feet
This is a great product, and you'll get all the info from other reviews. But consider this: If you're taking this tripod for rugged terrain, you'll probably purchase the additional spike feet from peak design, which are great. BUT the tripod with the spikes mounted (which are not large, they add maybe 2" to the length does NOT FIT the tripod case, which is the main way in which I was planning to attach the tripod to my backpack. The case is great, nicely build but its so SNUG that I can't use it with the spikes and it's frankly kinda maddening from a product that seems so user-centered. It really rained on my pared with that detail, the case and the spikes both were part of the reason why I bought this tripod
Still a beast of a tripod
The first time I saw this Tripod in kickstarter I was sure, this will be my last tripod for the next years. I am still using the carbon tripod and it's still a joy. it is very compact and light and of course fits wonderfully with my Peak Design bags and backpacks. The ability to quickly clip the camera or my mobile phone onto it and pack it back together again is just great. Even with a larger camera like the fujifilm GW690II, stability is not an issue. In the meantime, it has a few scratches here and there, but nothing has changed in terms of functionality; it is still possible to work fluidly with the tripod. Top product and I haven't regretted a penny!
With spike feet, the tripod doesn't fit the case
I love everything about this tripod, but a bid added value for me was the case that comes with it, and the options to add spike feet for rugged terrain. So after going back and forth, I eventually got it, and honestly, it's maddening! The bag is snug enough even without adding the spike feed, but after mounting them, it just doesn't fit anymore. And it's not by much, it literally needed half an inch of material. It's such a small thing, honestly, it's ridiculous. Put such a damper on this purchase for me. Now I'm evaluating my skills as a sewist, I want to retrofit the bag to add more material to it because I can't attach it to my backpack otherwise. *frustrated grunt*
Engineering marvel
I've had this tripod for about 3 weeks and it certainly lives up to the description and the video. It is so nice to experience all the thoughtful design features like the phone mount tucked away in the center column or the hex tools attached to one leg. It's all this touches that assure you that you have purchased a quality product. The inverted ball head with just one adjustment is so quick to use. I love this tripod.
Awesome tripod
I have now owned this tripod for about a month and it is exactly what I wanted. Super light weight and compact fits in my day pack! It deploys quickly and the quality is unmatched. I was a little hesitant at first to pull the trigger on purchase as these tripods are not cheap, ultimately I’m happy I did. In photography equipment you get what you pay for and this was worth the extra money!
I pushed this thing. It did great!
So I used this on my travels to Alaska and used it with both my a6400 as my b cam to record myself photographing handheld AND with my a7Riii with a 200-600. Here’s what I noticed: The tripod legs would need to be tightened to not slip under the weight of the camera and/or if I put my camera bag on the hook. Granted, it was a heavier bag. But when you tighten them, it makes them a little more stiff to open and close the legs when setting up and tearing down the tripod. Secondly, if you are doing any video, get the head adapter and a fluid head if doing farther, moving shots Worth the extra weight and space. It’s very difficult to track smoothly using the ball head. Finally, I took a tiny piece of skateboard tape and put it on the right side of the locking mechanism that slides. This way, I had a textured point of reference with my hand to know that when tightening and loosening the ball head when I was changing angles, that I never accidentally set it to the unlock position. This would be a great thing for Peak Design to add if possible. That way you know it’s locked without having to look at the tripod. Other than those things: worth every penny. I used this in every position and place imaginable. In rivers and on river banks. The small size made it great to reduce weight in my bag. Taking it to Boston for whale watching next week. Definitely a part of my travel bag now.
Great for real estate photographers.
I just purchased another of the Peak Design _ Travel Tripod and as I unboxed it I wanted to give my thoughts about this great tripod! I use it for real estate photography for aboiut four years and I put it to work on a daily basis shooting houses all day. The design is great. My favorite thing about it is the ball head. It is wonderful. The low profile plate snugly fits in the low profile ball head and locks in with a slide of the lock plate. The legs are easy to deploy and lock in with a lever (much easily then circle tighten ones). That said, they to loosen over time but can easily be tightened with the provided hex wrenches. I am too cheap to pay the extra for carbon fiber. I feel the aluminum model light enough. Now my little "issues". First off, I am very hard on my gear. (I am a Taurus, see the photos). The phone adapter was broken and lost almost immediately but I didn't use it much. The pull-out knob for the center column broke off. It pulls out and is not as strong in the pulled out position (I should just have pushed it in every time but...). And, why I had to buy and new one was the bottom section of one leg fell off finally and I couldn't find it. Why it fell off was the rubber feet catch on stuff. For me, I go into backyard and through fences and the foot caught on a fence and pulled off. I think the wide feet are great but should have go up at angles on the top, coned shaped up he legs, so it is not like a 90 degree hook. Then, the new tripod came packed so well, maybe too well. First off, I will never use the nice case and that box it came in looks like it costs a lot. So PD, maybe save some bucks not making those things so nice or do some R&D to see if people actually use them. I will end with this though, THIS IS A GREAT TRIPOD FOR REAL ESTATE PHOTOGRAPHERS!!!!
Exceptional Design...
I have had this Peak Design carbon fiber tripod for about a year now, and it's one of my favorite photography purchases. It's nice to finally have a tripod that I don't just tolerate, but enjoy using. I love this thing. Carrying one of my old tripods is almost offensive to my hand after holding this peak design tripod. The small form factor and light weight design make it almost unnoticeable while I'm carrying it in my backpack. The ball head takes a little bit of getting used to, but it's actually well thought out and has good ergonomics. The leg locks are wonderful and allows the tripod to be deployed and retracted very quickly (I hate twist locks with the white hot passion of a thousand burning suns). This tripod has pretty much made my larger tripod obsolete given how stable it is. I have no problem throwing my Sony 200-600mm onto it. And if I want to use a different head, it's easy to lock down the PD head and attach a third party one. The only real downside that I have experienced with the PD head is that its not great for panning. The removable center column is great for getting down low. There is only one issue I have with it. It's very easy to forget that you have removed it and want to raise the camera height, then accidently pulling the center column out, potentially leading to a dropped camera. This almost happened to me once. Fortunately I had a good hold on my camera, or it would have been a very sad day. I would love to see a stopper added as an accessory. I have actually 3D printed my own and I'm much more comfortable when it's there (see attached photo). I also 3D printed a protective sleeve for the ball head controller ring. It is anodized aluminum and very easy to mark up while out hiking, and with it being attached to the outside of ones backpack. I think a rubberized coating would be a nice addition for this particular part. And maybe even for some of the leg lock components. But this is really just to keep it pretty. Overall this is an excellent, innovative tripod, which is why I keep buying peak design products. I'm a sucker for innovation. If you're on the fence about buying this tripod, just buy it.
