Excellent ultralight axe

Purchased in the 50cm length, which is just short enough to carry in a daypack without the shaft sticking out and snagging on overhead obstructions. This axe (particularly in the shorter sizes) is perfect for scenarios where you don't expect to use it much: short snow covered sections of trail, glissades, glacier travel. So light you won't notice it's there, but quite capable when you need it. The pick is sharp! For this reason a pick protector is highly recommended when not in use. The adze is minimally useful, good more for breaking up hard snow to melt for water than cutting steps. If you want something more affordable consider the Corsa Alpine instead -- it has similar functionality and is only minimally heavier, but unfortunately isn't available in a 50cm length.

Great for backpacking.

I used this ice axe for years. I primarily bought it for summer backpacking and I think that is where it shines. If you are going on a trip you expect to only use the ice axe for a few miles out of the whole excursion this is perfect. But then I started using it for serious mountaineering and couloir skiing and it continued to be awesome. Until I broke the adze digging out buried snow anchors for my tent that froze overnight. If you actually expect to be swinging this ice axe at all buy something with a full steel head.
