Poles for beach sheltor
These adjustable poles are quality. We used them to make a wind break w/roof for cooking on the beach. The wind varied from 15-25 mph and the preformed better than expected.
Versatile and Handy
In case you’re the type of buyer who doesn’t read specs and ‘what’s included’, please be aware this DOES NOT include a tarp (nor does it claim to... you gotta take time to know what you’re buying). I personally tried it out with 2 different tarps: the REI 12x12 one as well as a cheap-o standard one you’d find at your average Walmart or small town gas station. I was VERY pleased with the results. Depending on the tarp, you can get a pretty sizable shelter up, and compared to a canopy or other option, it takes up WAY less space and is much lighter. This is an excellent addition to my car camping setup to replace the bulky and heavy canopy I was using, but I’m considering bringing it on my next BWCA trip, it’s just that light and I’m just that impressed.
Useful for Car Camping
I got this kit to go car camping in Maine for 5 days. We had plenty of trees to tie our tarp to, but the poles in the kit let us use a 12x16 tarp and keep it up off of our heads. The poles were sturdy and it was handy to have stakes and guy lines in the bag with the kit. I looked at the orange single poles, which are smaller in diameter and might have purchased them if the 8 foot ones had been in stock. Once I used this kit, I was glad I got it. I think it is most suitable for car camping and if I was relying on these poles alone, I would need 2 kits.
Only folds to 28 1/2 inches, not 22
The poles seem sturdy but they only fold down to 28 1/2 inches rather than the 22 inches as stated. That's the reason for not recommending the product assuming the buyer is looking for something that folds down to 22.
Used at burning man, held up wonderfully.
At first I was kind of annoyed that two poles was this expensive but when I got to open them up and actually use them in an extremely windy situation I was super impressed.
Heavy Duty
I motorcycle camp so some weight is ok. I use a Kelly Noah tarp at campsites. Last September in Newfoundland one of my standard REI poles broke in strong wind. Bought these heavier ones hoping for more durability. I Like that they come with a case that I can strap to bike and I can wrap tarp around poles inside case.
Useful, light, adaptable, but requires expertise.
Interesting setting up a tarp with only two poles. Requires some expertise and access to suitable anchors for the shelter to set up. Once done, I was surprised at how robust the shelter was despite strong winds.
It works
It works. The font used on Highway signs is Highway gothic. Thirty word minimum met.
Worth $120???
In the need for an extra last-minute set of adjustable poles for that camp table awning you want to set up on your next high country car camping trip in southern CO during monsoon season??? Well, these will get at least half of that mission done (hint, you really need 4 poles to do it right). The poles are extra sturdy, but for $120, you get two. plus 4 stakes and 4 pieces of cord. Are these items worth $120 you ask? No, they are not. REI, what happened to your value?
Expensive and worthless standalone product.
The picture of this looks like it includes the tarp but it does not. Would you buy a tent without the rainfly? Probably not. At this price point, I would have expected a full kit to do what the picture shows. A rare REI disappointment.
