I contribute my success of submitting Mount Kilimanjaro to this pack. It is extremely comfortable and when I was in the military I could really use this.
This pack has every feature one would want in a pack except for a MAJOR design flaw. It has 2 friction points on the back adjustment system which rub on my back and leave me with two red chaffing marks and bruises after every long hike with heavier loads (40-45lbs). I originally bought this for mountaineering and it was perfect because I was wearing so many layers due to cold weather. Now that I'm using it in warm weather without the extra layers on my upper body, I have found that the 2 adjustment strap connection points rub on my back and have removed the skin and caused painful bruising. I have adjusted the pack a number of times to see if it would help but have found that nothing works. I own numerous packs for every possible situation and although I love the features of this pack it is simply too painful to use in warmer weather when I am not wearing extra layers to provide some protection for my back. I hate to say it because I love the features but coming from someone that wears a pack at least 3 out of 7 days every week, I would NOT recommend this pack. There are many other brands with different designs that do not have this issue.
Used this Pack for the 1st time in the Unitas Mts of Utah last week. Worked amazing. Great fit and can pack a heavy load!! Waterproof bag help up nicely!!
Hiked 2 days with this on the AT with 27 pounds total weight and went 11.5 miles no problem - could have easily done 15 miles, but this was a shakedown trip for me. What I liked about it was the extra lumbar support, it was like have a comfy chair for my back. I almost didn't buy this because of all the hype about lighter backpacks, but REI didn't have the lighter one I was looking for and this one seemed to fit me great so I gave it a try. It's a couple pounds heavier, but I now have great confidence that this pack can carry the extra weight. comfortably.
Off the shelf and straight onto the trail within two hours - extremely well designed, zippers are solid but pull with coiled ease. Pocket distribution / design excellent. Load carries like a dream.
At 5 foot 9 inches i was on the edge of a s/m and a L/xl i went with the xl . Hip belt takes time to get used to but should be able to be dialed in. One of the three finger prongs that connects the straps broke and a Zipper on main busted / came off trac , pack holds a good bit , but could be a tight fit depending on user . I am a beginner and this was after an over nighter in the smokies near the at and a two night hike on the loyalsock trail over 30 miles
I'm coming from a 65L REI co-op bag from 2012, which has been a great bag in its own right and served me well for many years as a beginner backpacker. My main problem with the 65 is for 3-4 days out, it's almost too much room. I'll never be able to resist the temptation to fill the extra space with nonsense, so I wanted to drop down in size and force myself into more efficiency. Anyway, on to the Osprey. I've been using this bag for two years now and it's been terrific. It's very feature heavy and all of the smart little details have allowed me to pack smart every time out. I'm a water bottle guy, but I like having the option for a hydration pack should I decide to use one. It's taken a little troubleshooting to dial in the exact settings my own comfort, but now that it's locked in it feels like wearing nothing at all (nedflanders.gif). One major advantage to this bag is the ability to pack vertically. The main compartment allows for a lot of up and down room, which gives a lot of options to balance your weight perfectly. With most of my pack weight distributed upward instead of outward, it's really been better on my back. The top pouch is quite large and useful for your small odds and ends you don't want swimming around in your main compartment, and if your forecast doesn't call for rain you can ditch the rain fly and get even more space to collect trinkets like a friendly raven. The shoulder and waist straps are quite comfortable, although I'll concede the buckles for the waist feel a little cheap compared to the rest of the bag. Also, there is a LOT of extra strap at every adjustment point. Obviously that's good for accommodating all body sizes, but it's still a bit excessive when you're in the woods trailing more tassels than the Ultimate Warrior. All in all, it's a great pack at a solid price with very few smaller shortcomings. It's not the lightest thing in the world, but it's still decent and that added weight comes in the form of features you'll be happy to have. I can see having this for another 8-10 years until I buy whatever the next generation version happens to be.
i love this backpack. it feels super light and fitting to my form makes walks easy. made a nice choice in it.
I haven't even gotten to use this pack yet. I was in the process of adjusting the straps and.....don't make the mistake of fully extending the adjustable hip straps. When fully extended, they don't go back into the pack while the frame is in the pack. Guess what? Taking the frame out of the pack and putting it back in is an absolute nightmare. It's an hour endeavor getting it back into the pack properly. Prepare to swear at your backpack. Bonus, the fit in the frame pocket is so tight that the seam by the zipper ripped when rezipping! Would not buy again. Usually a big fan of Osprey but this pack has been a huge frustration and I haven't even taken it outside yet.
Bought this pack for weekend backpacking trips it is extremely comfortable, adjustable and versatile.
