I’ve owned two of these. The zipper on the first failed after about a year. REI replaced. Zipper on the second failed after about 5 years during an extended backpacking trip which then had to be cut short. It’s a great looking jacket; I’ve received many compliments over the years on mine. So it’s suitable for around town wear and probably looks snazzy on the ski slopes. BUT it has no business being in the backcountry. Arcteryx has offered $ to replace second jacket so I’ll get another one for town wear. But I’ll never take one of these backpacking ever again. The ‘AR’ should be replaced with the next letters of the alphabet.
This definitely has been a jacket that I have been keeping an eye on, its lightweight, durable, and can keep you dry during a downpour. This jacket is a little bit more on the pricey side but well worth it if your an avid hiker and want something to invest in for the long run. This jacket keeps the wind out very well making you stay warm during severe winds on the trail. This jacket runs a little on the bigger size so I recommend getting a size smaller unless you plan on wearing a lot of layers. I typically wear a size small at 150 pounds but it seems like it fits more of a medium frame. I wanted to test it as best as I could against rainy and dreary weather so I ended up putting the jacket on and had one of my buddies spray me with a hose full on for about a minute and tried the process three times! I definitely was encouraged by the results l, i remained dry even though I had the full force of a gardening hose on me, i was actually a bit surprised but very excited, it made me feel like the durability of the coat was good. Even the way arc'teryx designed the zippers to have it taped down was a very nice touch to make sure you stay dry no matter what. This jacket also has pit zippers to help cool you down of you start getting to warm. I can definitely see me using this jacket years out from now and never feeling like there could be something better out there. I really love the look and style of the jacket but more importantly the durability. I can't really say there are any cons to this but only time will tell, the only thing maby I could recommend would be putting an extra pocket inside the jacket and making then a little larger for maby something like a cell phone. I definitely recommend this jacket. Whose it for? Anyone who mountaineers, any advice hiker or backpacker who wants to stay extremely dry, and for anyone who are into winter sports. I could not highly recommend a jacket anymore then this one.
I loved this jackek while it lasted. It was solid, comfortable, just the right weight, and a perfect fit. But when the main zipper quite suddenly stopped working, Arc'teryx asked me to ship to for evaluation and claimed that it was out of warranty. At this price point, a jacket should, in my opinion, last more than three seasons of light city use. If I'd been in the middle of a winter mountain hike when the main zipper fell apart, I'd be in trouble.
I grew up knowing Arc'teryx as the "gold standard" of outerwear but learned the name has tarnished badly. I bout a Beta AR after Salomon bought out Arc'teryx. Fits great; falls apart. The seam tape on my Beta began delaminating throughout after using as a protective shell and rain jacket around the farm over the years. Since my jacket was purchased pre-2019, my warranty was still "lifetime". Since Anta Sports bought out Arc'teryx, the warranty has effectively been decapitated. (their warranty even states an effective date coinciding with the buyout) If you buy a jacket now, there is no substantive guarantee on repair or replacement. It is entirely their discretion. However, even my pre-2019 jacket cannot be repaired under the “lifetime” warranty since 2020 when their repair facility was shut down “because of COVID” (over 2 years ago!). My 15-year-old Columbia “beater” jacket, 5-year-old Montane puffer, and 3-year daily Montane fleece jackets have held up just fine in comparison. Do some digging on the Arc’teryx parent companies, their (not) warranty, and people's customer service experiences before you drop $$$ on one of these. Getting what I can from my exiting warranty. When that goes, I’m looking for a replacement from Patagonia or Montane (both lifetime guarantees).
After having this jacket less than a year, I regret buying it believing Arc'teryx stands behind their product. Just after a few months my jacket started wetting out. Recently, when doing more hiking in the rain, I stored my phone in the pocket only to find it swimming in a puddle of rain at the end of my hike. $600 jacket that doesn't protect your belongings from the rain. I contacted Arc'teryx only to have them tell me pockets are not waterproof but they should "hold out normal amounts of rain" WELL they didn't. Save your money and go with a cheaper brand because Arc'teryx doesn't stand behind its brand.
I have a Theta version (very similar to the Beta) but eventually the pitzip zippers delaminated, rendering the coat useless even though the Goretex material is fine. Unlike the main zipper, the pitzips are glued to the fabric, and came apart. Be advised Arcteryx doesn’t fix this, just offers a new coat at discount.
This jacket fits me well for active winter sports and keeps me dry. As others have mentioned this jacket began delaminating prematurely. I submitted a warranty claim and after 8 months of no response I contacted customer service and was told to submit another claim. For the high cost of this jacket I expect more. A LOT MORE.
I own a lightweight windbreaker/rain jacket that I purchased many years ago from REI for day hikes in the local hills and mountains and it works fine, but I was looking for something more durable that could stand up to heavier rain/wind while still being lightweight. After looking at several jackets, I selected the Arc'teryx Beta AR Jacket, and I'm so glad that I did. This jacket is fantastic! The three layers of Gortex Pro provide outstanding weather protection (I've already hiked in strong winds and rain), yet the jacket is remarkably lightweight and comfortable. While Arc'teryx products tend to be expensive, I would spend the money again because this jacket is worth it! The jacket will be with me when I hike the Camino de Santiago this spring. Buen Camino!
It was a difficult moment deciding to buy this jacket at the high price and I felt uneasy about it for days. A rain shell at 600. However, I’m glad I did now and here’s my thoughts on why. 1 - super well made. This isn’t going to get ripped easily like some of the lightweight options and thus is going to last a long time (I’m almost positive). The sleeves are long and I thought that was odd when I tried it on - but I realize now it’s designed that way as they expect you to Velcro fit the sleeves to your wrist size (ish) making for a perfect fit and the crumpling above looks good. It’s a very stylish jacket actually. 2. Pockets are big and in just the right height - they aren’t lined but they keep your hands totally wind protected and warm. Add gloves and you’re set. The inside pocket fits an iPhone pro 13 Max perfectly -without a struggle (for size ref). So any phone will fit. 3. Material is very nice. Feels like fabric to touch. I don’t find this jacket noisy. Yes it’s got a bit of a crinkle to it when you hold it brand new but once on I was not bothered by noise and it definitely softens up (in a good way). It’s utterly impregnable to water. If you have this on you’re not getting wet up top. 4. It is warm but not as much of a sweat lodge as the reviews led me to believe. I’m currently wearing it in Wales, UK, and it’s 50F (about 10c), often windy and wet, and I have not found it sweaty or been overheating during hikes - even on good days. I am layering it with a tshirt, a wool crew sweater, an arcteryx proton jacket (with hood) - by all accounts I should be boiling - but I’m not. I’m warm. If I want to cool simply unzip the front or the arm vents a bit. Remove a layer etc. I realize other people may exert themselves more than me or run hotter/cooler - but it is def not a toaster and has lots of means to adjust. 5. The collar is great. When wind is blasting in your face it’s great to be able to zip that up and hide behind it. 6. The hood is fantastic and has great adjustments to cling to your head well so it’s not blowing around. The fact that it fits a bike helmet is fantastic. But with just your head it’s still great. My verdict is that this jacket is ideal for northern climates. Obviously it’s not great for trekking a rainy day in California or Mexico (Although I did wear it in Idyllwild CA in October and was fine on a 2 hr hike) - this jacket is for rainy cold days with a bit of bite. I’d rather have more protection that I can step down with layers than something more flimsy. Paired with some waterproof pants and boots you are totally sorted. Size wise I got a large because I like a more casual fit - I’m 5’11, 170 - fairly regular - medium fit me but the large has more versatility. A great city jacket also! Very stylish in the darker colors. I’m not a rock climber or pro adventurer. Day hikes and a few hour long walks with the dog. I love this jacket and I’d recommend it to anyone for wet weather in temps below/around 60f.
This jacket is definitely an upgrade from my previous rain shell. This jacket has a more solid feel to it and seems more durable. This jacket was well designed with a heavy duty main zipper and welded zipper pockets. Minor details such as the zipper pulls are nice as well. I'm 5'9 and about 175 lbs. and ordered a size large. The arms are a little long but I definitely have room for base layers such as a down vest/jacket. I can't wait for the winter season to come so I can truly enjoy all the benefits of this jacket. I would highly recommend this jacket to any avid outdoor enthusiast.
