Sizing Notes
Measurements are stated in inches unless otherwise indicated. Size chart values represent body measurements, not garment measurements.
SHORT: Some pants are available in short sizes, which generally means an inseam that is 2.5 inches shorter than regular sizes.
TALL: Some pants, shirts, jackets and parkas are available in tall sizes, which generally means an inseam that is 3 inches longer and a rise that is 1 inch longer, a shirt or jacket body that is 2 inches longer, a parka body that is 2.5 inches longer and sleeves that are 2.5 inches longer than regular sizes.
Capri or cropped pants have an intentionally shorter inseam—reference the technical specs instead of this chart.
Inseam is measured to the floor.

Soft, light and warm. Sometimes too warm.
This jacket is really sweet. I have it in the orange/redish color. So nice. It's also super warm. With a high exertion activity with the weather in the teens, I get a little hot with a mid-weight base-layer. So I stick to light weight (150 smartwool, icebreaker, etc). If it's warmer (20's and 30's), I just wear a synthetic workout shirt. When it's in the 40's, this jacket is too hot. I also run warm. Material is really soft, and it's light. The only draw back is that it doesn't have any venting, core or pit zips. I've been trying to find a jacket exactly like this with pit-zips or core venting and no luck yet. So for now, I'm sticking with this jacket.
Great jacket, great value! Very comfy.
I was in the market for an insulated but breatheable jacket. I was looking at other brands such as Patagonia, Arcteryx, etc. and I am so glad that I found the REI-Coop version of what I was looking for. This jacket is crazy comfortable! I actually think I like it more than some of my other name-brand jackets. This jacket really is wind and water proof. I have yet to take it on a hike but I am looking forward to using it as that's the primary reason I purchased it. So far this jacket excels well in 35-45 degrees with only a t-shirt underneath. I wore This jacket also works well in 25-35 degrees with a long sleeve underneath. I am so glad that I purchased this jacket. I 100% recommend it!
Go-to jacket!
Got this jacket today and immediately started putting it through it's paces in the Oregon downpour. An hour in and I can tell this is going to be my go-to jacket for most days from November and March. Wore it out in 48 degree rain with nothing but a t-shirt underneath and was almost too warm (which is a good thing, because I'm treating this as a winter jacket). The waterproofing held up. After an hour in the rain I was still dry as a bone inside the jacket. The hood is generously sized, which is good or bad depending what you like. I sort of prefer a scuba hood style, but was able to cinch this one down with the three adjustments it offers. Overall I'm super duper pleased with with jacket. Bravo REI!
From a hikers perspective...
I definitely loved the fit and look of this jacket; hands down is a beautiful piece to add to your arsenal! However, looks and feel are only a small part of the equation when shopping for hiking gear. Having said that, the REI Heliovale Insulated Jacket 2.0 failed to meet my particular requirements for hiking. The lack of pitzips definitely was a bit concerning upon purchase, but as where I was more basing my decision on a summit/camp layer, I decided that the lack of said zips could be set aside overall as long as thr jacket performed its other functions properly. It is (to the best of my knowledge) 100% waterproof as where I have tested it for 3 to 4 hours in cold and heavy November rain (please dont sue me Guns N Roses) and definitely did not get wet! This jacket gets an A+ there! I was definitely impressed! Having said that, it did take HOURS for the outerlayer to shed its moisture and I believe eventually that it sort of permeated throughout the layers, causing my midlayer to get damp. This isnt necessarily a good thing in cold winter climates, thats for sure! As far as warmth...i wouldn't rate this jacket as being able to comfortably be out in much colder then 40°F unless you are MOVING! Works well going uphill, but overheating might become an issue as with the lack of pitzips and dual layering system. It does ok in slight wind, but this is where it lost me. It did little to block out the winds and cold up on the summits for me. All in all, this was one of the main reasons I bought the jacket, so for it to not be what I needed it to be was sort of a bummer. I reluctantly returned mine. If it was based solely on looks or a good overall winter jacket that wasnt for uphill, then this is an awesome jacket! Yet, for the slightly more discriminating mountaineer/hiker...this might not be the jacket for you.
Great Jacket
Love this jacket. Wear it every day. Just the right amount of insulation for Western Washington winters. I wear this jacket to work, to walk the dogs, to the archery range on the weekends, on day hikes, the beach, & fly fishing. Rain & rain stay out. The good is perfect. I can adjust it to fit over a ball cap or snug it up over a stocking hat & it stays out of my eyes and doesn’t block the peripheral vision. The chest pocket fits my phone perfect. My daypack belt sits just below the hand pockets which allows easy access to them. The sleeves have just the right amount of cuff and the Velcro closure works great for me. I’m 5’7” 185 lbs with fairly large arms & shoulders. The size large fits perfect. There is enough room to layer a fleece and down vest under it but sits close enough to my body that it isn’t bulky.
This thing is awesome!
I'm 5'8" and 200lbs, and I bought a large. It fits perfectly! I've been out in heavy rain and cold (low 40's), t-shirt under it only, and was dry and warm, but not too warm which was nice. This jacket is very comfortable. I had doubts but those were quickly dissolved after use. It's my favorite jacket for everything! Super light weight too. We will see how the "water proof" coating/material holds up.
Lightweight and good quality, but..
I like this Jacket, it’s warm for the for it’s weight and comfortable however it’s a bit long in the sleeves. Also the neck area is a bit loose. I haven’t had a chance to give it a try in a good rain but water rolls off just fine. I think it would be fine in a lighter rain.
Warm and light
Bought two of these Heliovale jackets, one for myself and one for my wife. We’ve worn them the whole winter in the Catskills, and have been very pleased with their performance. The Heliovale jacket is really nice and lightweight, and allows for a wide range of movement and doesn’t feel bulky at all. Have worn it with different layers underneath, and have felt warm and comfortable down to single digits Fahrenheit. The wind/waterproof outer layer is really key. Have worn it while cross-country skiing, and have stayed comfortable even in windy mountain conditions. The one thing I wish it offered are zippered vents to improve breathability. I actually got pretty warm while cross-country skiing in this jacket, and would have loved to open a vent or two. For a single garment, this jacket was one of the best purchases I’ve made in a long time. Also— a nice side benefit is that the orange color is bright enough to stand-in for a blaze orange over-layer during hunting season!
On the cusp between technical & casual
Well-designed jacket from REI with a soft (but durable) external shell material + DWR coating that keeps you warm through many different activities and weather conditions. I'm 6-feet tall and 190 lbs (so not quite dad bod, but not competitive athlete material) and the fit is generous throughout the body but the arms are actually long enough to keep the wrist and bottom third of my hand covered (even while lifting or swinging an ice axes.) The drawcord closure at the bottom hem is important as the jacket is roomy through the body, meaning it's a great jacket for layering underneath. Two side zip handwarmer pockets + one zippered external chest pocket. Fantastic hood with multiple drawcord adjustments to get a good fit. Stiff flap behind the coated YKK zipper keeps elements out and makes for a great standup collar.
Nice but not "Waterproof"
I have always felt REI brand is great for the price. Just received the jacket. It fits well, seems well built. I had bought it for cool weather mountain biking. I had put in the search criteria for a "waterproof" jacket. Upon inspection, I couldn't imagine the shell was waterproof. When I went back to the product description it states that the seams and zippers are "waterproof", but the shell "will shed light rain". Oh well. I still think it will serve the purpose I bought it for. Size XL.
