OK light
I have this and the 620 version, and cannot tell a difference in brightness. Would recommend this over the 620 as it is shorter in length. Pros: - Bright - Many useful light modes - Compact - Nice Flashlight Cons: - Awkward handlebar mount with one screw seems flimsy but has held without issue - Would not recommend for 26mm bars as the circumference is too small for the strap to be secured tightly - Rubber usb cap does not stay secured
Bright, functional light, short battery life
It attaches securely and stays put, but is also easy to take off. The light is really bright and I can tell that drivers and other road users notice me. My biggest complaint is the very short battery life. In addition, when the battery is running low, the light becomes nonfunctional. It starts flashing erratically, then will turn off after a few minutes. Overall, I think this is a good light for the price point if you can plan your cycling around its charge.
Just doesn’t last
I’ve had this light just since August and it already isn’t working. Keeps shutting off like it doesn’t have a charge, but I fully charge it and it’s bright every time I click it back on. Stays on 2 more minutes and shuts off again. Not getting this brand again.
Needs Modifications
I like the light and all of the different settings and levels of brightness but the plastic piece that is screwed on the bottom keeps coming loose. It looks like it'll break at any moment which kinda irritates me. I got home from a ride today and went to take my lights off my bicycle and saw that my front light was nowhere to be found. After hopping in my car and backtracking a few miles I was lucky enough to find it in the middle of the street. The previous Cygolite that I had was one solid piece, including the rubber strap and clip that tightens it down. Not this light. Other than that it works great.
Blind Drivers, Pedestrians and other Cyclists
A guy with one of these blinking in daytime mode in daylight was 5 blocks away and I had to put my hand up to block his oncoming beam. These lights are excessively bright and counterproductive to others safety and potentially the user themselves. I’ve stopped driving at night because of obscenely bright bike and auto lights.
its not perfect but im giving it 5 stars anyways.
I've had this light for 5 or 6 years now and I use it 3-4 times per week. The pulse (to be seen in daytime) is the most attention grabbing light pattern i've ever seen on a light this size. I do a lot of road miles each week in Los Angeles, and while some people say they wont ride without a rear light, I personally think the front light is the essential life saver. Your risk of a major injury comes from people you're moving towards not people coming up behind you. Left turners, U turners, parking lot exiters, getting doored. When traveling at 20mph with just a helmet, It's essential to be visible to what you are moving towards at high speeds. This light hits a very nice sweet spot of weight, size and brightness. If I were riding nights for long periods (which I sometimes do) I bring larger wattage niterider. But they are bulky and heavy and lack the attention grabbing daylight blink modes that really make you seen. The little cygolite looks much nicer underslung on a set of road bars. And for rides that start in darkness for 45 minutes before sunrise, I find it offers plenty of night time illumination. It just isn't a light I consider for the purpose of long night rides. The bad: Shortly after purchasing this light charging it became more difficult. Its weakest link is the old mini usb port. Ive found that if you use the handlebar strap and run the cable through one of its holes to create a bit of continuous downward pressure on the usb plug, it will engage properly and charge. Ive heard others have similar issues. When this happened, I figured I would just use a few more rides until it died completely, but 5 years later it still runs perfect, so this strap hack has been a daily routine. Shame about the port, but it's been worth it. It just requires a little tinkering. And given that mine is now 5 years old, im betting they've fixed this issue. Hopefully not using mini usb anymore? I came here to look at purchasing another one for y girlfriend. I was curious if they still even make them. Im happy to see they do.
Worth it!
I tend to ride in the morning before the sun is up and then finish after its plenty bright. This light provides plenty of light when dark at a good distance without blinding drivers and when it’s bright out the daylight mode is effective. It’s actually bright enough in daylight that when I’ve ran the high daylight mode drivers have pulled over thinking that i’m a police officer. It holds securely to the bars and is very light and compact. Cover on charging port falls off easy but overall a good buy.
Good but not enough time.
Good bright light, good choices of full or flash or both. Easy on/off the handlebar, charger works well. HOWEVER, I have to charge it every second day. If I try to get 3 days out of it, it turns off halfway through my ride. I need it on Full for one hour, and then on Flash for a second hour - that's the duration of my AM ride each day. So I am disappointed in the fact that it will not give me a 3rd "day". Perhaps I should have spent the big money for a better light.
Lightweight and bright
This light is a great compact design, and I like the daytime running lights (the four lights across the top) feature. The light didn't work for me for two reasons: it didn't fit on the Ortlieb mount I intended to use, underneath my handlebar bag, and the USB cover would not stay in place, which is not optimal for riding in rain.
520 is just right for my riding
Excellent light with a good assortment of functions. If you're looking for something to illuminate a night trail though I'd shop for something else with more ILLUM.
