No Chamois No Problem - WTB Volt-like
Being in the minority of those who ride without a chamois, it's hard to find a nice seat that's well padded whereas an additional pad in your shorts in not needed. I was a longtime WTB Volt fan, but I moved to an area where the climbs are 4x longer than I was used to. I was experiencing numbness and wanted to give a seat with a relief channel a shot. I tried a Bontrager Verse Short Comp and then a Fizik Terra Aidon X5, but the Ergon SMC has been the best match for me. I feel the shape and padding is fairly similar to that of my beloved Volt and the relief channel has eliminated the numbness that I was experiencing on long climbs.
Makes $90 worth it
I've become a firm believer that whatever your body touches shouldn't be skimped on. At first, $90 for a saddle sounds expensive, but after a month on this seat, I'm convinced the purchase was well worth it. It's comfy, while not looking overly plump. The tailbone hole helps with ventilation, and the saddle just looks very sleek overall.
Worth the extra weight in exchange for the comfort
Pros: - Very comfortable - Quality build and materials Cons: - Heavier steel metal (100+ grams more than my WTB Volt saddle) - There is no protection to the rear edge of the saddle. It would benefit the durability of the saddle if you flip the bike upside down to work on it for whatever reason. Summary: It also comes with built-in design to integrate the Topeak Sidekick Wedge Pack with F25 Fixer bag where you can clip it underneath the saddle. I have used it through half a dozen rides (2+ hours per ride) and really feel comfortable riding on the saddle. It's slightly heavier than I preferred but it is not a deal breaker for the benefit of comfort.
I Wish I Hadn't Waited So Long to Buy this Saddle
Saddle's are a highly subjective fit and preference - What works great for one person in terms of comfort and performance is another person's misery.....err, torture device if you're really putting in the miles. And, when you find "the one saddle," you'll never go back to other options and buy several more just in case.....that's my experience with this saddle. I purchased this saddle a few months ago to replace the stock WTB Sport Saddle on my fat bike and it's been a night versus day difference ever since in terms of comfort and performance. For years I've read good things about Ergon but never really thought it would make as much of a difference comfort wise, at least not leaps better than most other saddles I've tried on my road and mountain bikes that seemed similar enough in terms of materials, size, shape, etc. (e.g., Selle Italia, WTB) - I was wrong. In my case, this saddle, even full price, is worth every penny: it's made both short (e.g., 1 to 2 hours) and long rides (e.g., 4+ hours) in the saddle on paved, dirt, and snow covered trails so much more enjoyable and pain free, more so than any saddle I've ever owned or tried and I've tried many over the years. It's not the lightest, it's not aero, it's not narrow or flashy if that's your thing, but it is very, very comfortable and I've been pain/numbness free for the first time in years since using this saddle, even when riding severals days per week for several hours each trip. For reference, for the majority of my rides, I wear a standard Zoic chamois, and, occasionally, for longer rides, the Zoic premium chamois which has slightly better padding for extra comfort on day-long and multi-day rides/bikepacking. If this saddle works for your sit bone size/shape, you won't regret it. Durability wise, I've logged over 300 miles so far on this saddle with no signs of any wear or issues so far.
Best seat
Great seat. Perfect design for my sit bones. Absolutley love the gel squish. I would absolutley recommend this seat!
No more pain
I never write reviews, but this saddle is a game changer for me. I'm a 65-year-old male and over the past 4 years have biked regularly for 3 hours 3 to 4 times/week. The only problem was sit-bone pain which I assumed for too long was just a matter of building up tolerance. But after 3 years the sit-bone pain worsened to the point it was forcing shorter rides and longer recovery between rides. And the pain really never went away completely. Finally bought this saddle about 3 weeks ago, installed it, and the pain truthfully disappeared within a couple of rides. I can ride 4 to 5 times a week now for 3 hours at a time with no sit-bone pain and no recovery time (at least not for the sit-bone pain). I could probably go longer now. I just wish I'd bought this years ago. I am right at the 12 cm measurement between bones so went with the larger M/L size as recommended. Thought it would look bigger than my stock saddle, but there's not that much of a difference in look or weight.
Took a chance on the reviews and saddle!
I bought this saddle based on these very reviews. I needed something for a 71 mile ride the next day. My second Brooks Cambium C15 proved to be as uncomfortable as the C17 at about 17 miles into a ride. So crazy as it sounds I bought this saddle with no ride experience what so ever planning and hoping for comfort on a 71 miler. The next day I set out for my ride. 15 miles in I started to get worried, was it me or my saddle that made the Brooks so uncomfortable. Well after 71 miles and almost 6hrs 15mins. With one break at my turn around this has been the best saddle I’ve ever owned. I got some normal discomfort the was easily fixed by just a short lift off and then right back on. No pain, just miles of enjoyable riding. So glad I took a chance on this saddle, and the reviews! You might be happy too.
A 'real' bike saddle that is comfortable
I have always shied away from comfort models of saddles because that typically translates to thick, heavy padding and a wide, blunt shape that might feel cushy when you first climb on but which gets very unpleasant if you ride for more than 30 minutes at a time. The Ergon SMC is definitely NOT one of those chunky cruiser comfort seats. Place this side by side with a standard saddle, and you'll be hard pressed to spot the differences. Go for a ride on it, though, and you'll notice immediately. I started cycling in the late 80s, raced during the 90s, and have continued to ride just for fun ever since. This is the only saddle I've ever used that is comfortable not only when you first hop on but also when you hop off 3 hours later. Narrow enough not to chafe. Wide enough to support your sit bones. Enough relief in the center to cut down on nerve tingles. I bought this originally to use on my road/commuter bike but have since bought a second one for my mountain bike. Will this saddle make your bike as comfortable as a couch? Of course not. Will it make you climb like you weigh 120 pounds and descend like you have no awareness of your own mortality? Definitely not. Will it make long rides more enjoyable? Definitely.
Ergon saddle
Comfortable and strong for my mountain bike seat. Relieves pressure on my center and allows for great leg power. I actually exchanged for the S/M size. My sit bone width measurement was 11.5 cm, on the fence between M-L. REI was great allowing me to return my .com order in store for exchange to a smaller size.
Game changer
I have trouble with bike saddles. After a long flats or climbs I usually get numbness. Bought this in M/L and haven't had a single issue on my MTB. Of course you should measure your own sitz bones, but for me it hits the bones and supports my weight. The result is no numbness because it keeps the softer parts off the seat.
