Works with Rhino Rack Reconn bars
I have Rhino Rack Reconn bars on my Jeep Wrangler. I was able to install these Thule ski holders with no extra parts needed. The Tule T-bolts work perfectly in the Reconn bars. After looking at Yakima, I learned that Yakima need over $100 of extra parts to make them work. These Thule bars are also easy to install and remove with NO tools! Which is great, because they will come off for summer time. Very pleased with these. They also come with two lengths of bolts and height risers, which should be used if there are clearance issues when snowbards are upside down.
No main lock cylinder or key to lock
No where does this say I needed to separately purchase a Lock Cylinder & Key. At this time I’m not able to lock down and secure my boards… Always expected these to come with the (2) Keys for 4) Lock Cylinders on the mounting portion, (2) Keys for (2) Lock Cylinders for securing the boards or skis. For a hefty $350+ product this should automatically come with them. Also, the Local REI store doesn’t care the correct Lock Cylinders or Keys for this product. Lol. How in efficient. The pictures are misleading. The very first picture shows a Lock Cylinder in the rack already.
Poor product with flimsy parts
Bolt came straight through the mounting when tightening down. Flimsy product with cheap parts. REI will not help replace or return the product.
Not worth the price. breaks easily
Very disappointed with this product. we opened the box and started assembly when one piece broke instantly. this is equipment that should be able to sustain outdoor elements and driving on the freeway carrying heavy ski equipment. it should not break easily. tried to exchange at REI and they were no help. beyond disappointed with the service.
Perfect for winter season
I put this on my acura ilx with the thule square bar and it works great. Depending on your roof rack bar will depend on how easy it is to assemble. The instruction manual could be better labeled because they show you how to install this on all the different bars thule sells (square bar or aero blade) but there is no label saying "installation for square bar" or "installation for aero blade". Just a bunch of numbers and images. Other than that, this works great! I was a bit hesitant to put in 4 snowboards since the rubber part bunches, but I think it's supposed to do that.. I've driven with 4 snowboards with this from los angeles to mt high and los angeles to mammoth and no problems have occurred so far, and hopefully not problems in the future!
T bar bolts too short for Wingbar Evo
I have only used this once with 3 skis and it worked great. The issue is that the T bar bolts are not long enough to fit in the Snow Pack L. I assume this is also going to be an issue with other accessories so I have emailed Thule to ask. In the meantime I only gave it 3 stars because it is not working as expected. If you are looking to use the straps then thats fine but I bought this combination to specifically use the T bar bolts. I've attached pictures showing the short thread with and without the snow pack attached.
Good product horrible instructions
The instructions are awful. Not intuitive or easy to follow at all. There are pictures that didn’t make sense and a bunch of extra pieces that we didn’t realize we didn’t need. Took us much longer to figure out how to assemble as a result. Thule / REI need to do a better job providing install instructions or maybe a video would be nice!?!?
Second time around this time with the larger model
Bought the Snowpack large to replace our Snowpack medium which was stolen along with our car earlier this year...long story. This rack works flawlessly. The T-Bar mounting is super easy and VERY clean looking. The release mechanism is large and works in sub zero temps. Skis are held securely and are easy to load provided you're tall enough to reach more than just the edge of your car roof.
Good rack. Atrocious installation instructions.
Rack feels solid mounted to factory crossbars on Subaru. However, I’m a really handy guy and found the install instructions to be probably the worst I’ve ever seen. Considering the application for this product is keeping thousands of dollars of skis fixed to a roof instead of an airborne projectile as you hurtle down the highway at 75mph, Thule should be able to write a decent manual.
Doesn't accommodate inverted skis/boards
Though the description here suggests that you can extend the height of this rack to accommodate inverted snowboards and skis bindings this is not actually the case for most vehicles. The extension feet do not work with the "speed link" crossbar attachments, and the overall capacity is therefore half of that which is advertised. But yeah otherwise it's a great rack.
