Great product, be patient the first time setting it up. 1. Fill the bags completely, overflowing 2. Pull the bags outward at each corner until the shade is completely flat, with few if any wrinkles left (not stretched tight) 3. Now place a pole under each corner, start with the side that faces the wind (if applicable) You’ll master this by the second use.

Nice concept, complete failure.

We purchased this for a beach for our vacation on the coast of NC. Set up is a breeze, however it doesn’t seem to like any access breeze. Once the beach winds start kicking in this thing started flopping and swaying so much the poles would just give out and fall. We read reviews before we left that an extra set of poles gives it the support it needs. While the extra poles helped, they would still fall. By the end of the week after much trial and error I could get it to stand without falling, but was always worried it would still fall due to the excessive flopping. The instability wasn’t the only issue. We got fried under this thing. The material is a very stretchy fabric that needs to be pulled taught to give it rigidity and tension for the poles. That stretchiness is partly the reason this thing flops and moves so much in the wind. When pulled tight it’s almost like panty hose or Lycra. There is shade, but a lot of sun gets through so I don’t think 50 SPF is accurate and I have a lot of redness to show for it. We had family using a competitor’s shade right next to ours and their shade was definitely better, which had a lower rated SPF. Lastly, by the week’s end it was faded from six days of use, had frayed stitching, and was marred up from the black pole tips as they rubbed and moved with the wind. We got the lemon color and it was a rich yellow but ended the week as a diluted lemonade color on the sun facing side. We wanted to like this and should have heeded the other reviewers warnings. If you choose to purchase this know that if you’re going to use this on a beach for 8+ hours for several days it will fade. If you use it in high wind, it will fall and fray. It will also hold sand that seems to not shake off because of the Lycra material. The bag interior divider will tear. If you’re still considering this after my warnings be sure to get an extra set of poles. Lay the shade out flat facing the wind. Dig a hole that is flat on the side facing the shade and drop the two wind sided support bags into those two holes. Then place a pole on each side and the crisscross the second set of poles at the black heads next to each other with both angled towards the wind. You’ll know you’ve done it right when the support lines and the two crisscrossed pole look like a triangle teepee shape. Lastly, for good measure pull the back side support bags back away from shade to make it even more taught.

Great idea, poor quality

I was impressed with the Neso after being under one at the beach last month. After buying this one, we noticed the quality issues by day two: 1) one of our poles bent permanently when the wind picked up 2) the bag lining divider immediately ripped when stuffing the tent back into the bag 3) the carrying strap for the bag ripped off the bag when carrying it to the beach I can’t recommend this canopy with so many defects after just a couple days of use.

Save your time and money, get a Shivumie

This was the absolute most disappointing product I’ve ever purchased from REI. IT HAS ABSOLUTELY NO BUSINESS BEING MARKETED AS A BEACH SHADE. A beach shade should be able to accommodate normal beach breeze. On a normal NC beach day this thing flung around and would not stay put. It was clearly out of place on the beach. I tried all the tricks, burry the bags of sand, wet them down, nothing worked. Someone else even came over while I was struggling to set mine up and told me to just leave it alone, he tried his that morning and couldn’t get it to stand up. Thank goodness for REI return policy. This thing is a piece of trash.

Cautiously optimistic

So far we’ve used this shade 4 times and it is awesome. The 2 extra poles were absolutely worth it. The stitching around the edge has pulled a little after the first use, but it appears cosmetic and not functional. We are at the beach almost every weekend for most of the year and are hoping that this will last us a few years. It is super easy to set up once you get the hang of it. We’ve been digging a hole in the sand for each of the guy-wires(?) and burying the sand bags full of sand and it works amazingly on windy days. It packs small for the amount of shade it offers too. The bag strap to seam has already ripped apart sadly, but I will just repair that myself rather than create more waste.

Broke after 3 uses

We visit the Outerbanks every year and spend all day on the beach. We used this canopy twice and then it broke on the third use. The Ball on the end of the pole ripped and then the pole pierced a hole through the fabric. On days when there is only a very light or non-existent wind, it worked great. However with a more sustained moderate or even light wind, the product did not work well at all as it acted more of a Windsail. I Loved that the canopy was portable and lightweight as we have traditionally used pop-ups on the beach. I think these issues may have been avoidable if the product came with four poles instead of two, can't confirm since ours broke before we could order two additional poles.

Seemed great for two days

We were so excited to use this on our beach trip this year. After watching a few of the Neso videos and reading reviews we successfully put it up rather quickly. Worked great for two days. Then, day 3 we got it up and with winds that weren’t that strong, a pile just broke? Like in the middle of the pole? So then a friendly neighbor with a Neso loaned us a pole for the day. 30min later another pole broke?!! (We we’re using 4 poles) so now we have had no shade for the last three days since it doesn’t work terribly well with two poles in the wind. A big disappointment for this price point.

SOOO much space for the whole family

My wife saw one of these on the beach and really wanted one. We live in a beach town so it was the perfect Christmas gift. I got her the extra set of poles too. We got to break it out for Spring Break this week with the kids. I watched a bunch of videos before heading out and I am so glad I did. The setup was pretty easy, the kids even helped. There was a comment to overfill the bags with sand and we did just that and got a good amount of tension going too. It was a windy day and we had ZERO problems! This tent was big enough for my family of 4 and our friends who are a family of 3. I am 6 ft tall and had plenty of head space. I was pleasantly surprised with the whole experience of our Neso Tent

This has been a GAME CHANGER for our beach trips!

I don't leave reviews unless I am beyond thrilled or disappointed- This has been a fantastic purchase for our family! Super lightweight to take down to the beach considering the amount of shade it casts. My kids help set up, takes less than five minutes. It took a couple times trying and a call into the Neso Customer Service department for help- They were extremely helpful and emphasized really packing the bags full and stretching it out before you set the poles up. It is good to have an extra set of poles on hand just in case the wind is changing directions. We have traveled with this as a carry on with no issues, several friends and family now have Neso Tents. So stoked we saw someone on the beach with a Neso tent to inspire us!

I really wanted to like it.

I really wanted to like it. I am a Scoutmaster in Eastern Washington. At least once a month I am in a place where it would be nice to have a sun shade occasionally a wind and rain shelter is also nice. I first set this up in my yard. I think the poles are great. Sitting in the grass is OK and if I am in a low chair there is headroom. Not much room for standing, space for a table but that was OK. The real thing that bothered me is when in the hot sun after several hours the elastic in the shade stretched out and started sagging then the shade would collapse. Leaving it up for more then a few hours always resulted in the same issues. So for a quick run to the beach laying on a towel this is great. On a lawn with stakes for a ball game you will still be good as long as there is no wind. But for more then a few hours, anything but the slightest breeze or over a picnic table this is not a good option.
