Sizing Notes
Measurements are stated in inches unless otherwise indicated. Size chart values represent body measurements, not garment measurements. Some women's pants are available in petite and tall sizes. Typically petite sizes fit women 4'11" to 5'3". Regular sizes fit women 5'4" to 5'8". Tall sizes fit women 5'9" to 5'11".
PETITE: Generally, as compared to regular sizes, petite sizes are 2.5 inches shorter in inseam, 1 inch shorter in body length, 1.25 inches shorter in sleeve length and Âľ inch shorter in total rise.
TALL: tall sizes are 3 inches longer in inseam, 2 inches longer in body length, 2.5 inches longer in sleeve length and 1.25 inches longer in total rise.
Capri or cropped pants have an intentionally shorter inseam—reference the technical specs instead of this chart.
Inseam is measured to the floor.

Really comfy for hiking
Took these on an 8 mile hike today and they're perfect! Really comfy, soft waistband, stretchy, I think I'll be wearing these around the house and yard all summer too. I'm usually M or L in shorts and M was the correct fit for these, L would have been too baggy. I caution that those with bigger hips might find these too small because the waist stitching isn't very stretchy as you pull it over your butt. (I'm more apple shaped and had to shimmy a bit, but once they're on no issues). Minus 1 star because they're sliiightly frumpy with the waist pleating in front. Nothing I'm embarrassed to wear but also not my cutest shorts. They're comfy enough that I don't mind.
Comfortable, but not good on trail
I wanted to love these shorts so bad. I like the cut and fit and the pockets are surprisingly decent for a pair of women's shorts. I wore them on a three day hike with lots of elevation gain and by the end of the first day I was starting to get some chafe on the inside of my thighs. By the second day I was in pretty rough shape and considering hiking out in only my underwear. The seams are not flat stitched and will rub back and forth in the inseam area as you hike. I made it work on the last day by duct taping over the offending seams, but that was only good enough to get me out. So, if you're looking to buy these for around town use, they're probably great. If you are hoping to use them for serious hiking I suggest you keep on looking.
Go to casual shorts - hiking, biking, lounging
I love the material they use for these shorts, they are very soft, comfortable, and flexible. The front pockets are deep and can easily fit my phone without looking bulky. I also love the zipper back pocket! They also accommodate my generous booty better than most shorts, which is a big plus. My only "complaint" is that they are a bit larger and longer than the picture makes them look. I'm 5'6" 145lbs and size medium is big on me. They only come about 5" above my knee, which is a bit long for me, so they lose some style points (or 1 star).
Super lightweight comfy shorts
These shorts are super lightweight and comfy! Since it's still not quite summer yet and I'm in Colorado, I haven't gotten much use out and about in them, but did climb outside in them on one of the random 70 degree winter days and they were great! Super comfy on the approach and my harness fit just fine over them. I don't know that they'll be my go-to climbing shorts, but they definitely worked. I look forward to backpacking season as they're so lightweight and airy, but sturdy! My only complaint about the shorts is that they run a little big. I'm 5'8 and 155 pounds and I wear large in pretty much everything, but these feel way too big. I'm not out to impress anyone when I'm adventuring, but the large size makes them feel extra unflattering to me. I still look forward really to putting them to use this summer though! Overall I still recommend these shorts, but my style is generally a little more form fitting.
Get em
I bought the black shorts in summer 2020 and just bought the sage (summer 2021) because I love them so much. The fit is perfect. I have thicker thighs and a smaller waist so shorts can be a challenge. High waisted, not too short or too long, not too baggy or too tight. I bought them primarily for hiking but I wear them all the time. I will say though, the sage shorts are a little thinner than the black. I don't know that's intentional or if they changed the design a year later. They're not too thin, I'm keeping them, but I'd say go with the black if you're looking for something with a little weight to them. Also the black are more of a slate grey.
Comfortable
I am not a person who wears shorts. However, as a lover of the outdoors in the summer I usually have to forego a day activity, suffer in pants, or try shorts I usually despise. This year, I decided to try shorts (again!) and started with these. I usually wear a M and ordered a M, and they fit well. I surprisingly really loved them! They're stretchy, soft, lightweight, and breathable. The inseam is also really long without making the shorts too long. I still would prefer pants, but these shorts have been awesome for backpacking this summer! I will say one side at a time will creep up, but the other somehow stays put so my legs aren't touching still.
Run Large
These shorts run very large and they are rather frumpy looking, in my opinion. I am 5”2” 103lbs and I swim in the XS. The leg openings are very wide. I could probably take in at least a half inch on either side and the would look better. However, my husband thought they made my behind look good so they can’t be all bad :) The drawstring helps keep them up. Some other things that I should share...the “pirate black” is more of a charcoal grey, they are quite “swishy” sounding as I call it and after the first washing the waistband doesn’t lie flat on the top (it’s as though the top row of elastic rolled). None of this is a big enough deal for what I’ll be wearing them for (walks, cleaning or just being at home) so I will keep them...but I don’t really feel all that great in them.
Perfect hiking shorts
These shorts are made of light breathable material, the elastic waistband is lined with a very comfortable material inside, the drawstring does not stretch and I kinda wish it did, and the pockets are pretty big and comfy to sit on. These are the only REI hiking shorts I've tried that don't seem too long in the leg. The torso is just barely long enough for me at 5'10" and 135 lbs., I was able to wear these high-waisted in order to protect against chafing from my fully loaded pack. A size Small fit perfect because these have a fully elastic waistband, though I normally wear a medium in other brands. Others have complained about the durability of the fabric but I don't agree at all, I glissaded while wearing these plus leggings and couldn't find any distress to the fabric afterwards.
BETTER THAN BAGGIES
I bought Patagonia baggies was few weeks back and quickly realized how unforgiving the fabric and waistline was. As a woman with curves, this was disappointing. I considered getting yet another size up to compensate but remembered how well REI brand clothing fit true to size. I ordered these instead and am much happier with the fit. They are comparable in style but better in there sizing and comfort!!
Have both colors, want navy or olive please
I bought both colors and have been wearing them everyday. They are super lightweight and dry quickly but they also look pretty nice. The pockets are deep enough. I have big thighs and usually shorts are tight on my legs. These are not. My specs to help with sizing: waist 30", hips 40", size medium is perfect.
