I got this jacket in a size medium (I’m 5’4” and weigh 135) and it’s absolutely perfect for blocking out the wind. I’ve been using it in Iceland which is notoriously windy, and this combined with the Better Sweater while doing work outside is perfect for some warmth while keeping out the cold gusts. I haven’t gotten to test it too much in heavy rain yet but it’s worked well so far in light drizzles for keeping me dry. The hood is also great and covers my head well despite my puffy hair when I put it in a low ponytail (I have natural 4b hair and a lot of it) which was a pleasant surprise. It’s well-made and I love the zip pockets. I can also fit a few layers under this since I got the medium (I’m usually a small) and can fit a base layer shirt, my Better Sweater or a sweatshirt, and my Down Sweater all layered together underneath it. This is definitely one of my new favorite products!!
I'm excited about my new jacket. I admit I haven't had a chance to test it in the rain yet, but it was a great shell for a recent cool-weather bike ride. It kept me warm and warded off the wind without making me sweat. I got two sizes (small and medium) and ended up keeping the small since I like a more fitted look. For reference: Bust: 34" Waist: 29" Hips: 37" Weight: 127 pounds. Also happy that the sleeves weren't too short on me, which happens often. The hood is even large enough to pull over my bike helmet. And pit zips are always a huge pro. I also love the color (red with a hint of magenta).
This jacket did keep me dry in light rain, although it is a strange material. Crunchy like a tarp. The deal breaker, however, is that it is uncleanable. I wouldn't know this had I bought black or gray, but I bought white. Looks beautiful, but even a little mud will leave a mark that does not come off even with scrubbing. I am between treks right now and cannot remove dirt from the first trek, even with a toothbrush and soap. This problem is not unique to trekking--the same problem would happen for light use in the rain at home. Just brushing against something muddy is enough to stain. I will attempt to get my money back for this jacket when I return.
Bought this jacket a week ago and took it on a 3 day backpacking trip to WV. The first day, it rained pretty heavy for about 4 hours and was in the 60s. The jacket kept me dry for about 2.5 hours and then I started feeling dampness in the inside, even with pit zips opened. When I set up camp at 4 hrs, my inside T-shirt was pretty damp and the jacket was also damp. It took a long time to dry, not until the next day of hiking without any rain. It held up pretty well for the first 2 hrs of heavy rain but I don't think it's meant for heavy rain for a long time.
Using this on Appalachian Trail, its been rainy for past month. It heats up too fast until temps are in 50's, once its below 55 its a good all day rain jacket. In warmer temps its just another sauna coat. Outside dries quickly when rain stops. Coverage from hood is very good, and allows me to unzip the collar for cooling without getting much rain in. Pockets are far enough back to get to behind backpack straps. Good hip length keeps water off my waist. I have size small, theres lots of room for underlayers. Great wind blocker. Really wish it had a 2-way zipper. Come on Patagonia!
Perplexed by repeated, heavy moisture on the back, upper arms and chest of my mid-weight coat while wearing this shell several times in the rain and snow, I called Patagonia on 2/12/21 to see if I possibly received a jacket that made it out without waterproofing. Patagonia customer service is great but didn’t answer, maybe couldn’t, my question about a possible bad batch. With so many great reviews I thought I was alone but today I started shopping for a new rain shell and I see a review posted 2/15 with my same problem. I have the matching pants and they’ve been great. So the shell unfortunately has to go back. Not sure if I’ll take a chance on another though even if they are on sale now. A plastic trash bag would have helped me much more than this shell.
Extremely waterproof, windproof, rugged-feeling, etc., plus nicely breathable with pit-zips. All as you would expect from Patagonia. But...it has two issues that keep me from giving 5 stars: 1.) No 2-way zipper!!! Why not?! Although this jacket alone feels roomy, once additional layers are added, it would be nice to be able to loosen the bottom (at hemline) for a little less restrictive feel/more freedom. 2.) Sleeves don't really need to be so long. They come almost to my fingertips. You can tighten the cuffs to shorten the length, but then the sleeve material bunches up a lot. I'm guessing most size 4-6 women don't need that extra length. I would still recommend - would give 4.5 stars if that was an option!
I wear this jacket when I go for walks with my dog. I walk 3 miles everyday in everything the PNW throws at me. I needed this jacket to be a thin, outer layer that would keep me from the wind and the wet. I've used this jacket for 3 months now and am pleased with its performance. As an added bonus, the cut of this jacket is really flattering. I am 5'7, 165lbs, curvy, and long waisted, a hard combo to shop for. I bought the jacket in a L. It looks nice with just a t-shirt, but I can also fit a fleece comfortably underneath.
I bought this jacket last year to take on a whale watching trip in Baja. It worked great as a "paddle jacket" and on the boat for splashing. But in the last month I've used it twice to hike in the rain, and both times my base jacket underneath got very wet. The pit vents were closed. Hood up, jacket totally zipped, wrist Velcro sealed tightly. My nano puff jacket I wore underneath was very wet on the back and chest areas. SUPER disappointed, as I am a devoted Patagonia customer. I will be returning it, and if REI won't take it back because it's been about 14 months, I will be returning it to Patagonia, because I am sure they will stand behind the product. I've never been dissatisfied with any of their products, so I am thinking that maybe this single jacket is just a lemon.
I bought this jacket to use on the JMT this past September, it rained several days, and it kept me dry at first. When hiking through Muir Pass I was exposed to rain all day, I wouldn't even classify it as heavy rain, but somehow my layers under my jacket were moist. Unfortunately for me I had my down jacket on underneath due to the very cold temperatures on top of the pass, and my entire down jacket got wet and became completely useless. Not very impressed with its performance in this instance. The jacket may only be water proof for a short amount of time, or a very light drizzle, but with extended water exposure moisture seems to make its way through the jacket, not very "H2NO". It seemed to be a better wind breaker than a rain coat.
