Firm sole, kept my socks and feet dry when I got caught outside in pouring rain so they got my vote. Have not walked a long distance but have been good so far.
A typical Vasque shoe - good construction and comfort. That said, the toe box has a large volume and thus negatively impacts the fit for individuals with narrow feet. I ultimately returned the shoe and opted for a brand more suited for narrow feet.
After 4 prior pairs of Vasque boots, I was a bit surprised with these. I was not used to the soles which are incredibly slippery on wet rock or asphalt. I have never fallen before and have fallen twice with these, once on a wet rock on a hiking trail, and once on a slightly steep asphalt driveway. They also stated being waterproof, but after having them soak through while washing my car, I have had to apply a couple of coats of waterproofer.
I loved the Talus Trek Low Ultradry, but it was discontinued. I gave this a shot, for $30 more. Doesn't compare. Not at all waterproof, despite what ad claimed (claim has been removed since I bought it last spring). Build quality is low - seams are splitting after only 9 months.
Bought these for a gift, and he likes them. He's been wearing Vasque shoes for years and I was looking for something that was similar to past pairs. Looked at several different styles, and it seemed as if Vasque has changed the fit of some models recently. (I didn't get those models.) These seem to be a consistent fit, comfortable, stable, wearable. No hikes in them yet, so he hasn't given them a rugged test.
Good Shoes. Fit well, comfortable. Bought on great sale because of it being discontinued. Only way to shop!
There's nothing inherently wrong with this shoe (except the eyelets break relatively easily). It's perfectly average. The comfort, feel, and durability are all average. You could go buy 10 hiking shoes from a retailer and the Talus would be worse than about half and better than about half of them. I wore these for about 8 weeks before tossing them after a second eyelet broke. I found the tongue to be annoyingly uncomfortable. They feel 'clunky' like you are wearing thick clogs...If you put these on with a blind fold, you probably couldn't feel the difference between walking on conrete or a gravel trail. I am not convinced that the last is the same as the Mantra...the toe box feels different to me, but it may just be the placement of the laces and tongue. The Mantra was an excellent shoe and this shoe is just alright.
I purchased these about a month ago to replace my last pair of Mantra 2.0s. I've been wearing Mantras for the better part of two decades and was disappointed to find they are no longer available. Thus far I've found these to be a reasonable replacement. The most important feature to me is the last, which must be very similar or identical to the one used in the Mantras, because these shoes feel about the same on my feet. Not quite as roomy through the toe box, but still comfortable for an 18 hour work day or a day long hike. I'll see how they hold up over time and may update/repost as necessary, I have great faith in the Vibram soles, will see how the rest of the shoe ages. Giving four stars because the only shoe that deserves five are the six+ pairs of Mantras that I've owned. Hoping Vasque will take note and bring them back!
Thank you for the review! We appreciate your loyalty and support over the years!
I received these shoes as a replacement for a pair of Mantra 2.0 that had a defect. Initially, I was very pleased but as time passed so did the pleasure. It has been about a year and the soles on these shoes has not held up. Just everyday wear, no serious hiking. I have a pair of Vasque hiking boots that I have had for over twenty years and, though worn, they have held up better than these shoes.
We are sorry to hear that your talus XT low's did not perform as expected. These use a Vibram outsole which is a trusted partner of ours. Please contact us so we can further discuss what may have caused the premature wear. We can be reached at 1-800-224-4453 or customer.service@vasque.com
I took a chance on these because the Outlet price was great. Look great out of the box, and the first try-on was good. They needed a little breaking in but were comfortable from the start—great space in the toe area and a comfortable arch combined with lite weight. I would recommend it for short hikes on varied surfaces, and it does well in shallow water.
