My Vasque Men’s Talus XT hiking boots handled all of the challenges of my twenty two mile hike along the Appalachian Trail in Virginia. Uphill, downhill, over tree roots, stones, boulders and more the Vasque Men’s Talus XT hiking boots managed every challenge of the Appalachian Trail.
This is my 2nd pair of Vasque hiking boots, and this is an upgrade from my previous pair. It didn't take long to break them in, and now after a number of short hikes they are very comfortable and ready for the bike climbs. Vasque makes a great sole also and they grip everything just like my last pair which had seen me through the last 10-years of hiking the high peaks in my area. Great boots - highly recommend!
I had my doubts when I opened the box. The boots didn’t look like real leather, but they are, and the leather is waterproof in addition to the GoreTex lining. The toe box is big, which I need for comfort. This is at least the 5th pair of Vasque boots I’ve bought from REI. They always fit me. The shoe laces have an extra loop part way up, just below the lacing hooks. This allows different tightness between the foot and the ankle. I thought it was just an extra lacing step, but it lets my foot remain snug and allows more ankle movement. These boots have the right balance between stiffness and flexibility. The most comfortable boots in my collection.
I started wearing these boots as I recovered from a hip replacement--which is to say not heavy hiking. I've spent about 15 days in them--progressing to moderate and then more intense hiking in the North Cascades. I have heavy mountaineering boots as well, so these were intended for easier day trips. Less than 200 miles in the boots and the uppers are separating from the lowers in multiple places where the stitching is catastrophically failing, leaving 2 inch holes. They are only just broken in and are headed for return. Don't buy these boots.
I was a bit leery about getting these boots after other reviewers talked about the large toe box. As someone with long, skinny feet, I don't need a large toe box. However, I can say that the boot fits snuggly and the toe box, while being a bit larger than normal, isn't detrimental in any way. Overall, the fit was what I was expecting. These boots are waterproof, comfortable, and solid and they still weight less than comparable shoes. I've always liked Vasque and these boots appear to be high quality. I can't wait to spend many hours hiking the hills and mountains. I expect to have these shoes for years.
These boots are so comfortable and I absolutely loved them, but unfortunately they didn’t hold up. My old pair of Vasque I had lasted for 7+ years, which had me thinking these would too. However, I wore them once for an overnight trip in the North Cascades and after 18miles the toe cap was detached. Hopefully, others have better luck, but kind of a gamble with how pricy they are
These seem to be great boots in terms of ankle support, grip, and comfort. However, the toe box was a little bit too narrow for my feed and I experienced squeeze on both of my little toes on two hikes of roughly seven to eight miles each. I think that the wide size would have worked well. The grip is great on slippery (rain drenched) rocks. I recommend to those who can get an appropriate fit. Sadly, I have to return the boots and look for a pair in wide.
Everything feels great on this boot, except the large toe box. It's like wearing a shoe that is one size too big. You lose track of where the boot ends and constantly have to look down to avoid tripping over stuff. It's probably fine if you're sticking to groomed trails, but for off trail stuff I find it too clumsy.
I had a pair of Vasque hiking boots that lasted around 10 years with moderate use so I got these as a replacement. They fit similarly to my old boots, but they are much lighter weight while still retaining good support. I have been wearing them for a few weeks and they are very comfortable and appear to be high quality.
Ive been all over the world in these boots, through deserts, volcanos, mountains, snow, rain.... you name it. 5 years later still holding up and comfortable as ever
