Perfect wool sox!
These sox were just what I was looking for! I work outside in the plant nursery business and am always looking for warm, cushion-y sox for late fall and winter weather. I wanted sox that were closest to 100% wool, and these sox stay up on my calf all day without a lot of additional stretch materials added. I am a small woman at 5’2, wear a size 7.5-8 shoe and ordered a Medium—they fit perfectly. I wash the sox in the washer but just air dry, and they continue to fit perfectly. Am buying a few more pairs!

A new sock in town
REI has changed everything thing about these. I’ve been wearing the same style and size for over 15 years and suddenly they are different. The fit from toe to heel is short and the rise has been shortened. Not what I was expecting.

Weave and fabric content have changed 😞

I've purchased this brand, style and weight over several years. Now, the sock material and style have changed. As compared to the ones I just purchased, my others do not have nylon content and the weave is a closer knit. I purchased these for the cushion and reliable warmth of wood. This new version doesn't have enough cushion and I'm concerned that, if they get damp/wet, they will not be warm. The leg of the sock (part that goes up the ankly) is 2" longer than others of the same brand & style. Since I did not use the socks, I don't know if this is pro or con ... just an ob I rarely return things to REI, but this is going back

Terrible quality

I’ve been purchasing/wearing these same REI socks for about 20 years now and I have to say they’ve gone significantly downhill. Ooooof… the amount of stretch in the ankle is waaaaay too much. I wore them for all of about 20 min and they started slipping down. The stretch in the toe box is the same. Too much. My toes were sliding all over. I also compared them side by side with my REI socks that I purchased 2 years ago and the fabric was super different. I’m actually going to return them they are so bad. It’s really unfortunate what has happened to the REI brand over the last few years. It used to be a brand I could count on for at least minimal quality.

We really appreciate your feedback, Tania. For these socks, we've been using the same trusted materials and domestic manufacturing partner for many years. We hope to continue improving our products to maintain our customers' trust, and your specific feedback about excess stretch in the ankle and toe box helps make that possible.

Garbage

Don’t waste your money. These sox stretch way out of shape and more than a size larger on the first wearing and never return to their original size.

Not comfortable, nor correct size

Purchased these last night, after not being able to find the same kind I bought last year at REI. Absolutely the worst socks I've ever had. The toe box is huge, the length is more a size 11-12, NOT close to a 7. They bunched up in my boots today, and were so uncomfortable that I was having a hard time walking-and I walk 2-10 miles a day for work. Since I purchased two pair, and wore one today, the other pair is going back ASAP. Possibly someone sized them incorrectly, and I know they are "unisex", both men's and women's, but they don't fit like a sock should.

Very warm, sweat wicking

I got these sometime around 2016 when I broke my foot and needed thick socks and sturdy boots to recover. Rei is genius for offering these to try on whilst trying shoes. I bought 3 pair. They’ve been out of stock consistently but I hope that’s just seasonal/holidays. They retain stretch, wick away sweat, stay mostly up, and up until yesterday I didn’t know they were wool! There’s zero itch and I’m pretty sensitive to itchy wool. Hopefully they haven’t changed how they’re made since 2016. I live in a barn basically and find myself reaching for these socks in particular for the way they retain heat and wick away sweat= keeps my feet warm. Other socks can make them sweat and thus freeze in here.

Keeps my toes toasty!

Received free product

I'm a pretty big fan of these socks. I tend to buy thinner wool socks because I have wider feet, and sometimes thick socks make make my shoes feel uncomfortably tight. While these are pretty thick, I didn't think they were cumbersome. They were thick enough to keep my feet warm while I was on the move, and I didn't notice any unpleasant pressure. Though my feet are pretty wide, they're also quite small (I wear a women's size 5), and these socks were still too big for me even though I got the smallest size, which detracted from their comfort.

Horribly cheaply made

The socks are very poorly made. I can feel the texture with every step. The footpad is so loosely knit. I can't believe REI is selling these. So irritated. Thank God I'm not on the trail. I've used exclusively merino wool medium or thick cushion, all the top brands, never experienced this prior. They are not even worth a dollar. Useless.

Good quality, but now too short for comfy fit

Have always been a big fan of REI's version of Smartwool crew hiking socks, UNTIL my most recent purchase of two pair midweight and two pair lightweight. While the composition and of the material and the quality of the construction appears to be the same, when I got home and put them on, I discovered that the socks are now significantly shorter. They are at least one inch shorter, and probably closer to two inches shorter. The change is very obvious to me since besides hiking boots, I wear them with my cowboy boots too and prefer the socks pulled up all the way. Seems to me it is another version of downsizing tactics. Keep the price the same, but save money by shortening them and using less material. Disappointing to say the least. I'd return all four pair, but sadly I tossed the packaging with confidence days before I went to wear them.
