I live in Florida where we get numerous severe thunderstorms during the summer. I bought the Patagonia jacket after comparing it to over a dozen other brands/styles. I've used it in 7 heavy thunderstorms so far in the last three weeks and love the jacket. I remain dry, the jacket breathes well, the hood fits well, and the jacket is comfortable. I wish it had pockets on the interior, but every feature it has is well designed, works well, and it looks like it will hold up quite a while. The fit is just sufficient to layer another layer underneath.
My second torrentshell and honestly the only reason I replaced my last one after 12 years was that I was getting bored with the gray color. This is it, this is the only rain jacket/shell you need for the next decade. My only complaint would be the updated shell feels a bit stiff but I'm sure I'll break it in and I wish there was an interior zipper pocket but I'm sticking with 5 stars.
I bought this to replace an older Patagonia Torrentshell Parka that didn't have pit zips. This jacket is definitely breathable, and it was great when spending a week in the PNW and exploring Olympic National Park and the Olympic Peninsula, but the pit zips are where it really shines. Having the extra ventilation in the armpits makes a jacket like this 1,000 times nicer. I didn't feel like I had to take it off nearly as much as the older once, since I could just open up the pit zips and dump all the heat from my core when it was getting warmer outside.
I purchased this due to the burly 50D and 3L construction. However, I think it's actually overkill for my needs. The jacket is quite loud and crinkly and not that fun to wear, although it certainly keeps you dry. The DWR has started to wear off in the shoulders (area under my backpack straps) after only an estimated 30 miles hiking and backpacking while wearing this jacket. But I suppose that's expected. Breathability is good, but it's hard to attribute that to the material or the pit zips. As I don't do much bushwhacking or winter sports, I would probably prefer something lighter weight and more comfortable. However, it's advertised as a very durable and weatherproof jacket, which is exactly what it is.
This quick review is for sizing, in gratitude for the other reviews that helped me find the right size. I’m 6’0”, weigh 185 lbs, chest 40”, sleeve 24” so a fairly slim build. I bought a large and it’s close to a perfect fit (although I prefer a bit more length). Plenty of room for layering without looking too baggy and plenty of room in the shoulders. Sleeves are a _perfect_ length for rain gear = down to my first knuckles and when I raise my arms they reach my wrists; keeping arms dry even for cycling. The Velcro straps let you shorten them. The bottom of the jacket lands just at the bottom of my glutes, giving good coverage. The jacket is much lighter than I expected with a very high quality of fabric and solid construction. The color matches the photo exactly. All zippers are easy to adjust including underarm zips while wearing the jacket.
The Patagonia Torrenshell 3L exactly met my expectations. It is highly water resistant (is anything waterproof ?), yet quite breathable. While there are quite a few options that are less expensive and more expensive, this seems to hit the sweet spot in terms of features, functions and price. I didn't want to spend an insane amount to get the absolute 'best' jacket, I wanted something that worked well, from a trusted name (Patagonia is 2nd to none) and a good price. So far, this jacket is exactly what I had hoped, no issues with water penetration or sweating due to breathability problems.
Gives great protection from the wind and rain without making me overheated. Big enough to layer over warm layers comfortably. Material is a little crinkly and stiff, but it doesn’t bother me.
This shell kept the elements out during high winds, light rain, and light hail in the Eastern Sierras this weekend. Hood is just the right size with and without a beanie or hat as well! Large fits my wider frame just right while leaving room for insulation layers underneath!
I put my new jacket to the test standing in heavy rain and wind for four straight hours. At the end I was bone dry inside. Even the cuffs, which I had tightly velcroed, had no real moisture after working with my hands mostly at and below the waist. I was surprised, too, at how well the external pockets stayed dry inside. I still wish there were an internal pocket to guarantee protection of a cell phone and I.D., but a small bandana in the external pocket was still dry. I knew this jacket is not insulated (think of it as a sturdy windbreaker), but I wear layers and with a microfiber shirt I was perfectly warm with temperatures in the low 50s. For 40s a heavier sweater should work fine. I am very pleased and happy to recommend the Torrentshell 3L!
Wow! Thanks to REI's prompt shipping I got my jacket 10 minutes before I had to go to class in the middle of a midwest rainstorm. My new jacket saved me from having to sit in class for three hours while soaked! Also, the fit seems to be pretty spot on to me. I'm 6'1" at 170lbs, so somewhat thin, but there is plenty of room in the size Medium to add a mid-layer fleece or something for brisk weather. I tried ordering a Large based on previous reviews and returned it because I felt like I was 7 again wearing a way-too-big hand-me-down. Happy with the medium.
