I switched from clipless to flat pedals and I love this shoes! Very grippy on my flat pedals and I have no problem with these shoes when I rode through rough and rock terrain!
Start with the positives, great on a pedal, super grippy and strong, can get the power down and never feel they will slip off. Fairly light and breathable, feet are not a sweaty mess like with the Sleuth. As for the negatives, useless in anything but dry conditions, do not shed mud and turn into slippers almost instantly. Bought for combo bike and walking, in the wet they are all over the place, even in non muddy conditions and rocks and boulders you will soon be on your backside. If you have to push your bike up a muddy incline then just forget it, go round, no chance of your foot staying planted. No good for UK conditions. Need to find out how I can return!
I've owned these for just over a year, wearing them for just 20 rides total (on roads only) with flat pedals with very short screws on the surface for traction. I just noticed that parrs of the rubber soles are worn through badly at the mid-foot. These are, after all, mountain bike shoes and should hold up better for $150. Otherwise, they're fine. They do run quite narrow.
I wear Five tens when mountain biking (got many pairs now) and these Trailcross ones are nice and grippy when using flats - just as you would expect. They're nice and light, look great and the fit is perfect for me. However... I ride in the UK and there's often mud and water on the trails. The 'Breathable mesh' on the toe of these lets any water straight in resulting in wet feet. Really not great. They're also a bit of a pain to clean once clogged with mud. Definitely summer only shoes. I also have the Gore Tex version which are flippin' brilliant. Have kept my feet warm and dry throughout the winter.
I have about 50 rides and 500 miles on these and I’ve absolutely loved them. More comfortable and less skater looking than many 510 offerings but with their great rubber these are almost a perfect shoe. Initial discomfort around the ankle bones went away pretty quickly. Really about my only warning is that the toe is so super breathable, that it’s not a cold weather shoe or even something you want to splash through water with cuz it just pours right through to your sock. Great for heat, bad for water\cold. Nice toe box too, which is really important on a biking shoe. Hoping for some new colors in 2021, I’d grab another pair for sure.
I really wanted to love these shoes. After having the lower-end Freeriders that fit too loose and bulky, I thought these narrow models would be Goldilocks. No such luck. The narrowness does tame down in the toe with use, but the ankle slips like crazy because it has a slick leathery heel, and the cut around the ankle is way high which makes you remember you’re wearing them with every foot strike hitting your ankle bone. Yes, they’re the right size, for sure. They do run very small. Also, they attract dust/dirt on the most modest trail. These are weird. They feel like rented bowling shoes. Plus after the first ride I had very noticeable sole wear on the treads. Very unlike the Freeriders.
I was a bit skeptical about how grippy these shoes could be compared to the regular hiking shoes I was wearing, but that doubt quickly went away. If you're like me and you're stuck between the I-don't-want-to-be-locked-into-my-pedals-in-case-I-crash and the I-don't-want-my-feet-to-accidentally-slip-off-the-pedals-while-I-ride mentalities, these shoes are your solution. SUPER grippy to keep your feet on the pedals even on small-to-medium jumps and drops, but you're also able to bail if you need to. IMO these are the perfect medium. Plus, they're very breathable and really light and comfortable enough for those hike-a-bike sections. Worth every penny IMO.
Bought these back in September before trip to colorado and did not disappoint. I have found myself in some scenarios where the flexibility and maneuverability of these shoes saved me, especially in hike a bike scenarios. I had the free ride pros before this, way heavier and bulky. Don’t wait on these!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Very uncomfortable shoes. I have narrow feet so I've never had this happen before. But the toe box compresses and pinches my feet even as I walk (never mind run). Additionally, any buyer should know that under the insole is a very VERY had piece of plastic that runs the entirety of the shoe. I'm sure this is meant for some sort of stability. But it just results in an inflexible shoe and very stiff sole with every step. Overall, I can't think of a shoe I have purchased in the last 20 years that is less comfortable. My leather work shoes are more comfortable. I'd regretfully NEVER go running or even walking in these shoes.
I have had the waterproof version of the Five Ten Trailcross Mid shoe for a few years, and decided to get the low-top version for summer. I've been wearing Freeriders for many years, but it seems like the toebox has gotten narrower in recent years and even when I go up a half size they are still unpleasantly tight. The Trailcrosss seems to have a roomier toe box area while still fitting my narrow heels well. I normally wear a women's size 8 but I decided to get these in men's 6.5 in the hopes they'd be a bit wider. They fit me perfectly. I wish other styles of Five Tens were offered with a wider toe box.
