Tough call between this, the Passage 2, and the Halfdome 2. Not many reviews on the Trail Hut 2 so I want to post my initial impressions and share a couple pictures. 1.) The walls are nearly vertical. 2.) The rainfly and doors are A-symetrical meaning you'll get great airflow throughout the entire tent. 3.) The rainfly folds way up so you can still do some stargazing with the fly on then quickly drop it if the weather changes. 4.) The poles fold up nice and compact. 5.) The tent, footprint, rainfly, stakes, poles, etc. all feel very durable (as expected with REI). Overall I am very pleased with this tent. It is easy to set up and take down, it feels airy and roomy, it is esthetically pleasing (love the orange rainfly), and is priced very well.
I have had this tent for around 3 years and I love it so much. It is very light and a great backpacking tent. Two person which makes it perfect for camping with a significant other. Easy to setup and works for me any many different weather. It had the tarp foot print thing built in underneath which really helps in the rain and its nice not having to find one that fits like with other tents.
I have used this tent for backpacking all across Washington State for the last three years and it has never let me down. It is durable, simple to set up, and thoughtfully designed. This weekend we camped in some of the most intense thunderstorms WA has seen in five years, and we stayed very dry inside. Some things I really appreciate about this tent are the loops built into the tent that allow lights to be hung, tent flags to be secured, and how easy it is to set up - even when I am backpacking alone. This tent is nice and roomy for one person, and works great for two, but it is a bit of a (manageable) squeeze if you have your packs inside.
I have used this tent for two backpacking trips. The 3 night in March in the Smokies was cold and wet, but the tent stayed dry inside. I stayed plenty warm. It performed well on a 2 night at Grandfather Mountain, though I opted to stay in a shelter the second night after hiking in the rain and fearing hypothermia. It sets up very easily, packs away efficiently, and cleans up well. The rainfly attaches to the tent body with clips and to the poles using Velcro, which seems a little value engineered, but it does work. I have had 2 nights of high winds, one of which was rainy, and I was secure. I use a 2 ppl tent because I enjoy having extra room.
-Spacious & perfect for one adult(I’m 5’-8” @ 155lbs). However, two would definitely fit and sleep comfortably as long as there isn’t too much luggage. *Not recommended for people over 6’-0”, unless you sleep in a… yogi position. lol. -Takes less than 5 mins to set up(excluding hammering the stakes; that depends on the soil). The tent also goes back into the bag without any effort. -Lightweight and easy to carry around. -Shape of the tent helps it stay grounded during high winds. -Only con I can think of is that the height of the tent is low. But it’s not like you’re trying to have a dance off in there, so you’ll be fine. :)
After doing a lot of research on the best backpacking tent to purchase and talking to fellow backpackers, I decided to purchase this tent. I absolutely love it. It's perfect for car camping or backpacking and it's pretty easy to set up and tear down. The rain fly provides a lot of privacy and protection from the elements. I really love the vents you can set up at the top of the tent. I'd recommend this to anyone looking to upgrade to a backpacking tent.
First off, this is my first “higher end” tent that I’ve bought, but I’m definitely happy with how it works. Ventilation was incredible. I never felt stuffy or like I was sleeping in a tent at all. With the vestibules shut it retained a decent amount of warmth in the tent. Nothing crazy, but enough to notice a difference when I got out of it in the middle of the night and the morning. Set up was easy, and with it set up properly it felt completely solid and like it could withstand a pretty good wind gust. My only complaint would be that the tent stakes are super flimsy and bend super easy, so my only recommendation would be to grab some better stakes before you take off. All in all though, a great tent for the money
I've had my Trail Hut 2 for about three years and it's a wonderful tent for camping and car camping. It lives in my car and I use it for those on-a-whim type adventures. It sets up easy, it's spacious (I'm 6'3 and can lay out with an inch or so of room left) and the mesh vents well while giving you a great view of the night sky.Three years of extensive use and it's no worse for wear. I've certainly gotten my money's worth with it. Please note, this is NOT a good tent for backpacking. It's really heavy and doesn't pack down well, you're doing yourself a disservice carrying it for more than a mile or two. For backpacking, I love my Sierra Designs Clip Flashlight 2.
Great deal on a backpacking tent on sale, very nice that the footprint is included. Fits 2 comfortably, wish there were a couple more internal pockets for storage but overall very nice. Has worked perfectly for 5+ backpacking trips so far.
We set this tent up at Kite Lake in CO for the first time out of the bag, putting in the last stake SECONDS before an intense storm came through. Very sturdy and dry tent thanks to the built in foot print. I’m 6’0 and she is 5’5 we had plenty of room, but if I was any taller I would have started to feel a little cramped. Would totally recommend for car campers and backpackers.
