Me: I'm 5'8" tall, weigh 150 pounds and am almost 40 years old. I walk my dog twice each day and we go hiking a few times a month. My shoe size ranges from 7.5 to 9.5 depending on the brand. I live in the Southeastern Pennsylvania and have worn these boots in temperatures from the 20's through the mid 50's. Fit: I don't like ordering shoes online from a brand I've never owned, but these were on sale and there weren't many left so I picked size 9. They fit perfectly, very true to size, good width and nice ankle support. The tongue connects to the boot with a felt like material and opens rather wide making it easy to put them on and take them off. Finish: I love the look of these boots. I have owned several pairs of hiking boots and was looking for what I think of as a classic boot, much like the Scarpa Delta that I had years ago. These were the closest I could find and I get complements frequently. The Vibram sole provides excellent traction in muddy and snowy conditions, the leather uppers offer a clean look, the hardware looks like it will last a long time. Some boots I have owned have quick lacing hooks that are too abrasive and wear on the laces too fast but these are open and smooth but firmly secured to the boot. Durability: I was reluctant to start wearing these out in the rain and snow but the leather uppers take daily abuse in stride, even the laces are holding up better than I thought they would. I use a damp cloth to wipe them down if they get too dirty from mud on the trails or salt from the street. I haven't bought it yet but I will buy the Danner leather conditioner so these boots last as long as possible. Overall: I am very pleased with these boots! The only reason they did not receive 5 stars is the amount of insulation. I wore these boots while walking for over an hour in the snow on a 30 degree F day. After the hour my toes were pretty cold. If you're going to wear these for a long time in very cold weather I would wear thick socks. I expected the insulated version of the Mountain 600 to have more insulation and to hold up a little better against the below freezing temps.
So far I’ve only had the opportunity to wear them a handful of times but they have been very comfortable. My only gripe would be the fold of material on the tongue that bunches up on the ankle. It can be pretty painful if I lace them up snug so I have been keeping them loose which has led to some snow creeping it’s way into the boot. As for style and color I am very satisfied. I can’t attest to wear and tear yet but these are first impressions so far. They both have a small gap where the sole is glued to the boot that may or may not be part of the design or a defect. Hoping it won’t allow for debris and salt to collect there and cause issues further down the line.
Super comfy, easily the most comfy shoe/ boot I’ve worn. The reason for knocking stars is the length of back order these had and that right out of the box the quality control was just not there for the price. In multiple areas the shoe was separating from the sole. It’s sad because otherwise these are amazing, but I’d hate to be deep into a backpacking trip and have my toes exposed due to my brand new boots separating.
Having trekked over a dozen times in as many years through some of the most treacherous Himalayan & Alpine terrains & under diverse climatic conditions, I can confidently vouch that Danner Mountain 600 is the closest competitors there is, to the Keen Summit County & Keen Targhee High Lace, two of the best Winter hiking boots out there. The only reason they come a close third is because of their narrower fit around the toe box. Even the widest (EE) Danner Mountain 600 fit is comparatively more tighter than the roomier toe box of the two aforementioned regular sized Keen's. The snugness aside these boots are made to last. Their form, finish & fit makes one feel equally at home both on the hiking trail & in casual urban settings. For those who don't have wide toes these boots will feel straight from the heaven. They are more versatile than my Salomon Quest 4D 3 GTX as they can blend in all type of settings & perform remarkably well from Fall to Spring. Also Danner's keep your feet dry & well ventilated in comparison to the Salomon's .
I've been hiking most of my life, if not all, and I spent a few years in the military. I say this to establish that I'm accustomed to wearing boots, and I'm particular about comfort and utility. I've had these boots for a number of years, and they are absolutely my favorite boots to walk and hike in. They've been on countless trails and a few mountains. Outrageously comfortable. The only drawback to these is that they are, on occasion, too warm. I wouldn't take these to the desert unless I couldn't find my hot weather boots. To add to this, I live in Minnesota and can happily wear these boots about 10 months out of the year - it's only when it gets really hot that my feet get a little too sweaty. It's -10 F outside right now and I've been wearing these since all morning to walk the dog and start my day. Might be a little chilly if I went for a hike right now, but from 0 to 70 degrees, these are perfect. They look nice enough that I'll wear them to work or around town. As for sizing, I wear a size 9 in Nike running shoe and size 9 for this boot. It's ever so slightly bigger, but it's perfect for wool socks.
I really like these boots. I own another pair of Danner hiking boots which are uninsulated and wanted an insulated pair for colder weather. I live in Wisconsin and have worn these boots shoveling snow in below zero temperatures for extended periods of time. Feet stayed warm with just normal weight socks. They fit like a glove and have broke in extremely well. I have a normal to slightly narrow width foot and the sizing which I normally use was perfect. Very comfortable to walk in - soft but sure grip even under slippery conditions.
First off I’d like to say she is definitely kept my feet warm. I’ve taken them on hikes in the freezing temperatures and they have served that purpose well. Unfortunately, the leather over my toes warped and began to dip inward making walking in them unbearably painful. This happened on both boots. You can’t tell from the outside that there is any structural damage but once you slip them on the material lining the boots begins digging into my feet.
I have used these boots for light day hikes thus far. Also, I have been using them during the fall with temps in the 60’s. I have not used them in cold weather yet, so I cannot comment on insulation. I can tell you that they required no break-in period. They are extremely comfortable and that they provide a smooth ride. Well made, appear to be durable. Time will tell. Great grip on rocks, roots, mud, gravel. No issues thus far. Very happy.
For the important aspects of the shoe, the reason I bought them. The outsole true its name performs quite well on slick subzero icy concrete. Chicken grease is a solid fail. The insulation is, well it does its job well enough. I bought these for a -10 degree walk in freezer. My feet have gotten unbearably cold multiple times. So I’m still on the fence about them honestly. Honestly, I just want my Quarry USA boots to have the ice grip and I’d never look back. now for the less important details. As far as the style, they’ve got it covered. No uncomfortableness as of yet from the shoes but its still quite early in their life. The cushion good too, feels supportive without feeling fake.
I have owned a pair of Danner Mountain 600s for over one year, so I knew the quality, ruggedness, and craftsmanship that came with these boots. I use them for everyday life, hunting, and hiking. The grip on these boots in most terrain is second-to-none! I own three different styles of this same boot and have removed all other similar boots from my wardrobe. These boots keep my feet dry and the warmth is amazing. In Poland, the temperature, on average, was just above freezing and my feet remained warm, even when sitting for long periods of time. I highly recommend the Mountain 600!
