Sizing Notes

Rock Shoes: Scarpa recommends you downsize 1/2 to 2 full sizes from street shoe size, though downsizing depends on shoe model, intended use and personal preference.



Mountaineering: Scarpa recommends you upsize 1/2 size or more depending on desired fit. Scarpa plastic mountaineering boots are based on the UK sizing scale.



Ski Boots: All Scarpa ski bootsare measured in Mondo sizing.Highlighted (or not) sizes share the same shell size; the liners are lasted for each 1/2 size. Some skiers may want to downsize up to 1 full Mondo size, depending upon personal preference.

How to Choose Mountaineering Boots

Choose based on your activity: 

  • Insulated boots are warm and comfortable after breaking in; ideal for long approaches. 

  • Three-season boots are light and versatile for hiking and scrambling; they have a lower price point than the others. 

  • Plastic mountaineering boots are durable, rigid, waterproof but bulky and heavy; commonly found as rentals 

 

Do you plan to do much hiking in your boots? 

  • Three-season boots: lightest option for alternative activities like hiking and scrambling. 

  • Insulated boots: not as light, but light enough to work for approach hikes. 

  • Plastic boots: exclusively designed for mountaineering.

Very high quality boot with a very stiff sole. This boot excels in vertical and on glaceries as it was designed for. Not recommended for long approaches where more flex is needed but this boot was not designed for that. Very warm while remaining less bulky.

These are nice looking and well built boots, warm and solid leather, and with ample space inside, made in Italy. Unfortunately, I had hard time finding the right size, particularly online. I'm a European 42, maybe even 41.5 for wide shoes, very standard size, both legs same. Ordered 43 for a bigger sock - too small. Returned. Ordered 43.5 - still felt short. Returned. Ordered again, now 44 - too big. They are wide too, so that pair felt really loose. Don't know if I could have painfully break in the 43.5 but I needed something ready to go. Would be much easier if they had a showroom where one can try different sizes. Also, the calf part felt kind of flimsy and light for a $600 all-season mountain boots, compared with competition. Ended up buying La Sportiva Nepal EVO GTX, in 43. My advise, if you really like these boots go up in size at least 1.5 sizes and buy two different sizes at a time, will save you time.

perfect for ice climbing

Used these boots for multiple days ice climbing in Colorado. (and for the approach in/out). Used with crampons. Comfortable all day in the elements, and most importantly support and performance when ice climbing. I found them small and upsized 1.5 sizes from hiking boot. My son upsized 1/2 size.

Runs small, good mountaineering boot

I typically wear a size 10-1/2 to size 11 boot. I started with a size 11 and it was too small all the way around. I returned and got a size 11-2/3 (I think 46 EU) overall it fit much better, but the toe box was still exceptionally tight. I kept this size, but shoved a baseball as deep into the toe box as I could and this worked to make the boot much more comfortable. The boot held up well with strap-on crampons. I typically need to stop and adjust the boot a bit when I begin descending or I'll ram my toes into the front of the boot. No blister issues. This is a good boot for warmer weather mountaineering.

More colors to choose from would be better

Well built boot not hot in the summer. The Scarpa is very breathable boots. Not used in cold weather yet but will. I use the boots to work in and I work on Transmission Power Lines. They’ve taken a beating so far and although a little pricey but I’ve been pleased with them. Even enough to buy another pair.

Switched from LaSportiva to Scarpa this season

Trying these out in the pacific northwest this season. I made the switch this year from the LaSportiva Nepals. Scarpa is known to be better for "wider" feet. I think these things are very subjective, and I would recommend going in store somewhere to try them on to be sure. Your boot should be fitted tight enough that it is snug, but still enough of a small gap for your toes to not get crushed when you are step kicking into glaciers. I had a 47 in LaSportiva, and the 47 seemed to fit best in these as well for me (normally a size 12.5-13 depending on tennis shoe brand). I have very skinny feet, but nonetheless they are larger than average. These seem to fit like a glove and I am eager to test out how well they hold up in harsh conditions. So far, I like the fit much better than Nepals. I will update if there are any further noticeable differences.

These boots have worked well for me but they are far from perfect. They do the job for beginner mountaineering and ice climbing but you'll eventually need to upgrade. They are a little warm for summer and too cold for winter activities. Good to save money over buying two pairs, but suffer in both environments. They often get wet and get cold even in summer because of that. They are heavy and it's a workout going up a mountain but they stick to rock like glue and are easy to climb in. I'd recommend Phantoms instead.

Well built and well-peforming boots.

Well built, and sturdy! Had a very easy time getting the size right online, which usually worries me. Performed well in a short test run on an artificial ice wall, but will update with further use

Not particularly wide

These are not as wide as I expected I.e. they seem true to size. So if you plan to wear thicker socks and/or insoles, size up a full size from your street shoe.
