Great car camping tent that stands up to the elements!

We got this tent for car camping with two humans and two dogs. It is great! We found it super roomie in comparison to other 6-person tents and love that we know it will hold up to the elements. This tent also stood up to some crazy 30mph winds like a champ on one of our trips. At one point we had 8 people in the tent playing card games and it still didn't feel cramped. We've had this tent for a couple of seasons now and super happy.

Very stable and reliable in bad weather

This review is actually for the previous version of the Flying Diamond 6. I'm not sure how much has been changed for the current version other than colors, but from what I've read they're pretty consistent from year to year so I wouldn't expect any big changes in materials or construction quality. The tent sets up fairly easily. After some practice I able to set it up solo in ca 10-15 minutes working slowly; I could probably do it in half the time if I did away with being particular about it and just set it up ;-). It's roomy inside & has a separate "room" in the back with its own door. There are lots of mesh pockets throughout the interior to stow small items. With the rain fly set up and guyed out the tent is very stable - even in high winds and stormy weather. I once tried it out with my then 6 year-old son in the back yard during a thunder storm & while the walls shook (this was very severe weather) the tent stayed up and stayed dry. I didn't have the fly velcro-ed to the poles & this probably impacted the stability. It's described as a 3-season tent, but would probably work for most winter weather (especially here in Texas). One drawback is that the back of tent isn't really supported by the poles & needs to be staked at the corners to stay up, so it's not 100% "free standing". Other than that I'vd had no complaints. I've had the tent over 6 years now & used it for several short camping trips of 2-3 nights. It's held up very well during winds that flattened other tents & has been reliable against rain storms.

Replace an old tent.

Needed a replacement for a tent that I have owned for 30 plus years that finally failed in 80 mile an hour winds. Wanted a geo-dome tent due to my past experiences with the design. This tent exceeds all of my requirement. We tent camp year round, from Texas to the Pacific Northwest. I have every expectation that this tent will last as long or longer that its predecessor.

Floor started peeling after one night, no support

The polyurethane (waterproof layer) started peeling off the floor on the first night of use, all over the tent. It peeled where we just had thermarests and slept, we didn't walk on where it had peeled. Big Agnes hasn't responded (its been over a week since opening a support ticket), so I ended up having to return it to REI. I own 5 tents, some 20 years old, and none have ever had a problem before this.

Flying Diamond 6 Weather Fortress and High Altitude Mansion

In late July, me and my four boys went backpacking up to the Crestones in Colorado. We took our new Big Agnes Flying Diamond 6 person tent in backpacks by splitting the tent up into several different parts. At 19 lbs, the tent is somewhat heavy but between the five of us, each pack had less than 4 lbs of tent weight. So that's not bad at all. After packing in 2 1/2 miles, we set the tent up at 12,060 feet, just below the face of Crestone Needle, a 14er. Setting up the tent was a bit complicated especially since a thunderstorm was bearing down on us. Out of necessity, we had the tent up in less than 10 minutes. The poles are color coded for the tent so that helped. The large size of the tent made for a fun time with me and the four boys since we were all together. We made many memories that would not have been possible if we were in two separate tents. The tent design is really impressive and the craftsmanship is top notch. We were camped below Crestone Needle for just over four days. In that time, we experienced three thunderstorms, two rainstorms, a windstorm with 30 to 40 mph gusts and a pounding hailstorm with up to quarter-size hail that lasted 30 minutes. The tent did great! The flying diamond handled the various types of bad weather with no problem. When the bad weather was raging outside, the tent was a safe haven of comfort. The velcro fly-tent attachments and guylines made the tent unshakable in strong wind gusts. When we got a barrage of hail that lasted a half hour, the tent did fine with no issues at all, even with a load of hail on top and drifting hail around the tent. The Flying Diamond 6 person tent sells for about the same as many four season tents half its size. By my evaluation, the Flying Diamond 6 person tent is the best value among the four season tents. Also, the overall design is well thought out and would rival many Everest basecamp tents. The Flying Diamond 6 person tent is the best tent I've ever owned by far.

We didn't love this tent

We bought the Big Agnes Flying Diamond 6 to upgrade the size of our 4P Marmot tent that was wearing out. We use the tent primarily in hot weather on multi-day rafting trips for a family of 4. Pros: - seems to have been constructed with good materials: zippers, fabric, ties all work great - easy to set up - nice size Cons: - smaller vestibule end of tent wasn't stable. It required being staked down to maintain it's shape (it's not always easy to keep stakes down in deep sand). I'm not sure how well this would hold up in a wind storm. - NO VENTILATION. The door only has about 1/3 of the opening to allow for a screen. Otherwise it was just the ceiling. No way a cooling breeze is moving through this tent. - fairly big and bulky in size, not very packable We used this for a weekend on the river and plan to return it for something with better stability and ventilation.

Great tent

This is a great tent which seems like it would be difficult, but thanks to the brilliant idea of the colored poles and slots it makes it completely easy. Bag for the tent is easy to pick back up and fit in and nice. Sturdy tent and so far so good, we took it on an 11 day trip which hit snow to 90 degrees on the one trip and everything in between and it was great! Love the built in pockets also.

Awesome Tent Light weight for it's size!

For the tent size the tent was the lightest best built ten I could find, The tent withstood 30 straight hours of 30 MPH winds with gusts up to 50 MPH 3 Plus days of rain with no condensation and supported a 4" snow accumulation with no issues. The tent was basically pitched in a marsh and the floor kept all the water out. We did drag some water in on our boots but that was inevitable. We had 2 guys cots 2 chairs and all the gear to go with a 10 day hunting trip. The vestibule was great for making meals and storing water and a couple of odds and ends. We heard reports of other hunters having issues . But the Big A kept us warm and dry. I have also used the tent on a summer horse pack tent with three people and a dog and had plenty of space. I have six tents everything from wall tents to one man tents. This tent is a great base tent and really well thought out. Thanks for the great equipment Big Agnes.

Great tent, terrible zippers!

Overall this tent is amazing, however the zippers are very cheap and don't hold up. Although they will replace them for cheap, the cost of shipping a $600+ tent, to replace a $5 zipper is insane and who knows how long it will take!
