Nice pack, if not for me.
Generally this is a great pack. Looks good. Has lots of well thought out features. Awesome entry options. Good organization. Clever designs. Good materials and structure. Good handles and pockets. There is a lot to like. I used this pack on a 10 day European vacation and it served us well. Ultimately, however this backpack did not work for me for the following reasons: 1. My primary complaint is that the shoulder straps were not long enough. I have broad shoulders and I found that the hardware would dig into my armpits, especially under a full load. 2. Related is the fact that the shoulder straps do not have enough padding. I understand that the straps were designed to be stowable, which limited their thickness. This could very well be forgivable if the straps were longer, but unfortunately these two points alone were enough for me to return the pack. 3. I did not care for the adjustable volume. Instead of choosing to limit or expand the volume, I wish the pack were just 40 L. I didn’t care for the zipper expansion mostly because it shifted the load volume up and away from your hips. This could have been mitigated to some extent by better packing, but traveling is dynamic. How you pack at the outset will change, and you may not be able to adjust for the geometry and load balance of the pack. 4. The buttons for limiting volume also seemed pointless. I get the intent, though I would never have chosen to use it. Part of the reason why is actually a plus for the pack. It was fairly rigid and structured which was very nice for packing and organizing. Due to the inherent rigidity, I don’t think the pack needed to be intentionally reduced in volume. Unlike some packs, it could maintain its shape without being fully loaded. 5. Side bottle pockets, though highly desirable, were less expansive and stretchy than I expected. I don’t see how anyone could squeeze a liter Nalgene in there while the pack was loaded. Narrower bottles were tight, if secure. 6. The side handles were not reachable at the center of gravity which was awkward at times. This criticism supplements my critique of the zipper expansion which would throw off the center of gravity. I know I have been somewhat harsh. As previously stated, the pack is really nice. Had the straps fit me better, I would have forgiven everything else. I hope potential buyers find my comments helpful.

Same defect twice coming from REI stock
After a ton of online research, some real life test-drives of this bag when spotted at airports (people who own this bag are generally excited and proud to show it off, especially to someone who recognizes what it is), and a long time drooling and plotting, I used my 20% off member's coupon this past spring 2020 along with some dividend earnings and went for it--quarantine shopping therapy. The first bag I received had misaligned snaps so that the bag could not be converted to 35L; the female and male halves of the snaps were offset from each other by about an inch, requiring major torsion of the bag in order to fasten. In the photo I'm pinching the inner half of the fastener, and my thumb shows where the outer half should be, which is not I might not have noticed had I not watched all the Peak Design tutorials about this bag and handled it in person prior, but I knew how this function should perform, and it was not user error. I requested a replacement, and that bag was lost in transit. Third time requesting the bag, and the same problem with the snaps came up. It couldn't have been the same bag sent to me twice because of the overlapping timing between when I received the replacement and when I sent the original defective one back. REI said there wasn't much they could do because it wasn't possible to pick through the stock to make sure that the next one I got didn't have the same defect. They suggested I contact Peak Design directly. I sent photos and an explanation of the problem to PD, including the fact that I'd received more than one defective bag from the REI stock. Peak Design said nothing about checking the REI stock and just offered to replace the bag under warranty, but not before "reminding" me that snaps can be stiff at the start and will loosen up over time, as if that were the issue rather than the manufacturing defect illustrated in the photos, plus I'd have to pay shipping. As a company that seems to pride itself on design and precision, I was surprised at the cavalier response. I ditched the whole thing out of exasperation/frustration and returned the (2nd) defective replacement bag. PD's response made me wary about their customer service/warranty policy, and I lost out on my 20% coupon because of the time it took to process all the replacements and returns with the scanty REI customer support during quarantine. I'm considering buying again because I haven't found another bag with the same combination of features, and I could still return easily to REI if there is another issue, but buyer beware that there may be some snap defects floating around in the REI inventory. :( If you don't plan on converting to the smaller 35L format, this won't matter much to you. For me it was an important function, and for the money, I expect all of the features to work properly.

Almost perfect for me!

Very nice looking and elegant backpack. Very functional for photography if you pair this with the Peak Design Cubes (sold separately). I have two cubes paired with this - the medium and the small. My usage: I use this with two cubes - one small and one medium, I carry a 5D MkII with 70-200 mm and a 40D with 24-70mm. I also have a 135mm stacked in there. 2 Speedlites also come with me: Pros: Grab-Handles: All sides have handles enabling quick grab and go. Shoulder Straps and Suspension: Good support over-all. The Sternum and Waist Straps are essential for a backpack of this size and really help in stabilizing the load. Multiple Access points: This is made for photographers, although could be used for general purpose travel as well. There are four access points for grabbing equipment - 1. Back Opening - this is awesome when you lay the bag down and open this up, you get to see the whole interior! 2. Front Opening - gives access to the large 4 pockets (for passports, etc) 3. Two side access - for quick access to cameras. This is really convenient! Expandability: There are three sizes in this - compressed, medium and large. Mine is mostly set to medium. Bottle Holders: There are two expandable bottle holders on both sides. Build Quality: This is really well made and made to last! I see several years of use for me! The zippers are also of great quality! Cons: Weight and Size: This is slightly on the heavier and bulkier side, but you need this if you carry a lot of equipment. I wish there was a water bladder compartment for hikes. This is a big miss for me!

Most Sustainable Camera Backpack in 2023

It is not only a high quality camera backpack, but it is also a functional daily carrier and travel bag. Because of the high quality recycled materials and modular design it gives me the peace of mind knowing that it is a circular and ethical product. With its unique packing system the Travel Backpack is especially useful when it comes to storing my camera gear while I utilise the bag for other purposes, like traveling or hiking. Highly recommend it to digital nomads who are looking for a multi purpose backpack that will last forever.

Best Backpack Ever!

Return to Office when one has moved to the country had created a whole new problem set for me. How to carry around luggage for a 2 night stay every week. At first I used my draggable wheelie bag - after a few weeks of clipped ankles and much frustration at navigating pedestrian curbs, and the noise of dragging it around, I gave up. Luckily someone recommended Peak Design and I won't look back. First and foremost, I am 170cm female, and the 45L is SUPER comfortable. The Peak people have clearly put the user first when designing this. It has all the zips and access to compartments you need. It has straps EVERYWHERE so whatever position it's in, it can be picked up. It also stands upright so no dramas when on the tube or train worrying whether if you let go, will it fall on someone. It's got heaps of compartments - perfect for gym gear. I love the small zip pouch on the outside - easy to access headphones, keys etc. It also looks great. If it came in leopard print I'd give it 6 stars ;-)

Good space, but the shoulder straps are terrible.

I bought the sage travel backpack in March at the Photography show. First, let's talk about the positives of the bag. The most noticeable thing about the bag is the look; it is easily one of the best bags I have seen, and the sage really suits the bag. The build quality is also very good; it feels expensive and built to last. Inside the bag, the space is impressive, and the fact that you can zip and expand the bag from 27 litres to 33 litres. I also like the laptop pocket, which is really practical. For all the positives, unfortunately, the backpack is let down for a couple of reasons. The first is the hooks for the carry straps. Generally, it is nice to have them, but the 2 hooks at the bottom of the bag rub against my lower back, which is annoying. Also, I find the sternum strap pretty useless; it doesn't store particularly well and is always dropping out of its stored position. The main issue, though, is the shoulder straps, which are absolutely awful. When I tried the bag out, it was empty, and the bag is OK, right up until you fill the bag up with equipment and books for university, the thin straps just put so much pressure on my shoulders that I have to take the bag off. So whilst the bag has good space, I have to be so wary of what I put in the bag, because I can't carry around anything really heavy, which is pretty useless for a lot of what I would want to use the bag for.

Holds shape, fits as a personal item or carry-on

I bought this a couple months ago for my trip through Central America and a few sailing adventures I had planned. I am six weeks in and it has held up perfectly. The only complaint I have is the main divider layer just got in the way, so I unzipped it and kept it rolled up the entire time. It would be nice if Peak Design could make it detachable? I use the little pockets to stash little things like money, chapstick, keys, phone, passport etc. and they are very secure and out of sight. It holds my rain jacket, computer, chargers, umbrella, drone bag, the Peak Design toiletry bag, medium size compression PD bag which holds my 10 shirts, 4 shorts and 1 pair of pants. It also holds the small PD compression bag with 8 pairs of undies and 7 pairs of socks. These could probably hold more clothes inside them honestly. It rained so much in Central America, however the material held up and everything remained dry inside. It does weigh more than hiking-specific bags and the shoulder straps don't have any elastic cushion/shock absorption, so they aren't the most comfortable. It does get quite hot in the sun, but other than that it has served me quite well. I never had to use the expansion zippers. If I were back-packing in nature, carrying gear such as a tent, hiking/climbing gear etc, I would go with a more light weight pack. Since I stayed in hotels and hostels and sailboats, it was perfect for my situation. I plan to keep using this for the next few months while I continue traveling to different countries. 10/10 would recommend for regular travel, business travel and to school/work!!! The last picture with the blue neck pillow attached was when I first packed it before leaving my house. The rest were taken yesterday at the airport.

Best bag I've ever owned!!!

Best bag ever! I'm constantly moving from one house to another. I live at both houses plus I film for my YouTube channel so i needed a bag that would cover multiple situations. This bag along with a few other accessories like the packing cubes allow me to pack everything i need all neat and tidy. This bags expanding design allows me to fit as much or as little as i need. I love that this bag looks deceptively small in comparison to how much it actually can fit and it can fit a surprising amount in it. Its side zippers as well handles on all four sides plus the back make this one of the most versatile bags you can buy. I like to pack the main compartment so that I can still access stuff from the side zips such as a hand sanitizer for when its needed. The bags also built like a tank just take one look at it and you'd know it was built to last. My only complaint would be that it's not the most comfortable and that 's also a common complaint by the way but I don't think it's that bad. If you're looking for a bag that is extremely versatile, holds a ton and is build to last than this is it. :)

45L Travel Backpack for 2 Week Trip to Mexico

I did my research on several backpacks before ultimately buying this one. It’s kind of hard to compare when you are watching videos of the backpacks, instead of having them physically with you. With that in mind, I want to say that I picked this one based on the look, but mostly on the fact that it can expand from 35L-45L. I traveled on several flights in Mexico with the backpack fully expanded to 45L and had no issue taking it as a carry on. The material and durability was great. One of the best features I liked was the anti pick pocketing details the backpack comes with. I didn’t take my laptop, and instead used the laptop sleeve to put a big envelope with all my important travel documents. Overall I this this backpack was worth it. Great quality, looks good, and worked for me. The capacity was more than enough for me. As a reference this is all I was able to fit in my bag for my trip. For info I used the roll method to pack my clothing which helped fit more items. 2 Pairs of Jeans 2 Pairs of chinos 7 XXL Shirts 1 Long Sleeve 2 Sweats 1 Pair of Shoes 1 Pair of Sandals 1 Light Sweater 6 pair of socks 6 pairs of underwear 3 Undershirts 1 Baseball Hat 2 Shorts 1 Light Rain Jacket Peak Design Small Wash Pouch 6 100ml bottles Cellphone charger Cellphone battery pack A small Book Hope this review helps. Happy travels!

Simply the best bag

After 3 years of use in all conditions in the four corners of the world, I can say... this is a perfect bag. Tested by the Indonesian rain, covered by snow on the Swiss peaks, splashed in the middle of the Andaman Sea in Thailand, deposited in the burning sand of Egypt, whipped by the winds of Spain, exposed for hours to the sun of Tazmania. This bag is all-proof, it is the perfect travel companion for small and large journeys. With its adjustable size it allows you to go from one size to another in a fraction of a second. You can put all your equipement of photo for a perfect security. It is an integral part of each of my trips as much for its practicality as for its quality. Ingenious and really well thought out I recommend without hesitation to anyone who wants to invest in a quality bag for many year.

Buy only if you can accept poor quality products.

Purchased in 2022, used the bag approximately once or twice a year when I go on long trips. 1. One zip handle tore. 2. Silicon mesh pocket flaked very badly 3. Material covering/protecting the zip broke I do not handle my bag roughly and when I travel I use this bag to supplement my large full size luggages. Read raving reviews about the bag and how some used it for years before I purchased it. The breakdown of materials started occurring less than 2 years during my once or twice yearly long trips. Note: tried to attach photos to this review however unable to do so.

Better than expected! (and looks amazing)

I bought this backpack mostly for traveling. However I have used it also for ski-touring and hiking as I haven't took any different backpack for vacation. After few hours I would say all features are useful. Great thing it that it keeps its shape and always looks good. Some reviews says it is heavy. It is, but it comes with all features and ways of opening it. I have used all four sides for access, what is perfect to find exactly what you need. Also it is really comfortable, even more than other outdoor backpacks I have. After 5 hours I haven't feel any discomfort.
