Fantastic 3rd Hand
I’ve had my hollow block for 2+ years of frequent use. While I’m a fan of using accessory cord for my 3rd hand when rappelling or securing rope during directional changes, the hollowblock serves as a fantastic alternative. It doesn’t get hot when passing rope, it has been very degradation resistant, and has held up super well with consistent use. Only draw back is that it’s an awkward length for some applications like a Bachman or Klemheist, but tight Prussik and Autoblock applications work well with the 13.5” loop. Stay safe out there, y’all
Perfect! I bought two of them
Accessory cord works fine as auto block back up below an elevated rappel device, but not ascending back up, at least in my experience This hollow block is nice to have around in a self rescue, ascend back up the rope scenario. It's much easier to break and move a friction knot up a rope, especially dynamic rope.
Hollow block
This works great but I'm not sure I wouldn't just use accessory cord and a double fisherman's...either way it does it's job and it's a good product.
Worth the price
This peice of gear is way more essential than I even realized. I have used a small peice of cordalette for years as an autoblock while rappelling and thought I didn't need this. Turns out not only does it run smoother whioe rapelling, but it is also much better for grabbing the rope while ascending. I think if you are going bare bones then yes, you don't "need" this, but if you can afford the expense I think this peice is well worth the price. Wish I had bought it sooner honestly. If you climb a lot you will appreciate the difference.
Essential Piece of Gear
The Hollowblock is an essential piece of my climbing gear. It is so much easier to use and more durable than a tied piece of cord. I carry this on my harness even when sport climbing. It you know how, you can utilize this in ascending, rescues, and probably most importantly, as a third hand back up when rappelling or lowering someone on an ATC guide or other tube device.
Works well, cost a bunch
For a prussik loop, this is a very expensive alternative to 3' of cord. It is nice though, and although I'm sure you're not supposed to, this has enough grip with 3 wraps to work with smaller rope. That's nice for me, because I'm mainly using this for the progress capture component of a kayak/canoe pin kit. A lot of times, someone will already have a rope hooked to the pinned boat, so it's nice to just add your pulley, prussik, and whatever to make it progress capture, 3:1, or whatever you're going to do. Many people carry 1/4" ropes, which are plenty strong enough, but normal 6.5 mm cords will just slide down. 13.5" loops are also good a good length on the progress capture end so that you don't loose everything you gained pulling if you use a standard carabiner/2" pulley.
Not so great for prusiking
I know this device is probably intended for rappel backup (auto block) and is probably great for that. But if your intent is to use this for ascending a rope via a prusik or klemheist knot, I find a 6mm round cord works better; it's much easier to slide and a lot less expensive.
The new gold standard
Ideal for backing up a rappel. Perfect legnth and grip, and it has no knots to worry about in with your carabiner or belay loop.
friction hitches make a safer approach
High heat resistance makes this great for friction hitches on my new Maxim 7 mm static line. I use the static line and this hollow block for a friction hitch When approaching Ledges in order to build anchors safely when top roping.
HollowBlock For Backing up an ATC
The HollowBlock is my standard go to device for backing up my extended ATC on a rappel
