Good size, decent material, not worth the price
I got this pillow when REI had a 25% sale going. That brought it down to a price comparable to other high end pillows like it. I’ve used it for over a year now on dozens of camping trips so I have a good sample size. Pros: it’s large which is nice, and the material feels pretty good for an inflatable. At 6oz it packs down great for the size! Cons: though the material is good, it’s not the most comfortable sleep. I like a softer touch, and this pillow has no cushioning and is too firm for me. The price is also crazy. I’ve had much better pillows at a $40 price point. They were maybe smaller, but much more comfortable. I’d save a buck and get the thermarest compressible pillow.
So good I can't stop using it
I'm a side sleeper and use a thick pillow at home. This is the only pillow I've tried that hasn't made my neck ache at all. It's nice and thick, and the removable pillowcase protects the inflatable insert nicely, as well as gives a comfortable feel. My only complaint is that it's a little heavy at 7 oz. (3 something without the pillowcase). That said, I just can't stop bringing it on my backpacking trips. I have a cheap thick $14 pillow off of Amazon that would do in a pinch, but I just don't sleep as well on it. I also tried the Trekology pillow, and that had me wake up with neck pain multiple times.
Surprisingly Plush Inflatable Pillow
I have now collected an assortment of camping pillows from ultralight inflatable to down filled, this one kinda merges the two. It’s plush cover provides a a comfortable contact material while the inflatable bladder allows for adjustable firmness and adequate packability. It doesn’t pack as well as an ultralight inflatable pillow but certainly packs better than a down or synthetic filled pillow. The only “con” that led to me dropping a star is the way they have you bleed the air out. To inflate, it has a one way blow valve that allows you to fully inflate the pillow in just a few breaths however to deflate they have you stick a plastic rod, attached to the valve by an elastic cord, into the rubber valve to allow air to escape... Sea-to-Summit does this much better by having their double valve system that allows you to close to valve to inflate and open to drain. I think this system will eventually damage the valve and will be the weak point of the item. At the end of the day this pillow is very comfortable and I am looking forward to rotating this into my kit!
Searching for the right one!
I have been on the market for a camp pillow throughout the entire fall season. Have tried a few with no success. The Exped Mega pillow is a good product with some things that I did not like. The Good...Light, big and comfortable. It is easy to inflate and also packed back into it's bag very easily. It was almost the one...The Bad...there is a little pin that is used to let out the air from the inflation hole. This did not make sense to me and I and just used my finger to let out the air. In the end, the green air valve which let the the air out was lost into the pillow. Other issue was that the air volume was hard to get right. Too much air and it was pretty hard, not enough air and it was like a waterbed. Overall I exchanged for the Exped Down Pillow which has more insulation.
So comfortable
This is the most comfortable backpacking pillow I’ve ever tried. I had sampled about 5 in store and as soon as my head hit this pillow, I knew I had to have it. I initially purchased this for car camping, but it’s so great that it is completely worth adding the weight to my ultralight backpacking kit.
A Side Sleeper's Dream
I bought this as a luxury backpacking and bikepacking item. I had been using my rain jacket and whatever else I could fit in a stuff sack and I always woke up with a stiff neck. This pillow has changed my life. I wake up refreshed. I've been using it at home lately because it's the perfect thickness for me as a side sleeper. No regrets or complaints about this one. It packs small and it weighs little.
Okay for camping, PERFECT for flying.
imo I'd rather bring my nice pillow from home to go camping, as the mega pillow - while nice - is still just a camping pillow. However this pillow is AWESOME for flights. Fill it up only about halfway as it will expand more during the flight due to air pressure, but I use it to help with my back. My sister and I also put it in the space between our seats with it sitting on top of the armrest, and if we both put our heads against it, it made for an absolutely awesome soft wall to sleep against. I've never been able to sleep on a plane for very long till we tried this out. I unfortunately lost the bag it came with, but any 1L fold-top dry bag would probably work with it. You need to have the exped air pump with you, which will take up space in your carryon but at least it can be squashed down.
Earned its place in my pack
The Exped Mega Pillow is a good balance between comfort and weight, but it's pricey. It's easy to inflate and to adjust firmness. The height of the pillow feels the most comfortable of all the inflatable pillows I have tried, and I've tried most of the ones on the market in my search. It offers "home pillow"-like support to my head when sleeping on my side and comfortable when sleeping on my back. The covering is as soft as your favorite t-shirt against your face and doesn't get clammy feeling on warmer nights or feel cold on very brisk nights. I haven't used the pillow yet when temps dipped below freezing. It's held pressure well with no leaks from the valve. It deflates and packs away quickly by just rolling it and then folding the roll in half. I value both lightweight and comfort in my sleep system so it's easy to carry during the day and offers maximum recovery overnight. Because of the cost, I would have rated the Exped Mega Pillow at 4.5 stars if that was a choice, but the comfort truly is outstanding so I rounded the rating back up. Try to pick one of these up during a good sale for an amazing value.
It just works!
This thing is a pure luxury for backpacking/camping. While it doesn't pack down quite as small as something like an aeros, it's well worth it. Inflation system is a breeze, 20 seconds and you're on your way to sweet dreams. It's not gonna (generally) fit in a bag hood, but the lashing loops make securing it to a sleeping pad easy. It's a little crinkly, but not noticeable and great for side-sleepers and those who need that extra neck support with soft material that makes use enjoyable.
Awesome pillow, thanks Exped
I've had this pillow for a few weeks and so far, so good. Clearly high quality. The one way valve makes inflation super easy, and also allows fine tuning the level of inflation. I took a nap on the beach and was very glad to have it. Then, let out a bit of air and used it for lumbar support in my low beach chair. Will probably buy a few more for the family.
