Sizing Notes
Measurements are stated in inches unless otherwise indicated. Size chart values represent body measurements, not garment measurements.
SHORT: Some pants are available in short sizes, which generally means an inseam that is 2.5 inches shorter than regular sizes.
TALL: Some pants, shirts, jackets and parkas are available in tall sizes, which generally means an inseam that is 3 inches longer and a rise that is 1 inch longer, a shirt or jacket body that is 2 inches longer, a parka body that is 2.5 inches longer and sleeves that are 2.5 inches longer than regular sizes.
Capri or cropped pants have an intentionally shorter inseam—reference the technical specs instead of this chart.
Inseam is measured to the floor.

Not durable, not meant for outdoor use.
I purchased two pairs of these pants within the last year, and I have developed a good idea of the capability of these pants. I got the 32×32's and they fit me well, regular fit. Once broken in they are actually very comfortable. My only issue is the durability.... for the price I honestly expected more. From my initial inspection and feel of them, I felt that these pants were quality and would last. Unfortunately it seems I may have over estimated these. Over the past year they have failed me in quite a few ways. Holes developing from light to medium use, the pocket seams ripping very easily, the pocket material rips just by regular use, belt loops ripping out of the pant material, and stitching falling out in multiple places, however I think increasing the size of the pockets it could cut down on wear as they do feel pretty small compared to other pants. Im not hard on these pants at all, no hiking or camping use, just day to day stuff. First problems for me developed after maybe 3-4 months. Most things are double stitched, but the thread material seems to deteriorate with just mild use. Im disappointed with these as I do like REI, their products, and their message. Unfortunately I think they overpriced these pretty significantly. These pants in no way would I trust in any hard use scenario, they will simply fall apart. Hopefully REI makes some changes with these. Being an outdoor brand I personally feel they should be able to be used in an outdoor setting, but as they currently are I don't feel they are worth the money. Disappointed, but hopeful that REI will improve the design.
Pockets fall apart
These are my favorite pants, I have 4 pairs that I’ve worn exclusively at work as a technician for the last year, but the durability is lacking. The pockets tear and fall apart in a few months. The joint in the upper corners of the back pockets and the crotch start to come apart. The rest of the pants still look great, the main canvas material is very durable and wears in well. Pen pocket location is super handy! Rei please make these pants with stronger pocket material and add a bit more stitching to the back pockets so they can last a lot longer, thanks!
Perfect work pants - why are these discontinued???
Why are these discontinued??? by and far, the best work pants I've owned. they took no time to break in and have great durability. I wear them every other day and they've held up great for over a year of daily use as well as using them hiking and climbing. They offer a great value compared to other more well known trendy work pant brands. Im 5'7" at 140lbs and the 30x32 fit me perfectly. not too loose, not too tight. the cotton is soft, hearty and offers the perfect amount of stretch. In the last month I've purchased two other brands of work pants and they just aren't as good as these REI Trailsmith pants. PLEASE BRING THESE BACK INTO THE RETAIL MARKET!!!.
Great idea with some design flaws
I like these a lot but there are a couple problems with the design. The front pockets are shallow and too far forward. If you try to squat or sit with a phone or wallet in your front pocket it’s really uncomfortable. The front belt loops are also very close together and asymmetrical which makes using a belt with a buckle awkward. Finally, the black is not black, it’s grey (see photos next to black sock and heather grey shirt). Otherwise, these are great. They look and feel well made, the utility pockets make sense (I like the pen holder on the left leg), and they’re comfortable as long as you’re not trying to sit down with stuff in your front pockets.
In summary of talking points of trail smith pants
This review is after about three years of daily wear- 4/5 times a week, doing everything from dating to falling off of bicycles to welding. Trailsmith pants seem to be cut more like casual trousers and less like dungarees, (think of like 501's) they fit for my refrigerator build is pretty spot on. The double fronts are great and the little details like the Pencil pocket and the double rear pocket on the driver side are perfect and I seem to use them all the time. The fabric is a groovy blend of cotton/poly and lycra- at first I wasn't sold, but after stepping on to the tailgate for the first time, I'm a believer and I don't think there's any going back. I will say that it seems to have a life span and has begun to tare along the bias in the thin spots (also this is after 3 years of everyday wear). My wallet hasn't punched through the back pocket like it does on other pants, there's a piece of fabric on the inside of the back pocket that acts like a liner, that's pretty rad. The bottom hems are also as fresh as the day they were made, no fade, no wear, no nothing *Also somewhat acid resistant. The stitching is pretty hit and miss, on the outseam pockets those stitches lasted about a year before they litteraly just fell out, but due to the construction techniques that doesn't seem to be an issue. Mirroring another review the pocket bag tore out at about year two. The belt loops hold up great considering I keep my keys on a hook. There is only one belt loop in the very back so if you wear a leatherman it tends to slide around. (TL;DR) Over all I'm impressed with these pants and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone. If you're looking for a bomb proof pair of pants- look no further. Good on ya REI
Not "rugged" at all
They fit well and they look good. Thats unfortunately where the pros end. I used these during the summer months guiding in the sierras and would wear them intermittently, cycling between 3 other pants. In the span of 3 months i started developing a hole in the butt area, the pocket also developed a hole big enough that stuff would start falling through it and into my pant leg, becoming almost unusable. I bought another pair and after a month the color faded drastically (see photo below). I have to say, i had high hopes for the pants but im dissappointed with the quality considering the cost. I would recommend them as a casual pant but NOT as a work pant/ hiking pant. (Since that photo of the hole was taken 2 weeks ago, another hole developed on the other side of the seam) For the cost i would have expected them to last longer than 3 months :(
Trailsmith Pants are a Hole-In-One
I bought Trailsmith Pants in 2020. I like them for several reasons. These pants fit well as there are many available sizes to suit your dimensions. Very comfortable cotton without stretch fabric. Clothes with stretch fabric use some form of polyester that doesn't breathe as well as natural fibers. There is a deficiency in the front pockets material and how the pockets are sewn into the pants. Within a year, I've worn a hole in the pockets, which I noticed when I lost coins. I stitched in a patch which worked for a while. Now there are new holes, so I know to not keep valuables in the front pockets. The pockets are also separating at the top seam, making them more useless. If I was a prospector, I would have lost my gold nuggets. I'm surprised by how soon and easily the pockets have worn through. If REI reads this, they should consider redesigning the pockets to last as long as the pants themselves.
What's the haps?
Avid Trailsmith pant enjoyer signing in to join the good fight. Please don't retire these. This is hands down the best all around daily driver pant on the market. In the shop, on the land, in the yard, on the town, these pants are my first pick every time. I own multiple pairs of every color way but this fella gained a little in the waist and boy was I sad that I can't order these anymore. I'll keep sucking it in until y'all come to your senses and put these puppies back on the shelves because even tight they still knock the socks off every other pant I own. Also while you're at it, put the overalls back in rotation as well if you guys don't hate puppies.
Decent work pants
I like these pants pretty well. They remind me a lot of a pair of canvas Carhartts - not the heavy washed duck, but the lighter jeans-style fabric. They seem like they're going to be good to work in. I like the classic work pant look. The double front rules and I like the pocket configuration. They're a "relaxed fit" but that's relative to REI's usual slim fit models. I have fairly big thighs and in my usual size 32 they're pretty snug. Fortunately, because they have some stretch, they're not uncomfortable. I wish they had a little more rise, because if you have much of a butt at all, they're going to gap a bit at the back. I have two complaints, both related to mobility. First, these are sold as an active pant, but the heavy cotton-blend fabric isn't ideal for something like hiking or bouldering. Unless you're pretty thin, you may want to size up if you want full freedom of movement. Second, the tag on the pants says they have a gusseted crotch. They do not. They really should. I think the lack of a gusset wouldn't bother me so much if the tag weren't lying about the presence of one mere inches away from where one isn't, but now I can't help thinking about how much nicer these would feel if they were gusseted, and about how they will almost certainly eventually fail in the crotch as so many cotton pants do. My guess is it was intended to be a feature but got cut as a cost-saving measure, which is just disappointing. I'd recommend these as work pants all else being equal, although I'm not sure they measure up in terms of value compared to similar products.
PLEASE BRING THEM BACK
Miss these pants dearly....a staple of my wardrobe.
