I bought these in Black as the one pair of shoes for everything, especially when traveling around Southern Africa and Europe- , moderately challenging/rocky hiking, all day walking, some driving, and nicer restaurants. The good news is they’re grippy, supportive, and inconspicuous (in black). The bad news is they seem to run narrower in larger sizes, so have comically long laces, and are moderately ugly /funny-looking/ ill shapen in large sizes. But boy are they grippy (bordering on too grippy) even on slippery/wet rocks and uneven wet surfaces etc. and offer very good rock protection. Fit is a bit narrow as Asolo often is.
It's a sneaker with a Vibram sole. I want to feel the ground under my feet, but I also want my hiking shoes to last more than a season or two. I liked the rubber guard over the toe and heel and thought the metal grommeted eyelets would probably help them last a little longer than my previous Merrells. Good size toe box. Didn't test the waterproofing -- not sure I'm going to keep them. I'm still deciding between this and the Oboz Tamarack Low (which seem more durable overall, but also much heavier and stiffer). Note: the weight listed on the REI website is about twice my measured weight for size 10 - mine weigh about 1.6 lbs for the pair.
So, I almost never review anything, but I really like these shoes. I bought them for a bike tour that was cancelled due to hurricane, Covid, etc., but I've now worn them quite a bit, including walking around 50 miles in a week in a European city. Right out of the box they were very comfortable and required minimal break in and they show minimal wear after around 150 miles of walking and light hiking. My only tiny complaint is I don't know why they are supplied with laces that are too long. I have to triple tie the laces to keep them off the ground. Obviously a tiny thing, but odd. Great shoes overall!
I have grown pretty tired of trail shoes that fall apart in a few months, so I thought I would give these a try as I have had very good luck with Asolo mountaineering boots. These shoes are a bit heavier than some of the competition, but feel like they will last and are well-constructed. The soles have great traction in both wet and dry conditions. The first hike I took with these was in light snow with frozen ground and they did not disappoint in the least. Two minor complaints: the ankle collar is quite stiff (but hopefully will break in a bit) and the heel loops are utterly worthless (too small for me to even put my pinkie finger in to pull on the shoes). Beyond that, these are great shoes.
Got these shoes for easy in town trail hiking. Used them today on 4 mile trail hike and rock jumping along a creek bed for about a mile. Amazing grip and the gore Tex worked perfectly in a shallow crossing. These seem to run narrow which is perfect for me, definitely recommend! I normally wear a 9.5 in shoes, 10 in running (Nike / Hoka). I went with the 9 and they fit perfect. I like narrow and fitted as a reference.
Bought these shoes to replace a pari of OBOZ that I loved but on my second pair the soles wore out in less than six months. I saw these GV Hiking shoes and liked the fact they had Vibram soles. I also liked the design and the blue suede. When they arrived they were immediately comfortable, but my feet slid about in my first few days of wearing them. After about 6-8 miles they loosened up a bit and they conform to my feet wonderfully. They snug up where they need to and after the dog and my daily 4 mile walk I hesitate to take them off. I've put near 60-70 miles on them and I can see no wear on the soles. I'm seriously considering buying another pair so I have a back-up pair when and if these wear out, which I don't think will be very soon.
I have used Asolo Fugitive GTX hike boots for many years to hike in the rocky mountains. They are a great product as they are comfortable right out of the box and very tough. Unfortunately these Space GV shoes disappoint in these regards. I knew they were light duty when I ordered them but was not expecting them to be so uncomfortable very light duty. I had to buy expensive sole inserts to make them more comfortable and to add support to the thin and super flexible soles. I also had to change out the crazy long laces for shorter ones to fit the shoe. Some mentioned the laces were probably left over boot laces. I gave them 3 stars as I like them for what they are but wont use them on any hike over rough terrain and rocks. People notice them though!
These replaced an older pair of Asolo's I had for 5 years and they are awesome just like my first pair! The look and feel of the shoes are first-rate and the removeable inserts allows me to slip a 5mm shim in one shoe to make up for my difference in leg length (something most of have to some degree). The soles and tread pattern are tough but still compliant to make walking in them on the sidewalk or road very comfortable.
Nice footbed - plenty flexible but also firm enough to smooth out roots, rocks and edges. The heel looked wide but somehow did not walk that way. The long lacing system really helps place the foot in the shoe so you dont slide forward on the descent.
I bought these when I realized I didn't have hiking shoes with me for climbing Mt. Washington in the rain. They didn't need any break in, fit great and don't slip at all on rocks. I often wear them on light snow days as well.
