No plastic after taste!! Great for dayhikes

Got this for a camping/hiking weekend trip to Big Sur. First thing to note it did not fit 3 L.. was transferring 3L of water from bottled water and it only fit a 2L equivalent. The water was great the whole time though and did not taste at all like plastic (so this is definitely a 4 star purchase and would be recommending this!)

Prone to leakage, no tube replacement kits!
Wet backpack contents

We bought four of these for a family trip, two of them failed via leakage, similar to experience of other reviewers. One sprung a leak at the junction between the bag and tube, the other failed by the quick connect pulling out of the short tube attaching it to the bag. REI doesn't stock replacement tube hardware, nor does Platypus on their website. C'mon guys - how hard is it to get hard plastic quick attachments that stay in their tubes, and don't rip me off by trying to sell me a whole new tube with attachments when all I need is the connectors or the mouthpiece. The tubing will itself will likely never fail, so let's not cause more plastic in landfills by forcing customers to buy everything just to fix one part.

High hopes, disappointing quality

Got this for my honeymoon 1.5 years ago, it was great for a few trips and now is only fit to use around the house (I keep my mine hanging by the handle near my desk so I don't hae to constantly refill a water bottle while WFH). The inner walls completely separated from each other, meaning there's no inner support for the bag. The bite valve is about to be replaced a *second* time from wear out and the handle on the valve started breaking today, which led me to look for replacements and leave this review. I wanted to like this bag. When it was in good shape, it fit nicely in my bag and it holds a lot of water and has good flow, but at this point I'm not sure I'd buy it again.

Perfect. Except for the leak...

Functionally this bladder is excellent and better designed than the previous generation. I used this on an 14 day backpacking trip and it was perfect for my needs. The relocation of the quick disconnect is fantastic for getting the bladder in an out of your backpack. Unfortunately it hasn't stood the test of time. The quick disconnect comes out of the tube that's connected to the bladder with almost no effort. So if I pull on the mouth piece too hard it floods all the water into my backpack. In all the bladder only lasted 16-20 days of use. That's the reason for the 1 star - it's basically disposable at that point.

Hoping it’s just a fluke

I’ve used this three times since purchase in order to get comfortable with the weight and everything prior to a large road trip. Unfortunately, on my first hike of the trip I ended up with a wet butt after my first few sips. Figured it may have been condensation. Then I put my pack down at a break point and half my water leaked out. Discovered this was from the quick connect that had a break right up the seam. Going to try to find an REI to stop off at en route to the next destination. Overall, seems like a great product for my Gregory 35 pack and worked as expected, minus the inopportune crack.

Has some flaws, but still works reasonably well

I used this for a 600 mile PCT section hike last hear and for some overnights this year. I didn't have any of the leaking issues others have reported, nor cracks in the fittings or having the quick-disconnect pop apart. With reasonable care and proper use I don't think those things should be a common problem unless you get a bad unit. However, the inner baffle that holds the two sides of the reservoir together has ripped in half recently which might indicate that it is about the fail. See the picture. The quick disconnect is really handy for long hikes. I use a Sawyer filter to pump water directly into the reservoir using an adapter that mates into the quick disconnect. I don't have to unpack or even remove the reservoir from the pack. I recommend you use this in conjunction with a hydration sleeve to protect it from abrasion from pack contents.

Disastrous Leaking

It worked fine for my first backpacking trip of 10 days, but on the second trip which was 11 days long, it started leaking on the 5th day! My whole back and the inside of the pack pack were wet and I had water dripping down my legs into my shoes. I thought it wasn't sealed right so i pulled it out and resealed it mid-trail and still no luck. This was a potentially dangerous equipment fail seeing as how i was hiking in the cold and unpredictable weather of Patagonia, and i got wet without having my rain gear on. Also the inside of my pack, down sweater and sleeping bag got wet too. It was very stressful not having my backup plan for the cold weather (i.e. dry clothing and sleeping bag) available to me. the seal was leaking all around the connector valve between the bladder and the hose, and it was leaking large amounts of water. In the picture you can see I ended up attaching the bladder to the outside of my pack and wrapping it in plastic bags to contain the leaking water and carrying it in a smaller backpack strapped on top of the big backpack. But the hose mouthpiece barely reached my mouth and i had to constantly readjust the bladder and hose. Once again REI is amazing and they were very gracious and took it back no questions asked. Buy something else, Platypus bladders are not worth the headache or the danger!

good reservoir

I used this while hiking Mt. Kilimanjaro. The 3 L size was exactly what I needed to stay hydrated. It was easy to get water into it. I loved that the mouthpiece disconnected from the main reservoir - this made it easier for the porters who were filling them up. In addition, it's fairly easy to wash without buying some kit. This reservoir will continue to get used in upcoming hiking trips. I did purchase the insulator kit to help protect my water from freezing on summit night (which worked until about an hour prior to summit). The insulator kit helped protect the mouthpiece and kept it clean - which I would recommend, as the reservoir has no mouthpiece protector.

Well made and hardy

Used this bladder for the past week non-stop just hung up next to my bed at home(not the intended use I know). Used this on a few bike rides and performed well, good flow rate, no leaks. I took a spill and did fell over the front of my bike, with the bladder in my backpack. No bursts or anything! There’s some marks on the tube where it rubbed on the road, but no leaks, didn’t even make much of a scuff (wish I could say the same about my shoulder). Looking forward to using this hiking this summer. The opening on top is large and fills SUPER easy with the sink.

Easier to clean/dry than CamelBak

I’ve always had CamelBak water bladders. Got this one to drop in my new REI Flash 45, and will never turn back from Platypus. Just the cleaning....wow....having that large opening means you can clean it so much easier, and dry it in minutes without having to let it air dry for a day. Love this thing so far.
