Excellent for multi-use bike.
In typical Shimano fashion, these are excellent pedals. They are well designed and very well made. The bearings are smooth as butter. The spikes on the flat pedal side grip like alligator jaws, ensuring your foot stays put. Granted the platform is much smaller than flat-pedals, but I think for the targeted use, these will be very effective. The SPD side is a typical Shimano SPD and works just as well as my trail XT pedals. I got these primarily for my indoor trainer because I'm usually clipped in, but for some workouts I like to be able to jump on and off with my training sneakers. But these would also be great on a gravel or commuter bike where you're likely to be wearing different shoes. It's easy to find the side you want and clip in or run flat pedal side. And those bearings are so nice and smooth. The only penalty is weight, but it's not significant. I'm really glad Shimano has these as an option. Great purchase.
Great for big rides and commutes/errands
This is my second set of these pedals. Loved the first ones so much that I added them to my other bike too. Perfect for a bike you want to use for both clipped in kinda rides and commutes/errands where you want to wear street shoes. Very easy to adjust.
Back on a bike for the first time in 20+ years
Only my first afternoon with my new pedals, and I couldn’t be happier! Like so many, I wanted a hybrid to have the flexibility to just jump on and hit the neighborhood with our daughter, and the PD-EH500 fits the bill perfectly. So far, mine rest in a toe down configuration, and as an old road bike rider, it was very easy to get used to getting my feet on the flats. Getting clipped feels just as natural. I am really looking forward to years of use with these pedals! And of course, REI, and the bike shop, were amazing as always. Rode right over, they popped them on, and out the door I went. Thank you!

So I am new to clip-in/clipcless pedals. I have a nice gravel bike that I road ride most of the time and I want to get into gravel racing and thought these pedals seemed like a good in between as I probably won't always want to be clipped. Gotta say once I got the hang of getting my shoe clipped in (only took a few minutes) and taking some laps around the lawn, it's already almost second nature and I don't need to look at my feet everytime :) Some people have complained about the clip being too loose, but I appreciate this as a newbie as I've been able to yank my foot out and catch myself before I tip over and hit the ground when I forget I'm clipped!
Here's the straight dope on these pedals.
These pedals are perfect for their intended use. These are not "multipurpose" pedals. They are way too narrow to be comfortable with regular outdoorsy type shoes. You will hate riding on these with anything but cycling (MTB preferred) shoes. I used the Shimano XC3's and have these pedals on my Gravel Bike, which I ride a lot of local roads and trails with sand, soft pack, hard pack, old pavement, new pavement, etc. The thing that is nice about these, is if you get into a bind you can dismount and still pedal on the flat side until you make it out of the suck, then when the coast is clear mount again.
Combination pedals
I was looking for a dual sided pedal for short trips around the way and some commuting without having to put on clipless shoes. these fit the bill nicely, flat sided studs have enough bite to give traction even when wet, enough surface area for my size 9.5 feet to mash away. The clipless side,when dialed in to ones preferences, lock in pretty snug, seem to be built pretty tough as well as they just survived a fairly nasty over the bar spill at speed which sent me sliding and the bike flipping about. used my dividend for the year plus a sale and paid less than 10$. super stoked.
Not safe!
This road pedal LOOKS ideal for clipping in regular pedaling. Not at all, sadly. The flat side contact has ZERO GRIP, and if your shoe soles are slightly wet they can easily SLIP off the pedal!! The clip side as well is TOO LOOSE for my road shoe cleats. When pedaling sometimes they often pop off. I've never had this problem. It could possibly be my cleats need replacing, but the clip itself is far too 'round' from visual inspection and has a generic manufacture feel. I want to but cannot recommend this pedal.
Makes my bike more useful
I've had these about a year now and really like them. I actually put them on my Specialized road bike. They are not very Aero, but now when I want go to the store or the gym, I can just ride my bike in whatever shoes I already have on without having to get into a full cycling kit. The end result is that I ride my bike more, use my car less, have more fun and get more fitness. And when I am am in full cycling mode, they perform fine. I cant think of any reason to switch back to the speedplay pedals I was using before.
Cannot recommend these pedals - too loose
I've used other Shimano SPD pedals for a long time but cannot recommend these. I bought them to go on my new gravel bike a few months ago. But the interface between the shoe cleat and the pedal is way too loose when clipped in. My feet rock and float. I've tried everything to correct this - adjusted pedal release tension to the tightest, added cleat wedges to my shoes (creates a larger gap to better clear shoe sold lugs), and tried different shoes altogether. Still a loose when clipped in and bothersome to ride with. I have a mountain bike with Shimano M520 pedals also and there is a marked difference when riding with these same shoes. When you are clipped in, your feet don't rock or float.
Perfect pedal for the best of both worlds
I've only had these pedals for a little bit but I already know that this pedal is for the long term. I am not a terribly serious rider, I like to ride and really enjoy it for good workouts and touring around. I put these on my gravel bike so I can ride to a spot, get off the bike, run around, and bike home without having to bring two pairs of shoes. I also got these to clip in on days I just want to ride. The platform side is awesome, the cleat part allows me to push and pull in my stroke without my foot moving or even feeling close to falling off. The clip side is easy clip in and out. It's weighted perfectly where it doesn't flip if I take my foot off the pedal. I have experienced that flip on other pedals and very much no likey. This pedal is great for what I use it for.
