I've owned this jacket for a couple of years so it's time for a proper review. One thing to know before buying is that the fit is a bit on the small side so make sure you try it before. I really like the weight of this jacket, it's super light and pack small but I do have some issues with it. First, the threads are very easy to damage. You have to be very careful because they get easily caught in something, pulled and then break and then the separations between the rows of down are gone... The fabric itself is very light and you have to be careful, but I only have one hole so it's not that bad and basically any down jacket will experience some holes given the time. My other main issue is how the down will pack in certain spot and leave other parts completely empty of isolation. It happens mainly along the arms, near the elbow, the wrist and behind the shoulder. A slightly larger fit could potentially help with this, and putting it in the dryer with tennis balls helps to put the down back in place. One last thing, the labels on the fabrics will peel off after some time.
I am new to the mountain hardwear brand and the ghost whisperer jacket was my first purchase. I am very happy with my jacket thus far. The quality seems to be really good. I read some reviews on here about how the zippers / fabric are too fragile but I have not had any issues yet. The most impressive feature is how lightweight this jacket is! It weights almost nothing and it keeps you very warm. This jacket has served me well with the winter weather in San Francisco. I do not know how well it performs in colder areas but I am confident that this jacket can hold its own. My only gripe with this jacket is that the sleeves are a tiny bit too long.
Another excellent product from MH! I used this on my Maroon Bells Four Pass Loop backpacking trip. The jacket is comfortable, warm, VERY lightweight, it packs down very small, and in its own pocket. The temperatures were down in the low 20'sF in the mornings and at the mountain passes, the jacket had zero problems keeping me warm. The hood fits great and provides excellent protection. Protects well from the wind and rain. It is built rugged enough to withstand brush rubbing on the jacket as I walked into overgrown areas. I ordered one size larger so it would go over all of my layers. This is truly an excellent product!
I've had this product since Nov 2015 and it's my "go-to" jacket for just about everything. Fishing, hiking, camping, shovelling snow and walking the dog on a cool evening. I've even used it for temps below -20C and it functions well. I think it does have a few drawbacks however. The odd piece of down will escape through the stitching. The stitching itself around the cuff/wrist area is slowly coming undone and ripping. This is due to the zippers on this thing. Plan on keeping your front and pocket zippers shut most of the time or the stitching around the lower half of the arms will constantly snag on it and get pulled out, It's a bit frustrating and a design flaw in my opinion. Would I buy one again? If the product was revised so the stitching didn't snag on the zippers....yes in heartbeat. But not until then.
I normally do not write reviews, but this jacket warranted a review since I know others like myself rely on good reviews for products. I was worried at first about the 7D x 10D fabric on the outside not holding up to normal wear, but it has held up to some long dog's nails scratching and multiple times stuffing into the pocket. My only concern with it at the moment is that feathers seem to be coming out of most of the seams; just one or two feathers in random places but hard to tell if this will continue and eventually end up losing loft. Overall I love the jacket. I've been using it as my only layer in spring, but am excited to bring in on my backcountry trips this summer.
(This review was collected as part of a promotion.) Very very light and still quite hot, I find it extremely comfortable because it is ample and very light, I do not know better. This coat also serves as an insulating layer in winter in cold weather under another coat (thin down), so that even at -32C I'm not cold. In addition, by its very soft fabric, the fabric does not rub and does not cause discomfort when used as an insulating layer under another coat not very hot. In short, in my opinion, very comfortable and a great ally in cool or very cold weather. This coat is compact in its own pocket, which facilitates the transport because it will take only a small space in your bag pack. It's really a great product, but it's a little expensive.
I Needed and nice middle layer for Fall-Spring Steelhead Fishing. i was recently up in Olympic Peninsula, WA in the river all day in 30-35 degree weather, never needed outer layer, and never felt cold once. This is a great Jacket!! Going up to Northern BC in the Fall and looking forward to putting it through the test then.
Purchased this coat a mere 3 weeks ago and used it as a layer underneath sallopettes, with other layers overtop. No mountaineering, nothing dragged against it, no abrasions or abuse. Had my keys in one of the pockets for a total of 20 minutes max over the course of two days. There is now a hole in the left side, with down coming out. Didn’t have anything on my lap, no sit ups, nothing being crushed. On the right side, the stitching is now coming apart. This jacket has been babied and still it’s workmanship is extremely poor. I decided to give Mountain Hard Ware a go after being dissatisfied with Arcteryx’ lack of performance on some of their jackets. Looks like I’m back to the drawing board again...
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought this jacket for a hiking trip around Europe. Knew I was going to visit the Alps so I wanted to have a layer that would keep me warm. I purchased both the size L and size M, but decided to return the size M because it was too tight under the arm pits; I'm 6'0", 165 - 170 lbs, with an athletic build. I felt warm in this jacket at all the temperatures I wore it at (down to 30F). It fits great and is super lightweight and well built. Love that it stuffs into its own pocket for easy storage in a backpack. A little worried about the thin material, but so far no holes despite regular use. The moisture repellent down (DownTek) was a big consideration for me as I knew I would be seeing some wet conditions.
I’d been researching gear for an upcoming 77 mile hike and knew I needed a down puffy. I finally decided to splurge and get the Ghost Whisperer. It has quickly moved from a specialized hiking jacket to a constant companion during second winter! I love that it’s warm enough for the mornings but compacts small enough to store in my center console of my van when I don’t need it anymore. It’s an athletic fit but not so trim that it looks strange with normal clothes. And it takes up almost no space in my hiking pack! I can’t wait to put it to good use during my hike.
