GUPPYFRIEND Washing Bag
When you wash your synthetic clothes, plastic fibers in the wastewater could end up in the bellies of ocean creatures. Filter and dispose of them properly with the GUPPYFRIEND washing bag.

- Made from untreated, recyclable Polyamide fabric, the bag filters out microfibers released from clothing and gear during washing so they won't end up in wastewater
- Easy to use: Fill half-full with synthetic clothing, zip closed, wash as usual; remove clothes to hang dry and remove released microfibers from the hems inside the washing bag
- Designed for use with synthetic materials (polyester, acrylic, nylon and so on), this can also be used as a wash bag for natural-fiber clothing
- Measures 29.1 x 19.7 in., large enough to wash several items at once

Good product to help control microfiber damage
I bought this a while back at the Patagonia store when you could only get it at their store locations. I had been waiting for this to come out because I had a fleece jacket that was releasing fibers everywhere even just sitting in the car the seatbelt would be covered in them. Because of that I was very worried about washing it. Now at our home we only wash fleece items in these to try and catch all the fibers. It's great for keeping things separate and has held up well. It would be great if they released other sizes as well as an easier way to get the fibers out. I try to do it while they are still wet since it's easier to get them.
Works great but very low quality
I like knowing I’m keeping plastic fibres out of the ocean and I find my clothes are actually cleaner when I use these bags. However in the past couple of years I’ve gone through 6 of these bags because the cheap plastic zippers always break. It’s a shame that a company trying to save the environment went for cheap materials. I have tried repairing and modifying the bags but haven’t found a way to keep them out of the landfill.
Definitely collecting some micro waste in the wash
This product seems to be doing what it advertises: stoping synthetic clothing from shedding micro waste into water systems. I'm not sure how much my synthetic clothing normally sheds, but the bag is collecting little bits every wash. The downsides: - I've bought two bags, and one has a small hole in the corner where the zipper is. Not a huge deal, but hoped it would have lasted longer than 20 washes before it started to break down. - Not necessarily a negative, but picking out the synthetic fiber waste can be a bit of pain between washes, but that's the price of admission and trying to reduce our impact.
Not clear that it works
I used mine to wash workout clothes for 4 years and never saw any evidence of microplastics that they claim you will find in the bag. The bag also tore in half just now but the company says they only have a 1 year warranty. Won’t be using in the future
Worth the extra money to save our water quality
I have several old twin size fleece blankets that have worn thin over the years - and much of the missing material likely went out with the wash water, through our sewage treatment plant, and out into our waterways. Cringe. Now we know better and can do better. We have three of these bags, and use them to wash synthetic materials that are fuzzy inside and/or out. Quarter zips, socks, some technical tees - and those blankets. I wish these came in a larger size, as full size (and larger) blankets cannot fit. We've mostly stopped using those, however. Now if I could get my teenagers to use the Guppy bags when they do their laundry, I'd be really happy (I know, I should be happy that they do their own laundry at all!)
Zipper tab on both bags broke at the same time
These bags were initially easy to use but once the zipper pulls broke off, they became very difficult to close and open. Can these bags be recycled? ( how and where?). Bag could be improved by using a high quality zipper, and by offering recycling or repair
Great idea, but flawed product
I was very excited to use this product, but it has failed me multiple times now. I have had two GuppyFriend bags, and both zippers have broken in different ways. The older bag (purchased in 2021) had the pull on the metal zipper break within a year, which made it very difficult to open and close properly. I kept using it and eventually the bag itself just ripped open. The second bag purchased less than a year ago had a different zipper design which seemed to last longer, but the zipper track just ripped off of the fabric so that the bag no longer sealed. Luckily, this second incident was within REI return policy, so I returned it today and am going to try for one more bag. If that fails, I guess I'll just have to give up on trying to reduce my microplastic pollution this way. Aside from the quality issues, you do have to be careful how much you pack in there. I actually found it better to have two moderately filled bags in one wash to help with balancing. Unfortunately, I no longer have a second bag.
Everybody should have at least one
This is my second one. Unfortunately, much of my wardrobe is still made from polyester and other synthetics. Even with recycled polyester becoming a thing now, it still causes microplastics to shed. These bags are great for trapping those fibers before they can enter the water supply. They work best when they're about half full, so having two is great if you have a lot of clothes with synthetic fabrics.
If you use petroleum based insulation get one
If you use and wash petroleum based insulation, then you need one of these to protect the environment. I vacuum out the fibers and dispose in trash vs. flowing out past (liquid) sewage treatment to the rivers and oceans which is the problem with microfibers. Better yet I've converted all new purchases to merino and other natural insulators.
One more way to live greener
I bought a guppyfriend a little under a year ago, and haven’t looked back since. The bag itself is durable, and shows no signs of wear, even at the ends of the zipper. I am particularly impressed with that, as well as the strength of the material surrounding the zip opening. The designers of this bag obviously aimed for quality and hit their mark. I am petite, so the bag fits about half of my garments per small load. You can see the microfibers accumulate after the first half a dozen to dozen washes, which I find comforting (this is actually a solution) and discomforting (how many people have no idea washing their clothes is contributing to pollution in our oceans?). The only critique I have is I wish the bag was bigger so I could fit more clothes per load, and this use less energy and water. But one step at a time, yes? All in all, an affordable, easily implemented lifestyle change and solution to one of the many ways our everyday lives are slowly eroding the health of the planet. The fact that these are on backorder demonstrates their popularity. Purchase yours today and be part of the solution!
